Notes: The results of skin and bronchial tests and of the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) with allergen extract preparations from two different producers were compared. Eleven allergic children were tested with dog allergens and, with one exception, with birch and timothy pollen allergens. Both types of allergen extract preparation were standardized with respect to their allergenic activity. A good correlation was found between the results of the clinical diagnostic tests and the results of RAST. RAST and skin testing were equally effective as a supplement to case history for predicting the presence or absence of clinical allergy to the particular allergens. A good agreement was obtained in the results with the two different extract preparations. It was concluded that different preparations of allergen extracts may be used interchangeably in the in vivo and the in vitro systems on condition that all extract preparations have been standardized with respect to biological allcrgenic activity.

Notes: Provocation tests, skin tests, and RAST were performed in 156 asthmatic children, using eleven different allergens (moulds, animal danders, and pollens). A total of 305 positive and 676 negative provocation tests were performed. For positive provocations there was an overall agreement with RAST in 61% of the instances, for negative bronchial tests in 94%. The agreement was found to be allergen dependent. By combining RAST and skin tests, it was possible to arrive at a conclusive allergy diagnosis in a higher number of instances than if either skin testing or RAST was used alone, but in a considerable number of instances provocation tests were found to be necessary to secure the allergy diagnosis. The results obtained with RAST in this study were less favourable than those of other studies, probably because of the use of lower quality allergosorbent material.

Notes: The prevalence of asthma and exercise-induced respiratory symptoms in 153 high-level Norwegian cross-country skiers and 306 control subjects were assessed in a postal survey. The response rates were 100% for the skiers and 79% for the controls. A present or past history of asthma was reported by 14% of the skiers and 5% of the controls. The prevalence of asthma increased signhcantly with increasing age among the skiers but not among the control subjects. The majority of the controls who reported asthma dated the onset of the disease to childhood, while the skiers dated the onset of asthma primarily to late adolescence or early adult life. The skiers used anti-asthmatic medication significantly more often than did the controls. Exercise-induced respiratory symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, cough, wheezing and sputum production were re- ported by 2–3 times as many skiers as controls. Exacerbation of respiratory symptoms was frequently associated with cold weather, humid weather or with recovering from an airway infection. The results of the present study indicate that cross-country skiers may be at an increased risk for acquiring obstructive respiratory disorders.

Notes: This double-blind placebo-crossover study examined the effect of nedocromil sodium, 4 mg aerosol 30 min before challenge, on exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in cold air conditions. Twenty-one asthmatic patients (15–28 years), with methacholine PC20≤8 mg/ml in the absence of significant allergen exposure, were randomized to active and placebo therapy on separate study days. Pulmonary function, measured up to 20 min after exercise, showed significantly less deterioration with nedocromil sodium, which effectively halved the maximum percentage decline in forced expiratory volume in the first second. EIB was increased by cold air, whereas an ancillary study in 15 healthy volunteers (18–19 years) showed no such effects. We conclude that prior inhalation of nedocromil sodium diminished cold air-exacerbated EIB in young adult asthmatic patients.
