Notes: A number of mechanisms (both mechanical and chemical) have been proposed as the cause of dentin adhesion. Extensive research in Japan during the past 10 years has shown that strong, long-lived bonds between resin and living dentin will form when a monomer such as 4-META, which contains both hydrophilic and hydrophobic chemical groups, penetrates the tissue and polymerizes in situ. This resin-impregnation creates a transitional “hybrid” layer, that is neither resin nor tooth, but a hybrid of the two. The thin layer of resin-reinforced dentin locks the two dissimilar substances together on a molecular level, sealing the surface against leakage and imparting a high degree of acid resistance.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé 1.
Abstract: Zusammenfassung 1. 5. Auch andere Organe (z.B. Adenohypophyse, Leber, Nebenniere und Nebenschilddrüse) der KK-Mäuse weisen Veränderungen auf.
Notes: Summary This review demonstrates the following points:1. By glucose tolerance test and the determination of non-fasting blood sugar values, mice of KK strain (a Japanese strain) have been shown to be in a diabetic state. 2. KK mice have greater than normal body weights, and moderate obesity. 3. Pancreatic insulin activity and adenohypophyseal growth hormone content of KK mice are greater than those of C75BL mice. 4. The pancreas of KK mice presents many striking changes, such as the hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the islets, the hypertrophy and degranulation of B cells, the abundance of B cell ribosomes and endoplasmic reticulum, the enlargement of the Golgi areas of B cells, and the diminution of the zinc content of insular cells. 5. In other organs (eg. adenohypophysis, liver, adrenal and parathyroid) of KK mice, many changes are also observed. The above features of KK mice are discussed in relation to the presumed metabolic disorder in the mice.

Notes: Superplastic viscous deformation and thermal crystallization behavior of supercooled liquid in Zr60.0Al15.0Ni25.0 metallic glass were investigated. The temperature interval of the supercooled liquid region (∆Tx) was 83 K. The supercooled liquid showed significant viscous plasticity, resultingin large elongation and high strain rate deformation. The stress-strain behavior can be classified into three types: stress overshoot, stable viscous flow with constant flow stress and strain hardening. The strain hardening is due to the precipitation of Zr6Al2Ni crystalline phase with ellipsoidal morphology. Superplastic viscous deformation behavior is very sensitive to thermal crystallization as well as todeformation temperature and strain rate

Notes: Abstract We demonstrate the nanosecond time-gated spectroscopy of plume luminescence in UV laser ablation of human hair. Clear and sharp peaks of calcium ion (Ca+) appear in the spectrum although the Ca content is only 0.1% in human hair. Highly sensitive detection of Ca is thus possible. In the experiment, the peak intensity of Ca+ was measured for human hair samples of female subjects over a wide range of age, and compared to the bone mineral density of the lumbar vertebrae of the subjects themselves. Our experimental results suggest that this specific spectroscopy has the potential for novel diagnoses including monitoring of daily Ca intake and a screening diagnosis of osteoporosis. The spectroscopic system and time transition of plume-luminescence spectra are also described.

Notes: Summary Light and electron microscopic observations have been made on the adenohypo-physeal tissues of male mice which belong to either KK or C57 BL/6 strain, and the following results were obtained. 1. The acidophil cells of KK mice show evidence of hypertrophy and hyperplasia as compared with those of C57 BL/6 animals. The cytoplasm of the cells exhibits an intense stainability with orange G. Electron microscopically α cells of KK mice show an abundance of secretory granules and the scarcity and irregular arrangement of endoplasmic reticulum. 2. The PAS-basophil cells seen in the interior of the gland occur less frequently in KK mice than in C57 BL/6 animals. 3. The FSH cells of KK mice contain a larger number of distinct granules and have a larger Golgi complex than those of C57 BL/6 mice. 4. In the both mouse strains examined, three types of agranular cells are distinguished in the pituitary gland. Of these three cell types, only one type shows a variation in frequency with different strains; namely, it appears occasionally in C57 BL/6 mice, while being rare in KK animals. 5. The present observations on the fine structures of the anterior pituitary cells in C57 BL/6 mice are almost coincident with Barnes' reports (1962, 1964) on the ultrastructure of the same gland. 6. Both the light and electron microscopic features of the anterior pituitary cells in KK mice were discussed in relation to the metabolic disorders which have been presumed from a series of our previous studies on several organs of the diabetic animals (Nakamura, 1965; Nakamura and Yamada jr., 1965; Yamada jr., 1965).

