    Notes: Abstract Transmission electron microscopy is used to investigate the tin deposits formed when tin is thermally evaporated on to softened polystyrene substrates, the polystyrenes being softened by heating them to above their glass transition temperature. The structure of the deposit is dependent on the molecular weight of the polystyrene. For low molecular weights, islands of tin grown on the polystyrene surface rapidly “sink” to form a microstructure consisting of subsurface spheres of tin. As the molecular weight is increased the reduced rate at which islands can sink is reflected in the particle size distribution of the deposit.

    Notes: Abstract The post-yield behaviour of linear low-density and high-pressure polymerized low-density polyethylenes have been compared in tension and compression. Rubber elasticity theory has been used to describe the strain-hardening region of the stress-strain curves in terms of extension of amorphous regions and entanglement associated with crystalline regions. The resulting strain-hardening functions were used to predict the geometry of the neck profiles produced while deforming in tension. No relationship between strain hardening and environmental stress-crack resistance was found in that the two types of polyethylenes exhibited very different dependences.

    Notes: Small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to study the structure along a single craze that had broken down to form a crack along part of its length. This study was made possible by use of radiation from the synchrotron source CHESS which is sufficiently intense to permit examination of just a single craze. The total scattering from the craze was in excellent agreement with that expected from a knowledge of its dimensions and fibril volume fraction and width. This fact adds confidence to the interpretation of the scattering pattern of the craze as part diffraction, part reflection, and demonstrates that SAXS is a technique that may be used to measure craze volume within a sample. The craze was shown to grow in width by surface drawing with a constant structure, and then the fibrils broke to form a crack. The broken fibrils contracted and their diameters increased but they appeared to stay parallel with a constant fibril-axis radial distribution function.

    Notes: Recent work using small angle scattering techniques to study craze structure is reviewed. Three different radiations, electrons, X-rays, and neutrons were used to study four problems in the area. These were (1) the structure of crazes in thin films, (2) the structure of a single craze/crack in a bulk material, (3) the effect of organic environments, and (4), the effect of mechanical fatigue on craze structures. It is shown that the high intensity of a synchrotron source permits the examination of the process of growth and breakdown of a single craze in polystyrene and also the study in real time of the short- and long-term changes during fatigue of crazes. The H/D neutron contrast effects for neutrons were used to study environmental crazes with the environment still present.
