Cyclophanes, XXI1). The Chemical Behavior of [8]Paracyclophane: Reactions of the Benzene RingPreparative quantities of [8]paracyclophane (1b) may be prepared from [8]paracyclophane-3,6-dione (9) by Wolff-Kishner reduction. After a detailed discussion of the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of 1b, its behavior in substitution and addition reactions is described. Bromination in the presence of iron(III) bromide provides the [8]metacyclophanes 17, 21, and 24 as well as the ringopened bromides 16 and 19. Dehalogenation of 24 with lithium amalgam generates the bridged dehydrobenzene 23 which is trapped by furan to provide adduct 22. Under the influence of hydrogen chloride/aluminium trichoride, 1b isomerizes to [8]metacyclophane (15), which rearranges further to benzocyclodecene (18). Friedel-Crafts acylation of 1b with phthalic anhydride leads to the meta-bridged ketocarboxylic acid 25. By an intramolecular electrophilic substitution reaction the ditosylate 27 reacts to 2a,3,4,4a-tetrahydropyracene (31) during acetolysis or pyrolysis, respectively. Catalytic hydrogenation of 1 b with platinum proceeds to the monoene stage 32 in ethyl acetate, whereas the saturated hydrocarbon 10 is produced in acetic acid. Besides the dienes 33 and 34 the olefin 32 is also formed in the Birch reduction of 1 b; when heated in the presence of tetracyanoethylene 33 and 34 rearomatize. Diels-Alder addition of 1 b with perfluoro-1-butyne and dicyanoacetylene (35, R = CF, and CN, respectively) furnishes the adducts 37a and b, whereas the reaction with tetracyanoethylene stops at the π-complex stage 36. On irradiation in the presence of acetone, adduct 37a photoisomerizes to the bridged semibullvalene 39, while 1 b, on direct irradiation, polymerizes.
Notes:
