Notes: Abstract Perturbed angular correlation parameters in biological material bovine serum albumin were determined using γ-γ sum peak method and time integral perturbed angular correlation technique, using160Tb as a probe. The attenuation coefficient G22 decreases with an increase in the concentration of the environment resulting in an increase in Äc, the correlation time.

Notes: Abstract In most of the Indian cities drinking water is drawn from shallow aquifers with the help of hand pumps. These shallow aquifers get easily polluted. In the present work we have measured 20 trace elements using Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and 8 chemical parameters using standard chemical methods of drinking water drawn from Rajpura city. It was found that almost all water samples are highly polluted. We attribute this to unplaned disposal of industrial and domestic waste over a period of many decades.

Notes: Abstract K to total capture ratios have been measured explicitly for the first time from the decay of185Os to 880, 874, 717 and 646 keV levels in185Re using the technique of gamma-KX-ray summing in a single intrinsic Ge detector. The results agree with the theoretical values.

Notes: Abstract The electron-capture decay of131Ba (T 1/2=11.7 d) to excited levels of131Cs has been studied using high resolution semiconductor detectors. The presence of 1046.9 keV gamma-ray in between 1170.6 and 123.8 keV levels, in addition to 1047.6 keV gamma-ray from 1047.6 keV level to ground state of131Cs is confirmed through gamma-gamma coincidence measurements. TheK-capture probabilities to 1047 keV, 696 keV and 620 keV levels are measured usingX-gamma coincidence method. The gamma-gamma directional correlation measurements of the cascades 496-123, 240-133, 486-133, 404-216, 480-216 and 832-216 keV are carried out and spins and multipolarities of the levels and transitions involved are studied.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear quadrupole interaction frequencies at133Cs following the electron-capture decay of133Ba for BaSO4, Ba/BrO3/2 and Ba/NO3/2 were obtained by measuring the perturbation of 356–81 keV cascade of133Ba. Nuclear quadrupole interaction frequencies for BaSO4 and Ba/BrO3/2 are 17.2 Mrad sec−1 and 14.6 Mrad sec−1, respectively, while no perturbation of 356–81 keV cascade was observed in case of Ba/NO3/2. Further the possibility of any after-effects of electron-capture decay is ruled out through the measurement of 276–161 keV gamma-gamma directional correlation.

Notes: Abstract Instrumental neutron activation analysis was performed on scalp hair and fingernail samples collected randomly from a group of heavily exposed healthy male industrial workers living in the cities of Hamilton and Toronto (Ont.), Canada. The concentrations of trace elements (Ag, Au, Br, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Fe, Hg, Lu, Mn, Mo, Rb, Ru and T3) were evaluated and compared for scalp hair and fingernails. Various trace elements show similar variations in the two kinds of samples. The results have also been compared with those for normal subjects from USA (scalp hair) and Canada (fingernails).

Notes: Abstract The time integral pertturbed angular correlation (TIPAC) technique is employed to study PAC parameters in aqueous solutions of biomolecules Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), lysozyme and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA), using radioactive147Nd as a probe. The attenuation coefficient (G22) is found to decrease with increasing concentration of BSA The effect of attenuation is more pronounced for protein molecules BSA and lysozyme than in the case of EDTA. The relaxation constant (λ2) increases with increasing concentration of the solution as well as with the increasing size of the solute molecule.

Notes: Abstract The perturbed angular correlation /P.A.C./ technique is employed to investigate the structures of barium ferrite and barium hexaferrite using radioactive133Ba /10.7 Y/ as a probe. The quadrupole interaction frequencies /WQ'S/ are found to be 9.68 and 12.02 Mrad sec−1 for barium ferrite and barium hexaferrite, respectively, showing a drift from usual cubic structure.

Notes: Summary By comparing the natural activities in biosphere and building materials at Chandigarh and Tokyo, we found that at both these places, contamination due to nuclear bomb explosions and nuclear power plants is absent. However, in earth and building materials, members of the radioactive thorium series and40K are in large quantities at Tokyo compared to Chandigarh. The relative concentration of radioactive uranium is comparable at both these places.
