    Notizen: The spectral analysis of time series requires the signal to be at least weakly statonary; i.e., the mean, (co-) variance, and spectrum of the time series should not vary from segment to segment. It is commonly assumed that psychophysiological time series are not stationary. This study introduces a nonstationarity test to the psychophysiological literature, which is derived from evolutionary spectral analysis. Basically, the test consists of a double window technique in both the time and frequency domains, leading to a two-way analysis of variance for times and frequencies. In the current study, the nonstationarity test is applied to heart rate data obtained in a typical psychophysiological setting. Heart rate and respiration were measured in four age groups under four conditions—rest, paced breathing, vigilance, and reaction time. The results indicate that only few physiological time series were completely stationary. However, for every subject, and in every condition stationary strectches could be found that were long enough to apply spectral analysis. Spectral measures (power, coherence, and phase spectra) were then compared for stationary parts of the data and the total data. This comparison indicated that nonstationarity affects all spectral measures. Most importantly, Stationarity × Task Condition × Frequency Band interactions were observed for coherence and phase spectra, and there were significant interactions with age for each of the spectral indices. These findings suggest that nonstationarity may result in biased outcomes of significance tests of the effects of task manipulations on the spectral indices of cardiac time series. Thus, it was concluded that the stationarity test should be routinely applied in the spectral analysis of physiological time series. In addition, it was suggested that the nonstationarity test has an even wider range of application that might be of interest to the psychophysiologist.

    Notizen: The present study used a computer model of the dynamic interaction between the vagus nerve and the sinoatrial pacemaker membrane potential in the heart of the rabbit to reconstruct heart rate changes under vagal excitation conditions. We asked whether a hypothetical pattern of vagal acetylcholine (ACh) release, which was based on human heart rate results in a reaction time task, could be fit to this model. The reconstructed heart rate results showed changes that were highly consistent with experimental human heart rate changes. The model reliably reproduced effects of parameters such as intrinsic heart rate level, ACh stimulus intensity, and ACh stimulus duration. In addition, the effects of anticipatory vagal ACh release, stimulus-induced ACh, and subsequent blocking of ACh, which usually interact in human cardiac cycle time functions, could be untangled in the reconstructed heart rate results. We concluded that the mathematical model may be useful for formulating hypotheses and constructing experimental task designs for studies of human heart rate.

    Notizen: Frequency-dependent transfer from EOG to EEG may be insufficiently accounted for by simple time domain regression methods (Gasser, Sroka, & Möcks, 1986; Woestenburg, Verbaten, & Slangen, 1983). In contrast, a multiple-lag time domain regression analysis, using lagged regression of EEG on EOG, must theoretically account for both frequency dependence and independence.Two data sets were constructed, in which the transfer from EOG to EEG was either frequency-independent (constant gain) or frequency-dependent. Subsequently, three different correction methods were applied: 1) a simple regression analysis in the time domain; 2) a multiple-lag regression analysis in the time domain; and 3) a regression analysis in the frequency domain.The major results were that, for data set 1, the three methods constructed the original EEG equally well. With data set 2, reconstruction of the original EEG was achieved reasonably well with the frequency domain method and the time domain multiple-lag method, but not with simple time domain regression. These three correction procedures were also applied to real data, consisting of concomitantly recorded EEG and high-variance EOG series. No appreciable differences in outcome of the three methods were observed, and estimated transfer parameters suggested that these data were marked by weak frequency dependence only, which can be accounted for by simple time domain regression (and also by the other two methods).

    Notizen: The aim of this study was to assess the error made by violating the assumption of stationarity when using Fourier analysis for spectral decomposition of heart period power. A comparison was made between using Fourier and Wavelet analysis (the latter being a relatively new method without the assumption of stationarity). Both methods were compared separately for stationary and nonstationary segments. An ambulatory device was used to measure the heart period data of 40 young and healthy participants during a psychological stress task and during periods of rest. Surprisingly small differences (〈1%) were found between the results of both methods, with differences being slightly larger for the nonstationary segments. It is concluded that both methods perform almost identically for computation of heart period power values. Thus, the Wavelet method is only superior for analyzing heart period data when additional analyses in the time-frequency domain are required.
