Notes: Summary The expression levels of nm23-H1 have been reported to correlate with the metastatic potential of some tumours. We have treated a child with a rare case of astrocytoma with diffuse osteoblastic metastases. We therefore decided to examine the expression of the nm23 gene product in 24 gliomas in order to clarify the association of its expression with the clinical features of the disease. A polyclonal antibody against a GST/nm23-H1 fusion protein was raised in rabbits. Twenty-four specimens, including 5 recurrent gliomas and one extraneural metastasis, were obtained from 19 patients treated surgically between 1990 and 1993 in our hospital. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on paraffin sections using an avidin-biotinyl peroxidase complex method. Of the 24 astrocytic neoplasms, 3 (12.5%) specimens from one patient with diffuse bony metastases stained intensely with nm23-H1. Two specimens obtained from glioblastoma multiforme patients stained weakly. The other 19 specimens were negative for nm23-H1 expression. Little or no nm23 expression was observed in adjacent nontumourous cerebral tissues. The results suggest that high levels of nm23 expression might correlate with extraneural metastatic potential in astrocytic neoplasms.

Notes: The effects of the copper content on the bendability of Al-Mg-Si alloy T4 sheets wereinvestigated. The Al-Mg-Si alloys with less than 0.01mass%Cu, 0.4mass%Cu and 0.8mass%Cu wereprepared, and the time of solution heat treatment was changed to obtain different dispersionconditions of the second phase particles and to obtain different shear band formation conditions bybending. For the samples with less than 0.01mass%Cu and 0.4mass%Cu, no cracks were observedduring the bending. For the sample with 0.8mass%Cu, the maximum depth of the crack by bendingincreased with the time of solution heat treatment up to 75 seconds, and then decreased over 75seconds. The second phase particles decreased by increasing the solution heat treatment time, whilethe formation of shear bands by bending increased by increasing the solution heat treatment time andthe copper content. The cause of the occurrence and the propagation of cracks by bending areconsidered to be the combined effect of the shear band formation across some grains and themicro-voids formed around the second phase particles. Improving of the bendability requires adecrease in the size and number of the second phase particles and/or reduced shear band formationduring the bending

Notes: Aims:  The third edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of lung tumours has been published and is expected to become the standard nomenclature. The aim of this study was to assess the usability and prognostic significance of the WHO classification in comparison with other recent classifications. Methods and results:  One hundred and forty-seven resected pulmonary adenocarcinoma cases were reviewed and histologically classified according to the WHO classification (1999) and the classification by Noguchi (1995). Papillary carcinomas as described by Silver and Askin (1997) were also identified. Since the papillary type in the WHO classification is not strictly defined, we compared the following two kinds of WHO classification: (i) WHO-N; WHO classification adopting Noguchi Type F as the definition of the papillary type, namely, pure papillary adenocarcinoma without a bronchioloalveolar component; (ii) WHO-SA; WHO classification adopting papillary carcinoma by Silver and Askin as the definition of the papillary type, namely, tumour with papillary structure constituting at least 75% of the lesion. The bronchioloalveolar carcinoma of the WHO classification showed a better prognosis than other subtypes in both overall and Stage I disease limited survival analysis. In analysis limited to Stage III disease, only the papillary type of WHO-SA showed a significantly worse prognosis. Conclusions:  WHO-SA is recommended for prognostic correlation.

Notes: Polarization switching and hysteresis are observed in a semiconductor laser with a two-armed polarization-sensitive external cavity. An intracavity polarization-dependent saturable absorber is placed asymmetrically in one of the two arms of the external cavity so that one polarization mode is saturated more strongly than the other. The observed phenomena can be explained by the complementary processes of competition in the gain region and the polarization-dependent saturable loss in the external cavity. This mechanism is potentially useful as the basis of a two-mode switchable and bistable diode laser for applications as high-speed optical memories and logic gates.

Notes: Because the confinement of carriers in a quantum well constraints the crystal momentum of the carriers near the band edge to directions close to the well normal, the selection rules for conduction to heavy-hole transitions yield a large anisotropy in the absorption cross section. We predict a new type of room-temperature polarization bistability based upon this effect in a semiconductor laser with an intracavity multiple quantum well saturable absorber. Rate equation analyses of the static device characteristics as a function of various parameters are presented, and show that two-mode bistable behavior with large hysteresis is possible over a broad range of conditions. Other modes of operation, including all-optical switching and tristable operation, have been verified by numerical calculation.

Notes: Optical pulses with repetition rates up to several hundred MHz have been generated through a polarization self-modulation effect in an external cavity semiconductor laser modified by the insertion of a quarter-wave retardation plate. These pulses are generated without the need for any high-speed electronics. At higher bias, period doubling and chaotic phenomena are also observed.

Notes: Lung carcinoma with rhabdoid cells: a clinicopathological study and survival analysis of 14 cases Aims: We determined the clinicopathological features of primary lung carcinomas with rhabdoid cells by defining the immunophenotype of rhabdoid cells and analysing survival. Methods and results: Rhabdoid cells are distinctive in having an eccentric nucleus and a large intracytoplasmic inclusion on routinely stained sections. Based on the number of rhabdoid cells, 45 cases of large cell carcinoma were divided into the following three types: lung tumour with a rhabdoid phenotype (LTRP) (n=4), lung carcinoma with a small number of rhabdoid cells (LCSR) (n=10), large cell carcinoma containing no rhabdoid cells (LCNR) (n=31). LTRP is composed of at least 10% rhabdoid cells. In LCSR the percentage of rhabdoid cells is less than 10%. LTRP and LCSR are associated with locally advanced disease. Immunohistochemical stains were positive for epithelial markers in all LTRP and eight LCSR, for neuroendocrine markers in one LTRP and three LCSR. The outcome is worse for patients with LTRP than LCSR or LCNR. LCSR shows a trend close to LCNR. Stage-matched survival analysis, however, revealed no statistically significant difference among the histological subtypes. Conclusions: Rhabdoid cells are heterogeneous except for epithelial markers and vimentin positivity. Less than 5% of rhabdoid cells has a negligible effect on prognosis.
