Notes: For a nonellipsoidal magnetic sample, the internal magnetic field Hint(r) is inhomogeneous even when a uniform external magnetic field Happ is applied to it. In such a case the elements of the demagnetizing tensor become position-dependent, N=N(r). The knowledge of the local demagnetization tensor is important for the analysis and design of devices using finite size and shape magnetic elements. The demagnetizing tensor elements can be calculated analytically and/or numerically, however, often a quick check of the extent of the inhomogeneity of the magnetization distribution of a sample, or a single approximate value of the demagnetizing factor for the given non-ellipsoidal geometry, would be satisfactory. Therefore a method to define and measure an effective demagnetizing tensor element Neff for rectangular and circular shapes has been developed. Experiments, performed on 2×4 mm2 yttrium iron garnet samples up to 220 μm thickness, show that the analytical approximation can be used to define an Neff. But even for a length/thickness ratio of 200, the thin film approximation still is in an error of 3.7%. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Small particles of Fe3O4, embedded in a Cu matrix, have been prepared both by direct milling of a mixture of Cu and Fe3O4 and by reaction milling of CuO and Fe. It is shown that the most significant changes in phase composition, magnetization, coercivity, remanence, and switching field distribution take place during the first 2 h of milling. Both processes provide small (about 25 nm) semihard magnetite particles after 1 h, with Hc up to 350 Oe and squareness of 0.3. Prolonged milling causes partial oxidation of magnetite to α-Fe2O3 and the presence of superparamagnetic magnetite particles, both reducing the magnetization of the composites. Conclusions based on magnetic measurements about the details of the technological process and microstructural changes are in very good agreement with results of x-ray diffraction measurements.

Notes: In most of the cases, a local wall energy decrease, usually associated with defects, leads to domain wall pinning. Another mechanism for coercivity is to create local maxima in the anisotropy energy. It is observed that in epitaxial garnet crystals, locally enhanced anisotropy due to stress arising from iridium inclusions embedded in the substrate is the source of coercivity. By modifying our previous energy barrier model, the coercivity has been calculated as a function of the size and position of the iridium inclusions in the substrate. It is shown that the coercivity varies nonlinearly with inclusion size and depth in the substrate material, in agreement with experimental observation.

Notes: The original Preisach model of magnetic hysteresis assumes an assembly of single domain particles, each having a rectangular hysteresis loop. The loops are characterized by up and down switching fields. The halfwidth of the loop is the coercivity Hc of the given particle. The loops might be shifted depending on the magnetic state of the environment, described by an effective interaction field, Hi. In the present work the switching properties of an artificially structured, highly uniaxial, magneto-optic garnet film (courtesy of R. Belt, AIRTRON), corresponding to the assumptions of the original Preisach model, are investigated. In this case the parameter identification is straightforward. The garnet film is etched into 42 μm rectangular pixels, separated by 15 μm grooves. Each pixel has a rectangular hysteresis loop. Up and down magnetized pixels give a black and white contrast due to Faraday effect. Magnetization can be measured by counting the number of pixels switched in a given field. The distribution of the coercive field has been obtained by measuring individual loops on each of several hundred pixels in an optical magnetometer. The average Hc=265±99 Oe, Hi=0±26 Oe. The interaction field has been measured on the same pixel, depending on the magnetization state of the nearest neighbor pixels. The contribution to Hi of oppositely magnetized pixels is dHi/dn=26 Oe/pixel. These data are compared to macroscopic hysteresis loops measured in VSM.

Notes: The equilibrium optical absorption and the near steady state photoinduced absorption measurements are performed on CaX:YIG (X=0, 0.10, 0.34) epitaxial thin films in the temperature range 10–300 K. The photoinduced effects show a broad region of induced absorption with two peaks near 2.6 and 1.9 eV and a strong photoinduced transmission (bleaching) in the region near the gap. The peaks near 2.6 and 1.9 eV are attributed to O− and Fe4+ ions, respectively. The temperature dependence of the Fe4+ peak indicates that the localization energy is about 50 K. The temperature dependence of the photoabsorption peaks indicates that the O− ion is less stable than the Fe4+ ion. The strong photoinduced transmission near the band edge is consistent with the formation of a band tail in the density of states of the highly doped Ca:YIG.

Notes: A vector moving Preisach model has been developed that describes partially oriented particulate media by pseudoparticles, consisting of a distribution of several basic particles with various orientations of easy axes. The model uses switching modes calculated by a micromagnetic simulation of physical particles. In order to test this model, the angular dependence of the magnetic properties was measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer for several samples of commercial recording media that had different degrees of particle orientation. The experimental results are in good agreement with the orientation dependence of the squareness and coercivity, as predicted by the model.

Notes: By exploiting a computerized technique based on an automatic network analyzer, the magnetic full linewidth ΔH0 has been measured in the frequency range 1–20 GHz on a series of yttrium iron garnet epilayers having thickness between 9 and 120 μm. A relevant result is that in the sample having the lowest damping, ΔH0 is almost frequency independent in the interval 2–9 GHz. The linewidth for all the three samples investigated exhibits a couple of peaks around 11.8 and 16.3 GHz, respectively. It is also shown that a moderate reducing heat treatment can decrease the linewidth up to 20%. By also utilizing the measurement of the linewidth versus the temperature, a numerical analysis of above results is attempted in terms of an intra-ionic slow relaxation model which leads to physically reasonable values for the involved parameters.

Notes: A new method is reported to measure the position and concentration of trap levels in semi-insulating materials where the regular deep level transient spectroscopy method is not applicable. In the proposed method, a transient space charge limited current (TSCLC) associated with the trap levels is measured using a capacitance balanced square wave voltage source, a voltage limiter-amplifier and a double box car averager. The TSCLC method is demonstrated on a p-type Y2.01Ca0.99Ge0.91Fe4.09O12 magnetic garnet sample ρ300=107 Ω cm. The trap level is located at 0.36 eV above the valence band edge and the concentration of the trapped holes is found to be 1013–1015 cm−3.
