Notes: Abstract In most of the Indian cities drinking water is drawn from shallow aquifers with the help of hand pumps. These shallow aquifers get easily polluted. In the present work we have measured 20 trace elements using Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and 8 chemical parameters using standard chemical methods of drinking water drawn from Rajpura city. It was found that almost all water samples are highly polluted. We attribute this to unplaned disposal of industrial and domestic waste over a period of many decades.

Notes: Abstract Unlike previously reported Zn and Se levels were found to be the same in the hair of mentally retarded children and controls. Non-essential toxic Ag concentration was low whereas that of Hg, Au and Sc rather high in mentally retarded children.

Notes: Summary By comparing the natural activities in biosphere and building materials at Chandigarh and Tokyo, we found that at both these places, contamination due to nuclear bomb explosions and nuclear power plants is absent. However, in earth and building materials, members of the radioactive thorium series and40K are in large quantities at Tokyo compared to Chandigarh. The relative concentration of radioactive uranium is comparable at both these places.
