Notes: Abstract The determination of the weight per unit area (“coating weight”) of phosphate layers on galvanized steel by means of FT-IR-spectrometry has been performed by three different techniques: (i) principal component regression (PCR) of absorption data, (ii) utilizing the thickness dependent wavenumber shift of a band due to a special optical surface effect observed with parallel-polarized radiation and (iii) of an interference band observed with perpendicular-polarized radiation.

Notes: Abstract Hopeite-type phosphate coatings in which zinc is replaced by other metals like nickel, manganese and magnesium are of great interest as conversion coatings on galvanized steel in the automotive and appliance industries. The analytical characterization of such coatings produced in special processes is not possible by XRD because the different types of hopeite are isomorphic. In this paper it is shown that the kind of metal substitution is responsible for certain specific features in the infrared reflection spectra. Furthermore the structural changes caused by dehydration due to heating of the coatings were studied and differences in the thermal stability of the different coatings thus could be observed.

Notes: Abstract  The application of factor analysis in EDXRF as a method for evaluation of elemental concentrations and calculation of net peak areas is demonstrated in two examples. A quantitative PCR-analysis of sulphur interfered with by molybdenum could be performed by using the XRF-spectra as input with a standard error of analysis (SEA) below 0.2 mg/g for aqueous and 3.6 mg/g for solid samples. By using PCR-predicted net peak areas as input for the empirical evaluation method developed by Lucas-Tooth and Price, the SEA for solid samples could be decreased to 2.3 mg/g. The comparison of PCR to PLS showed no significant difference.

Notes: Summary Infrared emission spectroscopy at moderate temperatures has been applied for analytical investigations in special cases only, often using Michelson interferometers. It is shown here that the sensitivity and accuracy of an IR grating instrument with high-performance optics and electronic recording allows emission spectra of good quality to be taken on a routine basis. Evaluation is performed by a minicomputer coupled on-line to the spectrometer. The sample is placed at its usual position in the sample compartment and has to be kept at a constant elevated temperature. Especially for the investigation of thin films on metals, this is a powerful analytical method and may offer advantages over other methods.

Notes: Summary Usual sensitivities in infrared spectroscopy [27] allow for measurement of thin films on metals down to about 1 μ. If films are much thinner special methods have to be applied. One of these is Reflection Absorption Spectrometry (IR-RAS) using infared radiation with large angles of incidence and a polarization plane parallel to the plane of incidence. The sensitivity gain of IR-RAS is best utilized with computer-aided dispersive or Fourier-Transform spectrometers. As Infared Spectroscopy provides a high amount of information about undestroyed molecular or ionogenous surface species, IR-RAS is becoming an important supplement to methods like ESCA, Auger and SIMS.

Description / Table of Contents: Vibrational Spectra of Isotope-labelled B-Trifluoro and B-Trichloro BorazinesThe infrared and Raman spectra of (BF—NH)3, (10BF—NH)3, (BF—ND)3, (BCl—NH)3, (10BCl—NH)3, (BCl - 15NH)3, (10BCl - 15NH)3, (BCl—ND)3, (10BCl—ND)3, (BCl - 15ND)3 and (10BCl - 15ND)3 have been recorded. Most of the recent assignments are confirmed and supplemented by heretofore missing Raman frequencies of species A′1 and E″. For six of the seven vibrations of species E′ of (BF - NH)3, the Coriolis coupling constants have been computed from the band envelopes of the gas phase infrared spectra.
