Notes: A qualitative study was made by electron diffraction of the short-range-order diffuse scattering from disordered Au-Pd, α phase Au-Zn, and α phase Ag-Mg alloys. Twofold and fourfold splittings of diffuse maxima are observed at 100, 110 and equivalent positions on the diffraction patterns with the incident beam parallel to [001], in the composition ranges from about 28 to 62 at.% Pd for Au-Pd, from about 7 to 24 at.% Zn for Au-Zn and from about 11 to 28 at.% Mg for Ag-Mg systems. The separation of the split diffuse maxima increases monotonically with Pd, Zn or Mg content. The results can be interpreted with the Fermi-surface-imaging concept proposed by Krivoglaz. The variation with composition of the Fermi wave vector parallel to the [110] directions is discussed with the nearly-free-electron and the rigid-band models. The latter model is also applied to the experimental results for disordered Cu-Pd and Cu-Pt alloys reported by the present authors [Ohshima & Watanabe (1973). Acta Cryst. A29, 520-526].

Notes: The diffuse X-ray (and electron) scattering from NbC0.72, previously thought to be due to vacancy octahedra, is shown to be dominated by the scattering due to mean-square atomic displacements with wave vectors near the Brillouin-zone boundary. The atomic displacements are similar to those produced by an optical phonon. On the basis of the sign and amplitude of the displacement parameters a model for the environment around a carbon vacancy is proposed.

Notes: The short-range-order diffuse scattering from disordered Cu-Pd and Cu-Pt alloys has been studied by electron diffraction using thin foils prepared from bulk specimens. Twofold and fourfold splittings of diffuse scattering are observed at 100, 110 and equivalent positions in the composition ranges from about 13 to 60 at.% Pd in the Cu-Pd system and up to about 45 at.% Pt in the Cu-Pt system. The separation of the split maxima increases with Pd or Pt content. A close investigation has revealed that the split maxima correspond to the intersections of slightly curved diffuse streaks around the 100 and 110 positions. These results can be interpreted well using the Fermi-surface-imaging theory proposed by Krivoglaz, indicating that the interaction potential in these alloys mainly originates from conduction electrons, and that the diffuse scattering reflects the form of the Fermi surface, i.e. the flatness normal to the (110) directions.

Notes: Triple-crystal diffraction studies are capable of cleanly separating the various experimental components of the scattering in the vicinity of a Brags peak. The two-dimensional intensity distributions obtained in such an experiment consist of various components which extend in distinct directions in (Δωs, Δ2θS) space, where Δωs and Δ2θS are the offset angles of the sample and analyzer/detector from the Bragg condition. One-dimensional 'slice' scans can be used in studying specific details, given a known disposition of the components, be they dynamical, kinematical or aspects of the instrumental arrangement. In this paper triple-crystal diffraction results obtained for given ion-implanted and other Si crystals using both a conventional X-ray tube and a synchrotron source are presented and compared.

Notes: The diffuse X-ray scattering from a single crystal of disordered Cu-29.8 at. % Pd alloy was measured at room temperature. A fourfold splitting of the diffuse scattering due to short-range order was observed at the 110 reciprocal lattice point, in good agreement with the result previously obtained by electron diffraction. With the use of the method proposed by Boric & Sparks [Acta Cryst. (1971), A27, 198-201] the short-range-order parameters were determined by separating the other components of the diffuse scattering, i.e. size effect, Huang and thermal diffuse scattering, from the observed intensity data. It was revealed from this analysis that the order parameters beyond the 15th neighbour shell play an important role in characterizing this short-range-order diffuse scattering, although their magnitudes are small compared with those of the lower order parameters. Based on the ordering theory valid above the critical temperature the atomic-pair-interaction potential ratios were also obtained. It is shown that the pair-interaction potential is of long range and oscillates with distance. A comparison is made between the present result and the form of long-range oscillatory potential predicted by the conduction-electron screening model, and then the form of the Fermi surface is discussed.

Notes: X-ray results are presented on the crystallographic parameters in the basal (ab) plane and the short-range-order diffuse scattering from intercalated silver atoms in disordered stage-2 Ag0.18TiS2 at room temperature. The silver atoms in the intercalated plane occupy the octahedral sites and the in-plane temperature parameter of the silver atoms has a value of B = 3.0 ± 0.1 Å2, suggesting both weak bonding and correspondingly rapid diffusion. Rodlike diffuse scattering parallel to c* at .0, .0 and their equivalent positions is observed and reveals the two-dimensional (2D) feature of the disordered state. From analyzing this 2D diffuse intensity by the method of Borie & Sparks [Acta Cryst. (1971), A27, 198-201], the planar short-range-order parameters were determined. A comparison of this planar short-range order with the 2D Ornstein-Zernike correlation function demonstrates the long-range nature of the 2D short-range order with a correlation range κ-1 of 4.88 ± 0.4 Å. Using a linearized mean-field approximation for the correlation functions of a binary Ising system well above Tc developed by Clapp & Moss [Phys. Rev. (1966), 142, 418-427], a set of oscillatory atomic-pair interaction potential ratios was obtained where the direct interactions were significant out to at least four to five neighbors.

Notes: Aim:  To study the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of 143 cases of primary small and large intestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in Japanese patients who presented between 1981 and 2000.Methods and results:  The new World Health Organization (WHO) classification was used to classify NHL. The patients included 109 males and 34 females, with an average age of 54.1 years. Tumour sites were as follows: ileocaecal (n = 51, 35.7%), ileum (n = 29, 20.3%), rectum (n = 13, 9.1%), and duodenum (n = 11, 7.7%). Macroscopically, 124 cases (86.7%) were classified as tumorous type, 12 (8.4%) as diffuse infiltration type (erosion, superficial ulceration), five (3.5%) as polyposis type, and only two cases (1.4%) as ulceration type. Immunohistochemically, 122 lesions (85.3%) were of B-cell phenotype and 21 lesions (14.7%) were of T-cell phenotype. According to the WHO classification, of the B-cell lymphomas, 84 cases (68.9%) were large cell, 16 (13.1%) were Burkitt, 10 (8.2%) were marginal zone B-cell lymphomas of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), and seven (5.7%) were mantle cell tumours. Among the T-cell lymphomas, 15 (71.4%) were of unspecified type, two (9.5%) were natural killer type, two were anaplastic large-cell lymphomas, one was lymphoblastic, and one was an adult T-cell leukaemia lymphoma. The survival rate for T-cell lymphomas was poorer than for B-cell lymphomas. Among the B-cell lymphomas, mantle cell lymphoma tended to have a poorer prognosis, whereas MALT lymphomas had a better prognosis than other B-cell tumour types. Conclusions:  Our retrospective study of patients with primary malignant lymphomas in the small and large intestines has illustrated the clinical features and outcomes of patients with this disease.
