Description / Table of Contents: Summary The development of the braconidMeteorus rubens (Nees) was studied under laboratory conditions in the noctuids speciesAgrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel),A. puta (Hübner)A. segetum (Denis & Schiffermüller),Peridroma saucia (Hübner),Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) andAutographa gamma (L.). The only suitable hosts wereAgrotis ipsilon andA. puta. InA. ipsilon, this braconid parasitized and completed development in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th instars, showing a strong preference for the two later instars. The number of adult females that parasitized hosts, the percentage of parasitized larvae and the number of parasitoids which emerged per host were directly related to host age at parasitization. In host larvae parasitized at third instar, the time required for the development ofM. rubens was significantly longer than for the three later instars. However, the age of the host at parasitization did not significantly effect adult longevity.

Notes: Abstract  The aim of this study was to analyze the results of the tuberculosis contact tracing carried out in an outpatient pneumology settingand to assess its performance with regard to the detection of new cases of tuberculosis and infected contacts. One thousand two hundred and twenty-eight contacts of 302 tuberculosis patients were evaluated in the Tuberculosis Unit of the Dr. Fleming Specialities Center between 1992 and 1996. Contacts were categorized into groups with regard to bacteriological status of the index case (Group A, smear-positive; Group B, culture-positive only; Group C, smear- and culture-negative) and intimacy of exposure to the index case (close or casual). The possible association between the existence of infection or disease and the bacteriological status of the index case and degree of intimacy of exposure was analyzed. There were 582 infected contacts (47.4%) and 42 new cases of tuberculosis (3.4%), six of which were smear-positive. The proportion of infected and diseased contacts was significantly higher for those who had contact with smear-positive patients and those who had close contact with the index case. Chemoprophylaxis was completed in 431 (35.1%) of the contacts evaluated. Systematic investigation of contacts represents an efficient means of discovering new cases of tuberculosis and infection, especially among contacts of smear-positive index cases and among those who are closer to the index case. The administration of appropriate treatment to these contacts will contribute to controlling the transmission of tuberculosis within the community.

Notes: Abstract Blunt chest trauma is a frequently encountered cause of death in forensic pathology and one of the organs most likely to be affected are the lungs. Assuming that the victim survives the initial trauma, reperfusion processes take place, free radicals are formed and lipid peroxidation occurs. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether the length of the survival time is correlated with the extent of lipid peroxidation in the lung tissue following such ischaemia-reperfusion processes. A study of 470 samples taken from all five pulmonary lobes from 94 cadavers was carried out. Cases were allocated to different groups according to whether there was chest trauma and/or a known survival period. Lipid peroxidation was investigated by determining malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The lowest mean level of peroxidation was found in control cases showing no evidence of chest trauma at autopsy and no apparent survival period. Our results suggest that the level of lipid peroxidation in lung tissue can be a reliable indicator of survival processes.

Notes: Abstract In clinical practice, biochemical markers, particularly serum glucose levels are used to diagnose diabetes mellitus. However, at autopsy this marker is of no value due to the substantial and capricious fluctuations in glucose levels after death. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the postmortem determination of fructosamine in vitreous humor for confirming the presence of antemortem hyperglycemia. This was a study of 92 cadavers with a mean age of 60.05 years (SD 17.73) and a mean postmortem interval of 17.02 h (SD 9.76, range 2–58 h). Cases were assigned to two diagnostic groups according to the antemortem diagnosis of diabetes mellitus based on the patients’ medical records. In vitreous humor statistically significant differences were found in glucose and fructosamine concentrations between the two diagnostic groups, the highest values being obtained in the group of subjects with a previous diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.

Notes: Summary We have studied the sediments obtained from the pericardial fluids of 70 cadavers subject to different causes of death. The fluids were taken in the course of corresponding legal autopsies. The samples were organized according to the cause of death and cellular predominance, in the following groups, respectively: hanging, multiple trauma, craniocerebral trauma, other violent deaths, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and other natural deaths. According to cell type followed these categories: Group 1 (isolated mesothelial cells), group 2 (isolated and plated mesothelial cells), group 3 (inflammatory cells and mesothelial cells, isolated and plated), and group 4 (inflammatory cells and mesothelial cells). The statistical analysis was attained through Pearson's coefficient. We have found a significant statistical relation (P≤0.05) between the presence or lack of inflammatory cells and the mechanism of death. In those cases with a short survival period and without cardiac affectation, the presence of inflammatory cells was practically null. Furthermore, differences in the cross-sections of inflammatory cells reflected the duration of the death process, with elements characteristic of acute inflammation revealing acute cardiac process.
