    Notes: Abstract Designing controllers with diagnostic capabilities is important as in a feedback control system, detection and isolation of failures is generally affected by the particular control law used. Therefore, a common approach to control and failure diagnosis problems has significant merit. Controllers capable of performing failure diagnosis have additional diagnostic outputs to detect and isolate sensor and actuator faults. A linear such controller is usually called a four-parameter controller. Neural networks have proved to be a very powerful tool in the control systems area, where they have been used in the modelling and control of dynamical systems. In this paper, a neural network model of a controller with diagnostic capabilities (CDC) is presented for the first time. This nonlinear neural controller is trained to operate as a traditional controller, while at the same time it provides reproduction of the failure occurring either at the actuator or the sensor. The cases of actuator and sensor failure are studied independently. The validity of the results is verified by extensive simulations.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, timed Petri nets are used to model and control hybrid systems. Petri nets are used instead of finite automata primarily because of the advantages they offer in dealing with concurrency and complexity issues. A brief overview of existing results on hybrid systems that are based on Petri nets is first presented. A class of timed Petri nets named programmable timed Petri nets (PTPN) is then used to model hybrid systems. Using the PTPN, the stability and supervisory control of hybrid systems are addressed and efficient algorithms are introduced. In particular, we present sufficient conditions for the uniform ultimate boundness of hybrid systems composed of multiple linear time invariant plants which are switched between using a logical rule described by a Petri net. This paper also examines the supervisory control of a hybrid system in which the continuous state is transfered to a region of the state space in a way that respects safety specifications on the plant's discrete and continuous dynamics.

    Notes: Abstract A discrete event system (DES) is a dynamical system whose evolution in time develops as the result of the occurrence of physical events at possibly irregular time intervals. Although many DES's operation is asynchronous, others have dynamics which depend on a clock or some other complex timing schedule. Here we provide a formal representation of the advancement of time for logical DES via interpretations of time. We show that the interpretations of time along with a timing structure provide a framework to study principles of the advancement of time for hierarchical DES (HDES). In particular, it is shown that for a wide class of HDES the event rate is higher for DES at the lower levels of the hierarchy than at the higher levels of the hierarchy. Relationships between event rate and event aggregation are shown. We define a measure for event aggregation and show that there exists an inverse relationship between the amount of event aggregation and the event rate at any two successive levels in a class of HDES. Next, we study how to design the timing structure to ensure that there will be a decrease in the event rate (by some constant factor) between any two levels of a wide class of HDES. It is shown that if the communications between the various DES in the HDES satisfy a certain admissibility condition then there will be a decrease in the event rate. These results for HDES constitute the main results of this paper, since they provide the first mathematical characterization of the relationship between event aggregation and event rates of the HDES and show how to design the interconnections in a HDES to achieve event rate reduction. Several examples are provided to illustrate the results.

    Notes: The production of single-cell protein (SCP) from ethanol by different imcroorganisms is briefly reviewed. The trends in modeling the SCP production are outlined with a stress on the need to incorporate metabolic and engineering considerations into the pertinent models. Data on batch yeast growth on ethanol are analyzed, a metabolic model involving design parameters is suggested, parameters values are estimated, and their significance is discussed. The model essentially describes the response of a system to disturbances (substrate, metabolites, oxygen, etc.). An effective numerical integration procedure is necessary in the solution of the model which has “stiff” character.

    Notes: Abstract An optimization algorithm for the problem of control reconfiguration in response to operating condition changes or abrupt system component failures is presented here. The algorithm utilizes a version of the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) optimization method of conjugate directions. The algorithm provides an output feedback controller that not only stabilizes the new /impaired system, when possible, but also preserves much of the dynamics of the original /unfailed system. The design is such that the closed-loop system is robust with respect to inevitable uncertainties /modelling errors on the state-space matrices of the impaired system. The algorithm is applied to an aircraft longitudinal control system, for which two severe cases of failure are considered, first the loss of an actuator and then the loss of a sensor in addition to the actuator loss.
