Notes: Abstract Between 1 January 1980 and 28 July 1981, a series of large earthquakes with body-wave magnitudes around 7, took place along the western segment of the Alpide belt. The sequence started in the Azores and migrated eastward along the belt at a rate of about 4400 km/yr with consecutive large events in northern Algeria, southern Italy, southern Greece and Iran. Two different methods are employed to identify similar series and corresponding migration velocities during earlier time periods of this century. The data set used contains all earthquakes with body-wave magnitudes larger than 6.3 and covers the time interval 1901–81. The concept of linear migration is tested for eastward and/or westward propagation, considering high migration velocities from 1600 to 11 000 km/yr. Results obtained are not homogeneous with respect to the two opposite migration directions, west-east and east-west, and we interpret this as a net drift of earthquake activity from the west to the east. Our efforts here are concentrated on analysis of observational data and on estabilishing the uniqueness of migration patterns. Because of the complexity of the tectonic system in question, we did not attempt to establish a mechanism explaining the migration of the observed earthquake sequences.

Notes: The transformation and integration of acquired businesses is subject to tensions between implementing radical change to match the strategy and corporate culture of the acquirer, and promoting what is valuable in resources and cultural attributes in the acquired organization. Analysts’ disagreement arises from different conceptualizations of the nature of resources. We present an evolutionary perspective that demonstrates not only the merits of competitive selection, but of local adaptation of transferred resources and of stimulating the development of local ones.Evidence from 18 original case studies in Hungary and East Germany shows that a defensive focus on short-term efficiency, i.e. downsizing, may fail to realize the long-term potential of the organization. Acquirers supporting an evolutionary development of their new subsidiary by providing autonomy and complementary resources might well have to tolerate some slack in the short run, but may realize more of the potential contributions of the acquired assets in the long run.

Notes: One of the problems of a theory of integration consists in the difficulty to define ‘integration’ itself. The theory of international trade can hardly provide such a definition, for the problem of integration are related to the various fields of theory. The author defines integration as the merger of two or more national economies. In such an integrated economy some of the national public offices must be joint together in order to solve the problems of the whole integrated area. This is the reason why the author prefers an ‘institutional’ to a ‘functional’ solution. The way the economies are integrated depends on their structure. The present-day problem is the integration of ‘mixed’ economies of the western Europe type. The most important requirements of a total integration are: (1) giving up the internal border-lines, (2) centralization of the national policies and erecting a joint legal constitution, (3) assimiliation of the national economic structures. The examination of the political and economic consequences of integration shows that uniting several economies into one is possible without complete political union. The process of economic integration is autonomous and can be pushed forward isolatedly. But it is not possible as yet to give exact details about the economic effects of integration.

Notes: The capitalist and socialist societies of the twentieth century assigned firms different roles within their economic systems. Enterprises transforming from socialist to market economies thus face fundamental organizational restructuring. Many former state-owned firms in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe have failed at this task. These firms have pursued primarily defensive downsizing, rather than strategic restructuring, as a result of both internal and external constraints on restructuring strategies.Building on the organizational learning and resource-based theories, we analyse strategies available to management in privatized, former state-owned enterprises in transition economies to restructure their organization. Both internal forces promoting or inhibiting the restructuring process, and external constraints arising in the transition context are examined. A model and testable propositions are developed that explain post-privatization performance. Implications of our research point to the ways in which firms should manage and develop their resource base to transform to competitive enterprises.

Notes: Foreign investors entering emerging markets have to take strategic decisions on where and how to set up operations. These decisions have to accommodate institutional conditions that vary not only between countries, but also within the host economy. We offer a theoretical framework to analyse how institutions in an emerging economy influence entry strategy decisions. On this basis, we analyse the determinants of two key aspects of entry strategy: location and entry mode in Vietnam. We find that sub-national institutional variables have a significant influence on both dimensions. The availability of scarce resources affects the location of FDI and the likelihood of Greenfield entry. Institutional pressures arising from incumbent state-owned firms and the domestic market orientation of the investor lead to a preference for joint venture entry.

Notes: X-ray computed tomography (CT) and mercury porosimetry were combined to connect density gradients and the distribution of open porosity in a sintered compact. CT clearly showed that open porosity follows the initial distribution of low-density zones. Mercury porosimetry detected three distinct levels of porosity. Microstructural examination correlated the porosity level with the coordination of (i) two to three or (ii) multiple grains around pores. This combination of techniques provides a novel tool for the study of pore and density-gradient evolution during sintering.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In the South Portuguese Zone close associations of diorites, tonalites and trondhjemites occur north of the Pyrite Belt. The period of their emplacement is Pre-Carboniferous and not, as has generally been assumed, Variscanpostorogen. The trondhjemitic intrusive suite and the Lower Carboniferous spilite-keratophyre association are related through their comagmatic derivation. Both series share sodium dominance, low concentrations of large-ion lithophile elements, indicators of a water-rich original magma and a deficient scorification of the element potential, which was acummulated in the sulphide and manganese deposits of the Pyrite Belt through post-volcanic hydrothermal processes. The mineralogically and geochemically primitive composition of both plutomtes and vulcanites, their mode of eruption from acid to basic facies as well as their position in the orogenic process indicate that they represent products of a successively proceeding partial melting of subducting oceanic crust. The trondhjemitic intrusives are the initialites in the magmatic-orogenic development.
