    Notes: Summary Flow cytometric DNA analysis was carried out in 35 meningiomas. Thirty-three had diploid stem lines while two were aneuploid having a triploid DNA mode. Both aneuploid meningiomas were grossly huge nodular tumours and one had malignant histologic features. Flow cytometry in meningiomas is a rapid means of determining the DNA modes and adds objective information to microscopy. Appropriate cases may be selected for further cytogenetic studies.

    Notes: Summary Seven normal human striated urethral and anal sphincters obtained by autopsy were examined using histochemical techniques. In both the urethral sphincter and the subcutaneous (s.c.) and superficial part of the anal sphincter a characteristic pattern with two populations of muscle fibers, abundant connective tissue, and numerous intramuscular nerves are seen. No spindles are observed. The muscle fibers, particularly the predominant type 1 fibers are very small (about 15 μm in diameter). The fiber characteristics of the sphincters indicate that these muscles have a capacity to produce sustained contractions and to react in stress conditions with fast increase in tension.

    Notes: Summary A case of a new hereditary neurological condition with extensive calcifications of the central nervous system is described. The calcium deposits were especially localized to the leptomeninges, the first layer of the cerebral and cerebellar cortex, and along the ventricular wall. The neuropathological findings were in accordance with the clinic. The case was familial and the pedigree suggested an X-linked recessive inheritance.

    Notes: Summary The brain from a 22-year-old man with progressive myoclonal epilepsy (Lafora's disease) was examined. Besides widespread inclusion bodies in the nerve cells calcifications were seen on the inner and outer surface of the brain. No gliosis was present but the astrocytes were enlarged. They were unrelated to the inclusion bodies, as demonstrated in combined stainings with glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-PAS or GFAP-Bodian. A transport of an abnormal metabolic product is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Employing a special batch technique which involves extremely low concentrations of the alga Selenastrum capricornutum, it is shown that a growth rate of ca. 75% of optimum growth occurs at a concentration of 0.02 μg-at N(NH4 +) l-1. The low concentrations of this N-source in the oligotrophic parts of the oceans (ca. 0.06 μg-at l-1) thus give rise to a borderline deficiency. As the half-saturation constant (K S) for growth was recorded at 0.05 μg-at N(NO3 -), this ion can hardly be of much importance at the low concentrations present in these parts of the oceans. It is wrong to assert that N is the primary limiting nutrient. Phosphate also is found at concentrations giving rise to a borderline deficiency.

    Notes: Abstract Copper in ionic form is found to be very poisonous for photosynthesis and growth of unicellular algae at concentrations of Cu usually found in natural waters. This indicates that Cu is ordinarily not present in ionic form but is complexed by organic matter such as polypeptides. The affinity of Cu to diethyl-dithiocarbaminate is very much higher than to the organic matter which complexes Cu in nature. Thus, it is not possible to distinguish the two forms of Cu during analysis. Complexed Cu is not poisonous to algae. It has recently been shown that ocean water in the centres of upwelling becomes suitable for plankton growth only after the addition of a chelator. This suggests that a large part of the Cu found in the subsurface waters of the oceans is present in ionic form. Some manufactures of C14 ampoules have used ordinary distilled water which often has a content of about 250 μg Cu/l. Thus, it is very likely that some productivity measurements have been influenced. A likely example is mentioned.

    Notes: Summary We have studied the pharmacokinetics of ceftazidime in 37 patients suffering from serious bacterial infections. All the patients had impairment of renal function and received moderate to high doses of frusemide concurrently. The doses of ceftazidime were given according to renal function as recommended by the manufacturer. Serum and urine samples were frequently collected, and drug concentrations measured by high performance liquid chromatography. The patients were grouped and evaluated according to renal function, mean (SD) creatinine clearances ranging from 70.1 (12.4) to 11.0 (3.2) ml·min−1. The pharmacokinetics of ceftazidime depended on renal function. A statistically significant increase in ceftazidime elimination half-life and decreases in urinary recovery, total body clearance, and renal clearance in proportion to the decrease in renal function were observed (p〈0.05). The apparent volume of distribution also increased, but not significantly (p〉0.05). A linear correlation was found between the total body and renal clearances of ceftazidime and creatinine clearance. The extrarenal clearance increased from 3.9 to 14.0 ml·min−1 with decreasing renal function. Concurrent treatment with ceftazidime and moderate to high doses of frusemide did not impair renal function and no evidence of nephrotoxicity was found.

    Notes: Summary After administration of ceftazidime as a 1 g i.v. bolus injection, its concentration was measured by HPLC at frequent intervals in serum, bile and tissue from different parts of the biliary tract in 32 patients undergoing operation for biliary tract disease. In bile from the functioning gallbladder and common bile duct, a high concentration of ceftazidime was found, mean 18.5 and 26.6 mg/l, respectively. In bile from the non-functioning gallbladder, a very low concentration was found (〈1.5 mg/l). Ceftazidime in the gallbladder wall varied considerably with the type and degree of inflammation judged histologically; the mean level was 21.3 mg/kg. The elimination half-life of ceftazidime was 1.74 h, apparent volume of distribution 20.01 and total plasma clearance 133 ml/min. In bile from T-tube specimens a high concentration was found, the mean peak values being 27.2 mg/l. However, biliary excretion of the drug was low at less than 0.5% of the administered dose. These concentrations of ceftazidime were sufficient to inhibit the in-vitro growth of pathogens, namely theEnterobacteriaecae commonly responsible for biliary tract infection.
