    Notes: An ultrafine-particle plasma consisting of electrons, positive K+ ions, and large negative C−60 ions is produced by introducing "Buckminsterfullerene, C60'' particles into a low-temperature ((approximately-equal-to)0.2 eV) potassium plasma column confined by a strong axial magnetic field. With an increase in the C−60 fraction, the electron shielding decreases, yielding clear effects on plasma collective phenomena, which are demonstrated for low-frequency electrostatic plasma-wave propagations and instabilities. This plasma might be useful for producing new C60-based materials.

    Notes: Production of hydrocarbon radicals is controlled by using a whistler wave discharge in range of radio frequency in a low pressure region (∼0.1 Pa). Plasma density of 1010–1013 cm−3, electron temperature of 2–20 eV is obtained for the discharge of the admixture of Ar and small content of source gases (CH4, C2H2, CO). Spectroscopic measurement indicates that densities of CH and H radicals and the deposition rate of amorphous carbon:H film increase with electron density, electron temperature, and source gas pressure. The etching effect of H atoms influences on the deposition rate and a high deposition rate (90 μm/h for CO/Ar discharge) is obtained even in a low neutral pressure discharge.

    Notes: High density oxygen plasmas (ne=1010–1013 cm−3) are produced by a helicon wave discharge source with rf powers of 0.1–3 kW. Positive and negative ion species in the plasmas are measured by a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The intensity ratio of O+ to O+2 increases with the electron density ne and is almost proportional to it in the region of ne=1010–1012 cm−3. When the electron density increases up to 8×1012 cm−3, the ratio becomes about 4. In a high density plasma of 1.3×1013 cm−3 obtained by mixing Ar gas, about 83% of the positive oxygen ions becomes O+. By using pulse modulation of the rf power, O− ions are mainly observed with remarkable increase in the afterglow. The maximum density of O− is about 3×1011 cm−3 at 30 μs after turning off the rf power of 0.85 kW and the decay time of O− is about 60 μs. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The microhardness of films of fullerene-polyethylene composites prepared by gelation from semidilute solution, using ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (PE) (6×106), has been determined. The composite materials were characterized by optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The microhardness of the films is shown to increase notably with the concentration of fullerene particles within the films. In addition, a substantial hardening of the composites is obtained after annealing the materials at high temperatures (T a=130 °C) and long annealing times (t a=105s). The hardening of the composites with annealing temperature has been identified with the thickening of the PE crystalline lamellae. Comparison of X-ray scattering data and the microhardness values upon annealing leads to the conclusion of phase separation of C60 molecules from the polyethylene crystals within the material. The temperature dependence is discussed in terms of the independent contribution of the PE matrix of the C60 aggregates to the hardness value.

    Notes: Abstract Gorham syndrome (massive osteolysis) is a very rare tumour-like lesion characterized by progressive osteolysis. The diagnosis must be confirmed by the microscopic finding of intramedullary angioma-like vascular structures. We report a case of a 15-year-old boy with a pathological fracture in his left humerus. Imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, angiography and bone scintigraphy failed to disclose to tumorous lesion that filled a cavity in the left humerus. After observing the boy’s progress for 6 months, a temporary diagnosis of Gorham syndrome was made, and surgical treatment was chosen. After resection of the left humeral head and the proximal one-quarter of the humerus, thorough curettage was performed in the distal humerus and an intramedullary artificial humeral head fixed with adequate success. Pathological examination of the specimen revealed intramedullary haemangioma of the humerus.
