    Notes: Abstract Criteria used to define outbreaking and non-outbreaking populations of Acanthaster planci are described. Estimates of starfish density were derived for these population types from a series of intensive underwater surveys and from calibrated manta-tow surveys of 334 reefs within the Great Barrier Reef, from January to October 1987. By comparison of these data, density differences were identified between the two populations. Both the mean density and total numbers of non-cryptic crown-of-thorns starfish in outbreaking populations are at least one order of magnitude greater than that in non-outbreaking populations. Non-outbreaking populations may comprise up to 1500 starfish km-2, an order of magnitude less than some previous estimates for reefs within the Great Barrier Reef. Densities of ≳1500 starfish km-2 indicate that an individual reef may be experiencing an outbreak. This density is equivalent to an average of 0.22 starfish per 2 min manta tow over the whole reef. Approximately 90% of reefs classified as out-breaking on the Great Barrier Reef had densities of 〉1500 starfish km-2, while about 96.5% of reefs classified as non-outbreaking had densities below this level.

    Notes: Summary After routine inguinal herniorrhaphy we gave 12 patients a wound infiltration regimen of bolus doses of 20 ml of 0.5% bupivacaine via a catheter within the wound and rectally administered indomethacin (100 mg). Peak venous plasma bupivacaine concentrations ranged from 0.07 mg·l−1 to 1.14mg·l−1 (mean (SD) 0.47 (0.33) mg·l−1), and occurred at between 0.25 and 2 h after the first dose. Plasma concentrations were well below the toxic threshold of 4 mg·l−1 and there was no accumulation. The regimen provided satisfactory analgesia. There were no wound infections nor signs of toxicity.

    Notes: Abstract EISCAT observations of interplanetary scintillation have been used to measure the velocity of the solar wind at distances between 15 and 130R⊙ (solar radii) from the Sun. The results show that the solar wind consists of two distinct components, a fast stream with a velocity of ∼ 800 km s−1 and a slow stream at ∼ 400 kms−1. The fast stream appears to reach its final velocity much closer to the Sun than expected. The results presented here suggest that this is also true for the slow solar wind. Away from interaction regions the flow vector of the solar wind is purely radial to the Sun. Observations have been made of fast wind/slow wind interactions which show enhanced levels of scintillation in compression regions.

    Notes: Abstract EISCAT observations of the interplanetary scintillation of a single source were made over an extended period of time, during which the orientation of the baselines between the two observing sites changed significantly. Assuming that maximum correlation between the scintillations observed at the two sites occurs when the projected baseline is parallel to the direction of plasma flow, this technique can be used to make a unique determination of the direction of the solar wind. In the past it has usually been assumed that the plasma flow is radial, but measurements of eleven sources using this technique have indicated conclusively that in at least six cases observed at mid or high heliocentric latitude there is a significant non-radial component directed in four cases towards the heliocentric equator and in two cases towards the pole.

    Notes: Abstract Co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) between fast and slow streams of plasma are a prominent feature of the solar wind. Measurements of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) using the three widely separated antennas of the EISCAT facility have been used to detect the compression regions at the leading edges of interaction regions and to determine the location and velocity of the structure. Observations show that interaction regions have developed as close to the Sun as 25–30 solar radii, a result supported by theoretical modelling which shows that the conditions needed for CIRs to develop exist inside 30 solar radii.

    Notes: Abstract Simultaneous observations of the slow solar wind off the southeast limb of the Sun were made in May 1999 using optical measurements from the C2 and C3 LASCO coronagraphs on board the SOHO spacecraft and radio-scattering measurements from the MERLIN and EISCAT facilities. The observations show the slow solar wind accelerating outwards from 4.5 solar radii (R), reaching a final velocity of 200–300 km s-1 by 25–30 R. The acceleration profile indicated by these results is more gentle than the average profile seen in earlier LASCO observations of larger scale features, but is within the variation seen in these studies.

    Notes: Abstract Observations of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) allow accurate solar wind velocity measurements to be made at all heliographic latitudes and at a range of distances from the Sun. The data may be obtained with either single, double or multiple antennas, each requiring a different method of analysis. IPS data taken during the 1998 whole sun month (30th July–31st August 1998) by EISCAT, the ORT (Ooty Radio Telescope), India, and the Nagoya IPS system, Japan, allow the results of individual methods of analysis to be compared. Good agreement is found between the velocity measurements using each method, and when combined an improved understanding of the structure of the solar wind can be obtained.

    Notes: Since the introduction of anti-Rhesus (Rh) D prophylaxis for RhD-negative women, other Rh and non-Rh red cell alloantibodies have become relatively more important and are now responsible for the greater proportion of haemolytic disease of the newborn. Anti-C and anti-E are the most commonly implicated non-D Rh antibodies in the pathogenesis of haemolytic disease of the newborn1. In 1977 Pepperell et al.2 reported the outcome of 44 women with anti-E. This is the only published series that investigates the implications of anti-E during pregnancy. The present report presents a retrospective study of the outcome of 122 pregnancies in which anti-E was the sole alloantibody detected.

    Notes: The bonding chemistry of various GaAs-to-oxide/GaAs bonded samples was investigated using multiple internal transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for thermally annealed and thermocompression annealed samples. The oxides used in these investigations included a native GaAs oxide as well as two compositions of borosilicate glass (BSG) deposited by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). For the thermally annealed samples, the hydrogen-bonded H2O/OH groups on the hydrophilic surface form a room temperature bond without the application of pressure. Chemical changes at the wafer-bonded interface occur in two temperature regions. For anneals between 200 and 400 °C for 1 h in N2, the H2O/OH groups react and evolve H that becomes absorbed within the oxide. The LPCVD BSG oxide was chemically unaltered during anneals in this temperature range, however, the GaAs native oxide underwent chemical modification. Initially, the GaAs oxide consisted of As(III)–O and Ga–O related oxides. The As(III)–O oxides react to form free As and Ga–O during annealing between 200 and 400 °C. For anneals between 500 and 600 °C, the reaction of H2O/OH groups continue and the H becomes infrared inactive, most likely forming H2 voids at the bonded interface. In addition, As(V)–O related oxides were observed during thermal annealing in this temperature range. No detectable chemical changes in the BSG were observed over the temperature range investigated. Samples that were annealed under an estimated 1–10 MPa of pressure had similar chemical changes to thermally annealed samples.© 2001 American Institute of Physics.
