    Notes: Summary Groups of normal rats and of normal and insulin-immunized guinea pigs were injected intravasculary with mixtures of radio-iodinated and unlabelled porcine insulins. No differences could be discerned between the fates of radio-iodinated and unlabelled insulins in normal or immune guinea pigs except with respect to the kidneys of normal animals, which seemed to accumulate TCA-precipitable radioactive substances devoid of immunoreactivity. The abnormally slow disappearance of insulin from the plasma and its persistent accumulation in the livers and spleens of immune guinea pigs were not affected by prior treatment for three days with large daily doses (ca 20 mg/kg body wt.) of hydrocortisone acetate.

    Notes: Summary Glucagon secretion and its control have been studied in perifused isolated islets of Langerhans of the rat. It was shown that a low concentration of glucose per se does not cause increased glucagon secretion, but that at low glucose concentrations the amino acid arginine stimulates a biphasic secretory response. Such amino acid stimulated glucagon secretion can be suppressed by increasing the glucose content of the perifused media from 1.67 to 5.5 or 16.7 mM; insulin secretion is also then increased. Since high concentrations of added porcine insulin (10 mU/ml) did not affect amino acid stimulated glucagon secretion at low glucose concentration, it was concluded that high concentrations of glucose and not insulin secreted in response to that glucose are probably responsible for suppression of glucagon secretion. At low concentrations of glucose, epinephrine (2.5 × 10−7 M) also stimulated glucagon secretion. It is concluded that isolated rat islets of Langerhans can be used for the study of glucagon secretion in vitro, and that substances appearing in the blood in vivo at low glucose concentrations are probably responsible for increased glucagon secretion under conditions associated with hypoglycemia.

    Notes: The tetragonal tungsten bronze ferroelectrics in the strontium barium niobate system have been extensively studied over many years. As for many of the bronzes, a crude interpretation of the experimental data has been attempted in the past using the simple Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire expansion of the Gibbs free energy as a Taylor series in powers of the polarization, lumping all the temperature dependence into the lowest order term. In this paper new measurements are presented for the temperature dependence of dielectric polarization, permittivity, and the E-field dependence of the permittivity. It is shown that for a realistic fitting of the data, the Taylor expansion must be taken to at least the eighth power term, and that the coefficients of terms up to the sixth power must be taken as functions of temperature. Since the phenomenology describes equilibrium behavior, it is the total static polarizability that is being explored in this treatment. The nature of this temperature dependence strongly suggests that the phase transition from a macropolar to a macrononpolar state is tetracritical.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports preliminary results on the fabrication of perovskite PZT and PLZT thin films using a sputtering technique. For glass, quartz and sapphire substrates, it was necessary to raise the substrate temperature above 550 ° C to achieve perovskite tetragonal structures of interest. Growth at temperatures below 550 ° C yielded a major pyrochlore structure phase. Excess of PbO in the target was also required to maintain stoichiometry in these films.

    Notes: Summary Antisera to neuropeptide Y (NPY) gave an intense immunohistochemical reaction of certain nerve cells in the myenteric and submucous plexuses of the guinea-pig small intestine. Each nerve cell had up to 20 branching, tapering processes that were less than ∼50 μm long and a long process that could be followed for a considerable distance. This morphology corresponds to that of the type-III cells of Dogiel. The long process of each myenteric cell ran through the circular muscle to the submucosa, and in most cases the process could be traced to the mucosa. The submucous nerve cell bodies also had processes that extended to the mucosa. These cell bodies, in both plexuses, also stained with antisera raised against calcitonin generelated peptide (CGRP), cholecystokinin (CCK), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and somatostatin (SOM), but did not stain with antibodies against enkephalin, substance P or vasoactive intestinal peptide. Thus, it has been possible for the first time to trace the processes of chemically specified neurons through the layers of the intestinal wall and to show by a direct method that CGRP/CCK/ChAT/NPY/ SOM myenteric and submucous nerves cells provide terminals in the mucosa.
