    Notes: Abstract A type of hysteresis, similar to that observed in the heat capacity measurements (Openshaw et al., 1979), has been found in the room temperature unit cell parameters of a microcline sample 71104 and likewise indicates the existence of two forms of this microcline. The A-form (obtained on cooling the sample to approximately 80 K) has significantly different values of b, β and V to the B-form which is the more stable form above 300±10 K. The transition from the A- to the B-form occurs over a period of months and has an associated ΔV of −0.0011 nm3. The cell parameters of the B-form have been measured up to 1278 K and show significant changes: a and V increase, b constracts, and c is unchanged on increasing temperature. The calculated thermal expansion ellipsoid is nearly uniaxial and similar in shape to that for sanidine. Below room temperature the isobaric thermal expansion coefficent αp, for a natural microcline is nearly four times as large as that for sanidine. Above room temperature αp for 71104 microcline decreases markedly with increasing temperature. This implies a rapid change in the thermal expansion behavior of microcline which has been correlated with the proposed phase transition.

    Notes: Abstract The far infrared powder absorption spectra (10–200 cm−1) for a maximum microcline sample (obtained by ion-exchange from Amelia albite) and for a natural maximum microcline were measured at steps of 10 K on lowering and raising the temperature between 300 and 110 K. Of the absorption bands at 97.5, 113.5, 137.5, 148, and 157 cm−1 occurring at room temperature, those at 157 and eventually 148 cm−1 showed evidence of a phase transition and only that at 157 cm−1 showed hysteresis. The transition occurs at 245±5 K on lowering the temperature and the low-temperature form can be superheated to 300 K in the case of the ion-exchange sample. Oriented thin sections parallel to (001) and (010) were also measured to 110 K as a function of the direction of the electric vector E, but could not be unambiguously interpreted. Though the effect is very slight it is tentatively proposed that the phase transition (already characterized by calorimetry and lattice parameters) involves changes in K-O and T-O-T bonds.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal hysteresis in heat capacity measurements recently reported (Openshaw et al., 1976) for a maximum microcline prepared from Amelia albite by fused-salt ion-exchange is described in detail. The hysteresis is characterized by two limiting and reproducible curves which differ by 1% of the measured heat capacities. The lower curve, denoted curve B, represents the values obtained before the sample had been cooled below 300 K. Measurements made immediately after cooling the sample below 250 K followed a second parallel curve, curve A, to at least 370 K. Values intermediate to the two limiting curves were also obtained. The transitions from the B to the A curve were rapid and observed to occur three times. The time required to complete the transition from the A to the B curve increased from 39 h to 102 h in the two times it was observed to occur. The hysteresis is interpreted as evidence of a phase change in microcline at 300±10 K The heat effect associated with the phase change has not been evaluated.
