Notes: This article advocates a new methodology for the finite element solution of contact problems involving bodies that may undergo finite motions and deformations. The analysis is based on a decomposition of the two-body contact problem into two simultaneous sub-problems, and results naturally in geometrically unbiased discretization of the contacting surfaces. A proposed two-dimensional contact element is specifically designed to unconditionally allow for exact transmission of constant normal traction through interacting surfaces.

Notes: This paper addresses the formulation and discrete approximation of dynamic contact/impact initial-value problems. The continuous problem is presented in the context of non-linear kinematics. Standard semi-discrete time integrators are introduced and are shown to be unsuccessful in modelling the kinematic constraints imposed on the interacting bodies during persistent contact. A procedure that bypasses the aforementioned difficulty is proposed by means of a novel variational formulation. Numerical simulations are conducted and the results are reported and discussed.

Notes: This article proposes an implicit algorithm for time integration of the differential/algebraic equations of small-deformation elastoplasticity in strain space. The algorithm employs a two-step backwards differentiation formula and a standard operator-split procedure. Second-order accuracy and non-linear stability are established under appropriate constitutive restrictions. The algorithm is implemented for the model of J2-plasticity and numerical simulations are conducted that illustrate its applicability and accuracy.

Notes: A new triangular plate bending element based on the Reissner-Mindlin theory is developed through a mixed formulation emanating from the Hu-Washizu variational principle. A main feature of the formulation is the use of a linear transverse shear interpolation scheme with discrete constraint conditions on the edges. The element is shown to avoid shear locking, converge to the Kirchhoff plate theory as the plate thickness approaches zero, and generally exhibit excellent behaviour on a series of standard problems and tests.
