    Notes: Abstract 46 upper and lower molars with furcation grade II involvement were selected from 16 patients with periodontal disease. The teeth were randomly allocated to the following groups according to treatment; (1) 4 consecutive administrations of tetracycline-immobilized cross-linked collagen film (TC film) at intervals of 1 week (TC group); (2) 1 root planing treatment (RP group); (3) combination treatment (TC + RP group); (4) no treatment (control group). The therapeutic effects of each treatment were compared both clinically and micro-biologically. Records of plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing depth, probing attachment level and microscopic counts were obtained at 0, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. The results showed marked decreases in probing depth and density of micro-organisms in both the RP and TC + RP groups. In particular, the TC + RP group was characterized by a decreased rate of bleeding on pocket probing and an increased probing attachment gain. The above findings demonstrated that root planing is effective in the treatment of furcation involvement and that the effects are enhanced by the local administration of TC films.

    Notes: Abstract Brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 30 patients with meningomyelocele and shunted hydrocephalus ranging in age from birth to 33 years. Twenty-two of them had Chiari II malformation, one of which was symptomatic. In 22 cases, including 15 with Chiari II malformation, BAEPs were recorded repeatedly after periods ranging from 18 months to 7 years. The results were as follows: (1) III–V interpeak latency (IPL) decreased progressively from prolonged to the normal range with growth until 25 years of age; (2) I–III IPL tended to prolong gradually from the normal range; (3) these findings may indicate that the natural history of Chiari II malformation is delayed maturation of the brain stem and intensification in the elongation and stretching of the hindbrain and lower cranial nerves.

    Notes: Abstract Brainstem function in patients with Chiari-II malformation was evaluated by brainstem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs). All cases had associated hydrocephalus, some of which were shunted. The effect of the shunting operation on the wave forms was examined as well as the age-wave relationships. Although the shunting operation resulted in shortened brainstem conduction time, the overall postshunt responses were still far from normal. Another significant finding was that whereas there were remarkable abnormalities in recorded wave-forms in cases younger than 8 years, normal or almost normal responses were obtained in all cases older than 8. BAEP abnormalities could not be correlated with the severity of meningomyelocele, nor was the predictive value of response in assessing potential risk of symptomatic Chiari malformation established.

    Notes: Abstract Twenty patients with meningomyelocele (MMC) and shunted hydrocephalus, ranging in age from 3 to 23 years old, underwent serial recording of short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median nerve stimulation, on the basis of which to assess the evolution of dysfunction in the brainstem and its connections (cervical spinal cord, cervical nerve roots, lower cranial nerves). Eighteen patients had Chiari type II malformations, none of which was symptomatic. In all 20 patients, serial SEP recordings were obtained repeatedly after periods ranging from 2 to 7 years. The results were as follows: (1) the ratio of $$EP - N\overline {13}$$ interpeak latencies (IPLs) to body height (BH) tended to lengthen gradually after starting in the normal range with growth. (2) In contrast, the ratio $$N\overline {13} - N\overline {20}$$ IPLs/BH decreased continously to the normal range with growth, after initial prolongation. These findings and our earlier studies of brainstem auditory evoked potentials suggest that compression and traction result in strangulation of the cervical spinal cord and kinked medulla as well as stretching of the cervical nerve roots and lower cranial nerves. However, primary intrinsic functional disorders of the brainstem appeared to improve gradually during growth. The natural history of Chiari type II malformations involves these opposing dynamic phenomena in the hindbrain and its connections.

    Notes: Abstract This study was conducted to determine whether hypothermia inhibited alveolar epithelial injury in the resected human lung during preservation. Hyposmotic albumin solution, 248mOsm/kg, was instilled into the alveolar spaces of resected human lungs which were inflated with an airway pressure of 7 cmH2O and stored at either 37°C or 8°C for 4h. Alveolar fluid was aspirated and the influx of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and globulin into the alveolar spaces, as markers of alveolar epithelial injury, was measured. Ion transport and fluid clearance across the alveolar epithelium were calculated by the changes in electrolyte and albumin concentrations in the alveolar fluid, respectively. While the LDH levels and globulin concentrations increased significantly in the hyposmotic experiments at 37°C, hypothermia inhibited these increases. Alveolar fluid clearance at 37°C increased to 20% in the hyposmotic experiments compared with 12% in the control isosmotic experiments; however, sodium and chloride transport in the hyposmotic experiments was not significantly different from that in the isosmotic experiments. Thus, we conclude that hypothermia at 8°C inhibits alveolar epithelial injury caused by the hyposmotic solution in resected human lungs. Moreover, alveolar ion and fluid clearance mechanisms were preserved across the injured alveolar epithelial cells.

    Notes: Abstract The electrically elicited blink reflex (BR) was studied in 30 patients with meningomyelocele (MMC), including 21 with Chiari type II malformation. The relationship between the BR and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) is discussed with regard to its use-fulness in the evaluation of MMC's brainstem dysfunction. The following results were obtained: (1) The R2 component was abnormal in 90% of these patients. The BR disclosed subclinical lesions in the medulla oblongata which were not detected by BAEPs alone. (2) In all patients in whom the BAEPs suggested the presence of stretched cochlear nerves, the BR indicated the existence of some dysfunction of the medulla oblongata. (3) No close relationship was found between the dysfunction detected by the BR and the degree of hindbrain anomaly on the neuroimaging. (4) Combining results from assessment of the measurement of the BR and BAEPs permits evaluation of the function of the fifth, seventh, and eighth cranial nerves, as well as the brainstem including the medulla oblongata, which is more comprehensive than evaluation by neuroimaging alone.

    Notes: Abstract Levels of the granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) were determined in the plasma and resected lung tissue from patients who underwent pulmonary resection. Moreover, the effect of recombinant human (rh) G-CSF on the permeability of pulmonary endothelium and on liquid clearance from the alveolar spaces was investigated in rabbits. The plasma levels of G-CSF increased from 30 pg/ml preoperatively to 409 ± 236 pg/ml 3 h postoperatively (P 〈 0.05), while the levels of G-CSF in the resected lung tissue were increased in the alveolar fluid, to 1,834 ± 1,054 pg/ml, and in the pulmonary blood, to 5,466 ± 2,019 pg/ml. It was found that rh G-CSF 25 μg administered into the subcutaneous tissue of rabbits increased extravascular lung water to 3.45 ± 0.26 vs 2.98 ± 0.20 in control experiments (P 〈 0.05); however, rhG-CSF 0.75 pg/kg administered into the alveloar spaces did not affect liquid clearance from the alveolar spaces. The findings of this study led us to conclude that G-CSF is synthesized in the human lung and increases the permeability of pulmonary endothelium, but not liquid clearance across the alveolar epithelium.

    Notes: Anion exchange membranes (ferricyanide ion type) prepared by the “paste method” were treated with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide, and the resultant microporous membranes had no ion exchange capacity but water permeability. By measuring the water permeability of the membranes and observing the electron microphotographs of the membrane surfaces, it was elucidated that the anion exchange membranes contained microheterogeneity of colloidal dimension.

    Notes: Styrene and the styrene-additive mixtures (kerosene, dioxane, ethylene dichloride, or dioctylphthalate) were soaked into a poly(vinylchloride) film and then styrene was polymerized. Subsequently, poly(styrene) was extracted with CCl4 and the microporous membrane was obtained, of which the morphology was studied. It is elucidated that the additives affect the morphology of the resultant composite films.