Notes: Summary The pancreatic islets of diabetic (KK) and control (C57 BL/6) strains of the mouse have been studied by histochemical methods for the demonstration of a series of hydrolyzing enzymes, and the following results were obtained. 1. In KK mice alkaline phosphatase activity is demonstrated in fewer insular cells and more vascular walls than in control animals. 2. The islet cells of older KK mice exhibiting persistent glucosuria react for acid phosphatase less intensely than those of control animals. 3. In the islet cells of KK animals glucose-6-phosphatase activity is significantly higher than that revealed by the cells of control mice. 4. The islet cells of both the KK and control mice exhibit moderate ATP-ase activity, and there is no strain difference in the morphological features of the enzyme activity. 5. All the present enzymorphological data were discussed with special reference to the presumed metabolic disturbance in the diabetic (KK) mice.

Notes: Retinyl acetate (RA)-sensitive variants (RAs-2 and RAs-3) of V79 cell line were isolated after mutagenesis with N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. The variants were stable and showed a 3- to 4-fold increase in sensitivity to RA compared to parental V79 cells. The RAs-2 clone was also sensitive to retinol and retinol palmitate. The RA-sensitivity behaves as a recessive trait in all hybrids of RAs-2 and V79. A number of physiological parameters were indistinguishable in V79 and RAs-2 cells, including the extent of uptake of [3H]retinol, the release of K+ from the cells induced by RA, and the levels of retinol and retinoic acid binding proteins. However, one possible correlation with the RA-sensitive phenotype was observed: Gomori acid-phosphatase staining of RA-treated RAs-2 and V79 cells indicated that lysosomal membrane of RAs-2 cells was more labile than those of the parental V79 cells.

Notes: Summary Cytological and histological observations have been made on the pancreatic islets of a diabetic (KK) strain of the mouse, and of control mice which belong to either C57BL/6 or ddN strains, and the following results were obtained. 1. In the pancreas of the diabetic mouse strain a certain number of irregularly contoured islets and occasional insular hypertrophy and hyperplasia are observed in contrast to the insular tissues of control animals. 2. The insular B cells of KK animals are seen to undergo cellular hypertrophy. The intracellular granules of this cell type are smaller in amount, colored darker and more coarse in size in KK individuals than in control animals. 3. In some insular tissues of KK mice there occur frequently varying degrees of sinusoidal dilatation of blood capillaries. 4. The cytoplasm of the insular A cells in KK animals is of a fine granulation which tends to be colored in a significantly less intense rose pink shade than that in control individuals. 5. The average proportion of the insulare A cells in KK mice is assumed to be strikingly small. 6. The dithizone reaction of the cytoplasm of the insular B cells in KK animals denotes the scarcity of the cellular zinc content. 7. The present morphological data on the pancreatic islets of the diabetic mouse strain have been discussed in relation to growth hormone secretion of the anterior pituitary of the animals.

Notes: Using the effective wavelength concept, it is derived theoretically that the reciprocal of the analyte-line intensity is linearly correlated with the reciprocal of the weight fraction of the analyte. This linear relationship is substantiated experimentally in some liquid and fusion product samples. Two ways of application of the relationship in X-ray fluorescence analysis and their advantages are also described. It is emphasized that if the relationship is used the construction of calibration curves is not required.
