    Notes: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (SM) has been considered a nosocomial pathogen. Nevertheless, community acquired infection may occur more frequently than usually recognized.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉CaseWe describe distal necrosis of the fingers by SM in a farmer, contracted in the community and successfully treated with a combination of cotrimoxazole and ciprofloxacin. The patient was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia 6 months later.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsThis unusual presentation shows that infection with SM should be included in the differential diagnosis of the skin and soft tissue infection, even in apparently healthy patients.

    Notes: Koi carp and goldfish value increases with intensity of skin colour, which is an important quality criterion. Fish cannot fully synthesize their own carotenoid colourings and these must therefore be included in their diet. Two trials were undertaken to investigate skin colour enhancement in ornamental species (i.e. three chromatic varieties of koi carp (Cyprinus carpio), namely Kawari (red), Showa (black and red) and Bekko (black and white) and goldfish (Carassius auratus)) by feeding a dietary carotenoid supplement of freshwater microalgal biomass [Chlorella vulgaris, Haematococcus pluvialis, and also the cyanobacterium Arthrospira maxima (Spirulina)], using a diet containing synthetic astaxanthin and a control diet with no colouring added for comparison. In the first trial, five homogeneous duplicate groups of 25 juvenile koi carp (C. carpio) (initial mean body weight 24.6 ± 0.7 g) were fed, for 10 weeks, one of the four diets containing 80 mg colouring/kg diet. In the second trial, this procedure was repeated for five homogeneous duplicate groups of 25 goldfish (C. auratus) (initial mean body weight of 0.9 ± 0.1 g). Initial and final samples of skin along the dorsal fin were withdrawn, from five fish per group, for subsequent analysis of total carotenoid content (spectrophotometric analysis), and red hue (colorimetric analysis, CIE (1976) L* a* b* colour system). Growth and feed efficiency were not significantly different between groups administered by the various dietary treatments. In both trials, dietary carotenoid supplementation increased total skin carotenoid content. The more efficient colouring for koi carps was found to be C. vulgaris biomass, providing both maximum total carotenoid deposition and red hue for the three chromatic koi carp varieties studied, and particularly for the kawari variety. For goldfish the best colouring obtained, as ascertained by total carotenoid content, was also achieved using C. vulgaris biomass, and red hue was maximum when using H. pluvialis biomass.

    Notes: Summary.  This report shows that the SMB vaccine currently used in Brazil for human immunisation provides different degrees of protection in mice, depending on the rabies virus strain used as challenge. Using the NIH and Habel potency tests to evaluate the protective activity of rabies vaccine, we observed that vaccinated mice showed a higher resistance to a challenge with a fixed rabies virus (CVS – Challenge Virus Strain). The vaccine potency using the Habel or NIH tests was respectively 〉 6.4 (log 10) and 1.0 (Relative Potency-RP) when the fixed rabies virus was used for challenge, and from 2.9 to 4.3 (log 10) or 0.13 to 0.8 (RP) when different wild rabies viruses were used for challenge. The presence of virus neutralising antibodies (VNA) could not explain the differences of susceptibility after vaccination, since sera of vaccinated animals had similar VNA levels against both fixed and wild strains before virus challenge (respectively, 5.6 ± 0.24 and 5.0 ± 0.25 IU/ml of VNA against the fixed rabies virus and the 566-M strain of wild rabies virus in sera of mice vaccinated with 0.2 units of vaccine). Only cell-mediated immunity parameters correlated with the protection induced by vaccination. The IFNγ titers found in sera and brain tissues of animals challenged with CVS strain were higher (from 36.7 ±  5.7 to 293.3  ±  46.2 IU/ml) than those found in mice challenged with 566-M virus strain (from 16.7 ± 5.8 to 36.7 ± 5.8). The proliferation index of spleen cells obtained with CVS stimulation reached a maximal value of 15.1 ± 0.7 while spleen cells from vaccinated mice stimulated with 566-M virus failed to proliferate. The implications of these data in human protection by vaccination are discussed.

    Notes: Summary In the present study the relationship between adrenergic nerve terminals and postjunctional α-adrenoceptors mediating the responses to the endogenous transmitter was compared at proximal and distal levels of the canine saphenous vein. Concentration-response curves to noradrenaline and to tyramine as well as frequency-response curves to electrical stimulation were compared at both levels of the vessel, in the absence and presence of either prazosin (100nmol·l−1) or yohimbine (100nmol·l−1) The influence of inhibition of neuronal uptake by cocaine (12 µmol·l−1) on the responses to noradrenaline in the presence of prazosin (56 nmol·l−1) or yohimbine (20 nmol·l−1) was compared at the proximal level. The results show that, at the proximal level, the maximal responses to electrical stimulation and tyramine reached 80.1±2.2 (n = 18) and 74.2±1.9 (n = 18)%, respectively, of the maximal responses to noradrenaline, and 70.3±0.8 (n = 15) and 53.1 ± 1.2 (n = 14) %, respectively, at the distal level. Furthermore, the proximal strips were more sensitive to electrical stimulation than the distal ones. Prazosin had a much greater inhibitory effect on the contractile responses to noradrenaline than on those to electrical stimulation, at both levels. At proximal level, the shifts (to the right) of the concentration (frequency)-response curves (at EC50) amounted to 0.58±0.02 (n = 16) and 0.18±0.02 (n = 8) log units, respectively (P〈0.05), but, at the distal level, to 1.12±0.03 (n = 16) and 0.28±0.08 (n = 8) log units, respectively (P〈 0.05). At the proximal level, yohimbine antagonizes about equally the responses to noradrenaline and the responses to electrical stimulation. However, at the distal level, the shift of the concentration-response curve to noradrenaline was much larger than that of the frequency-response curve to electrical stimulation [1.12±0.07 and 0.80±0.10 (n = 6) log units at EC50, respectively (P〈0.05)]. The leftward shift of the concentration-response curve to noradrenaline caused by cocaine was more pronounced in the presence of prazosin than in the presence of yohimbine: 0.95±0.15 and 0.69±0.12 (n = 12) log units, respectively (P〈0.05). We conclude that, in the canine saphenous vein: 1) noradrenaline released from the adrenergic nerve terminals by electrical stimulation and by tyramine preferentially activates α2-adrenoceptors at both proximal and distal levels; 2) the effectiveness of α2-adrenoceptor stimulation is greater at the proximal than at the distal level; 3) α1-adrenoceptors at the distal level seem to be different from those at the proximal one.

    Notes: In this paper an approach to the formulation of equilibrium elements for the analysis of three-dimensional elasticity problems is presented.This formulation is an extension of the approach previously proposed for the analysis of two-dimensional elasticity problems. The general aspects of the formulation remain unchanged when applied to the new problem, but new points are considered, namely the way to perform volume integrations for general elements and the techniques used to obtain the self-equilibrated three-dimensional stress approximation functions.The numerical behaviour of such elements is presented and discussed.
