Cyclophanes, XXII1,2). The Chemical Behavior of [8]Paracyclophane: Reactions of the Polymethylene BridgeThe chemical behavior of [8]paracyclophanes functionalized in the polymethylene bridge has been investigated. The reaction of trans-[8]paracyclophan-4-ene (3) with dichloro- and dibromocarbene provides under exclusive attack of the bridge double bond the adducts 14 and 15, respectively. Reduction of 14 with sodium/liquid ammonia yields 16, which may also be prepared directly by methylenation 3 with diazomethane/copper(I) chloride. Reaction of 15 with methyllithium provides the allene 17. cis-Hydroxylation of 3 with osmium tetraoxide/pyridine yields the cis-diol 19, via complex 18 as a reaction intermediate. Epoxidation of 3 with 3-chloroperbenzoic acid yields epoxide 20, which is stable towards basic reagents; it is opened, however, by lithium aluminium hydride and deuteride to 21 and 22, respectively. The bromine addition of 3 to 23 proceeds as a cis-addition as well. The assignment of the stereochemistry of compounds 14 - 17 and 19 - 23 is based on nuclear magnetic resonance spectra as well as spectra comparisons. Decomposition of the bistosylhydrazone 24, available in quantitative yield from 9 and p-toluenesulfonohydrazide, with sodium methoxide provides a diene mixture from which 26 is isolated chromatographically.
Notes:
