Notes: Summary The basic theory of airborne EM surveying, in the time domain, is considered. Rather than resorting to tediousdouble numerical integration, a more direct approach is adopted. This method, valid in the quasi-static regime, is illustrated for a homogeneous flat earth. The results exhibit a number of clear-cut features that are relevant to remote sensing. For example, a vertical co-axial loop system has a desirable transient response from the standpoint of yielding conductivity data without requiring accurate information on the height of the device above the ground.

Notes: Abstract A male infant with pale-blue sclerae, who died at the age of 6 weeks through the aspiration of food, presented multiple fractures and deformation of the long tubular bones. The clinical and radiological findings and the course indicated osteogenesis imperfecta, type III, according to Sillence's classification. The family history was unremarkable. Light and electron microscopic studies of iliac crest bone obtained postmortem, showed an abrupt interruption of endochondral ossification, with an active periosteal ossification. In the region of the fractures, a mixed desmochondral callus was seen. The endoplasic reticulum of the osteoblasts was markedly dilated, the mitochondria were swollen. The osteoid was reduced in quantity. A postmortem analysis of the collagen types I, II and III obtained from skin, cartilage and bone yielded chromatographically normal collagen constituents. An analysis of the amino acids of the collagen α-chains showed an increased hydroxylysine content. The radiological findings and the clinical course both indicated type III osteogenesis imperfecta: identical biochemical findings have been described only for type II. The morphological and biochemical findings described here may be a manifestation of a variable expressivity of type III osteogenesis imperfecta. On the other hand, heterogeneity of type II osteogenesis imperfecta cannot be ruled out.

Notes: Summary We report on the observation of an electric-field-induced electric-dipole moment of biexcitonic molecules in a GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattice. The macroscopic oscillating electric field, associated with the microscopic wave packet dipole moments, is monitored by time-resolved transmittive electro-optic sampling. The field dependence of the biexcitonic binding energy is detected by transient four-wave mixing. From these experiments, an ultrafast non-resonant excitation mechanism of biexcitons is inferred.

Notes: We report a composite material consisting of precipitated micron-scale Ta-rich solid solution particles distributed in a bulk metallic glass matrix. The reinforcing ductile particles are precipitated during melting of the master alloy of glass-forming (Zr70Ni10Cu20)82Ta8Al10, by using previously prepared metastable Zr–Ta solid solution binary ingots. Upon cooling from the melt, the matrix undergoes a glass transition to produce an amorphous phase while the particles of precipitated Ta solid solution are distributed in the glass matrix. The resulting material not only shows high strength (∼2.1 GPa), but also has dramatically enhanced plastic strain to failure in uniaxial compression relative to single-phase bulk metallic glasses. The composite also displays limited tensile ductility. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In complete denture wearers the maximum bite force (MBF) is known to be considerably lower than in dentate people. Low MBF might therefore be an indication of poor denture fit but there is limited evidence on this. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether MBF can be improved by the replacement of complete dentures for elderly people.Nine edentulous volunteers, average age 74·2 ± 5·5 years and average denture experience 19·4 ± 19·5 years (1–50 years), had replacement dentures made. Functional impressions were taken after border moulding using zinc oxide eugenol paste. After a rehearsal session, MBF was recorded with the old dentures, and with the new dentures immediately at insertion, at 3, 8 days, 2–3 weeks, 1, 2, 3 and 6–10 months post-insertion (p.i.). The MBF was recorded with the central bearing point method using a full-bridge strain gauge with a confirmed linearity from 1 to 1000 N and an accuracy of ±1 N. Data were analysed off-line using the mean of two peak readings per patient per session. The results indicate that MBF tended to be impaired when replacement dentures were first fitted (n.s.). However, this trend reversed during the first month p.i. for patients with a ‘moderate’ lower ridge resorption of Atwood (1963) grade 3 or 4 (n=5). Patients with more severe lower ridge resorption (Atwood grade 5 or 6; n=4) showed a significantly lower MBF over the entire observation period (P=0·05) and took longer to regain bite strength. Only patients with moderate bone resorption exceeded their pre-insertion level of MBF within the observation period of 6–10 months p.i. In contrast to one report of immediate improvement of MBF at insertion of a new or relined denture (Leyka et al., 2000), the present study suggests that, at least for elderly patients with severe bone resorption, delayed improvement of MBF should be expected.

Notes: A uniform asymptotic expansion in the variable, determining the location of the observer for the fields scattered by a perfectly conducting parabolic cylinder, is derived. This expansion can be applied to scattering by arbitrary smooth convex surfaces of variable curvature. The accuracy of numerical results is examined.

Notes: Further insight into processing-structure-property relationships have been carried out for existing and candidate carbon-based protective overcoats used in the magnetic recording industry. Specifically, 5 nm thick amorphous diamond-like carbon (a:C) and nitrogenated diamond-like carbon (a:CNx) overcoats were deposited by low deposition rate sputtering onto a thin film disk consisting of either CoCrPt/CrV/NiP/AlMg or CoCrPt/CrV/glass. The wear durability and frictional behavior of these hard disks were ascertained using a recently developed depth sensing reciprocating nanoscratch test. It was determined that the CN0.14/CoCrPt/CrV/glass disk exhibited the most wear resistance, least amount of plastic deformation, and lowest kinetic friction coefficient after the last wear event. Core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results of sputter cleaned overcoats indicated that nitrogen up to 14 at. % incorporated into the amorphous network resulted in these improvements near the overcoat/magnetic layer interface, since there was an increase in the number of N-sp3 C bonded sites in a predominantly N-sp2 C bonded matrix. However, nonsputter cleaned overcoats exhibited a more graphitic pyridine-like (nondoping configuration) structure near the surface as evidenced by the increase in C(Double Bond)N versus C–N bonds and the valence band XPS determined appearance of the 2p-π band near the Fermi level (EF). Therefore, XPS sputter cleaning revealed a gradient in the chemical nature of the overcoats through the thickness. In addition, micro-Raman spectroscopy established that a further increase of nitrogen (≥18 at. %) weakened the overcoat structure due to the formation of terminated sites in the amorphous carbon network, since nitrogen failed to connect the sp2 domains within the network. This, in conjunction with an increase in the intensity of the 2p-π band from the valence band XPS spectra and the increase in the G-band position and ID/IG ratio from the Raman spectra, confirmed the increase in the size and number of sp2 bonds in the CN0.18 overcoat. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
