Notes: Abstract The authors correlated the radiologic and histopathologic characteristics of 108 retinoblastomas in 98 patients. Calcifications were demonstrable bu CT scans in 92.6% of the cases, whereas only 82% wer evident upon routine histologic study. Cases of severe invasion of the optic nerve beyond the lamina cribrosa and up to the surgical margin of the nerve were detected by CT scans. Lesser degrees of invasion could not be determined by the same method. Orbital extension was also demonstrable, whereas invasion limited to the sclera was rarely accessible to CT diagnosis. Choroidal invasion was not detectable. Computerized tomography detected enlargement of the ipsilateral lacrimal gland in 17.5% of patients. This phenomenon correlates with invasion of the choroid and the optic nerve.

Notes: Summary O. passes in review the development of neuro-surgery during the last decades. Both in technical and diagnostic respect progress has been made by which neuro-surgery has become today one of the most important branches of surgery. He points out that now, beside brain ulcers, also functional disturbances can be treated by operative interventions and that psycho-surgery opens a large field for research. In view of the future it would be necessary to introduce neuro-surgery as a teaching-line at universities. The training as a neuro-surgeon requires 2–3 years general surgery 1–2 years neurological-psychiatry and several years neuro-surgical instruction. Neuro-radiological and neuro-pathological experience would be desirable. At last O. suggests the setting up of a European Society for Neurosurgery.

Notes: Summary Sixty-one acoustic neuromas were examined with computed tomography (CT). For differential diagnosis the tumors were thoroughly analyzed for manner of growth, shape, volune, calcification, attenuation pattern, contrast enhancement, presence of peripheral edema, and cisternal deformation.

Notes: Summary Equimolar doses of iohexol and metrizamide (0.48 mmol/kg body weight = 185 mg I/kg), administered in solutions iso- and hyperosmolar to the CSF, were injected subarachnoidally into rabbits under pentobarbital anaesthesia. No excitative effects of iohexol were observed in the behaviour of the rabbits during a 3-h period immediately after the injection. Metrizamide caused significant, severe excitative effects, ranging from hyperexcitability to repeated generalized seizures. The frequency and severity of excitative effects were independent of the osmolality of the metrizamide solutions injected.

Notes: Summary During a 14-day period, 45 of 78 rabbits were treated intravenously with chlorpromazine (5 mg kg-1 day-1). Metrizamide or iohexol was injected subarachnoidally and the neurotoxic effects of each substance on rabbit behaviour were evaluated for 3 h in both chlorpromazine-treated and non-treated rabbits. Chlorpromazine increased both the excitative and the depressive effects of metrizamide and the depressive effects of iohexol. No signs of excitation were observed in chlorpromazine-treated and non-treated rabbits after subarachnoid injections of iohexol. In spite of a free flow of clear fluid from the needle both before and after the intended subarachnoid injection, radiography disclosed that 26 of 67 suboccipital injections inadvertently resulted in a subdural deposition of the contrast medium. Contrast medium effects following subdural injection significantly differed from those following subarachnoid injection.

Notes: Summary The changes of the enhancement of the lesion with time after intravenous administration of contrast medium were measured with computed tomography (CT) in 23 cases of acoustic neuroma. The pattern of high initial enhancement followed by a fairly rapid decrease is confirmed. A more rigorous study of the enhancement pattern using a mathematical description of the enhancement curve of the tumor as well as a measurement of the individual blood enhancement curve is discussed.

Notes: Summary Forty-seven patients with 48 unoperated acoustic neuromas have been studied by computed tomography (CT) with respect to bone changes. CT and conventional X-ray examination of the skull were compared. The importance of using a small collimator, proper selection of the plane of the CT section and changing of the window level is stressed. CT detects porus changes as accurately as conventional X-ray methods.
