    Notes: Summary Seventy-three men and women exposed to phenolic resin dust and/or processed cotton dust in a factory producing sound-deadening material were studied cross-sectionally. There was a statistically significant acute drop in FEV1 and FVC over the shift in garnett-line workers exposed to dust containing phenolic resin. Pickers, exposed to processed cotton dust only, did not show a significant drop in FEV1 and FVC over the work shift. Thirty-five percent of the workers that had smoked cigarettes and had worked in the plant 5 years or more had an FEV1 less than 80% of predicted. This finding was not entirely explained by duration of cigarette smoking. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the longer the duration of exposure, the lower the ratio of FEV1 to FVC. Respiratory symptoms were related to current cigarette smoking but not to duration of employment. The study suggests that exposure to dust containing phenolic resin had both acute and chronic effects on pulmonary function.

    Notes: Abstract Though microsatellite loci are usually found to be most polymorphic in the species in which they are first identified, we have found significant increases in polymorphisms in some cross-species applications. We present eight new trinucleotide microsatellite loci derived from two species of social wasps, Polistes annularis and Polistes bellicosus. We assessed the primers designed from these species and the degree of polymorphism in two additional species, P. dorsalis, which is very closely related to P. bellicosus, and P. dominulus, which is an Old World congener, thought to have diverged from New World Polistes over 80 million years ago. Cross-species applications for these microsatellite loci indicate that the priming sites from P. bellicosus loci are conserved in P. dorsalis and amplified similarly sized products with higher heterozygosities than the original species in two of three cases. A locus that was monomorphic in P. annularis had a heterozygosity of 1.0 in the distantly related P. dominulus. Cross-species applications of these loci indicated that alleles were generally of similar lengths in the new and original species when they retained their heterozygosity.

    Notes: Abstract The relation between the intake of certain food items thought to be precursors or inhibitors of N-nitroso compounds (NOC) and risk of leukemia was investigated in a case-control study among children from birth to age 10 years in Los Angeles County, California (United States). Cases were ascertained through a population-based tumor registry from 1980 to 1987. Controls were drawn from friends and by random-digit dialing. Interviews were obtained from 232 cases and 232 controls. Food items of principal interest were: breakfast meats (bacon, sausage, ham); luncheon meats (salami, pastrami, lunch meat, corned beef, bologna); hot dogs; oranges and organge juice; and grapefruit and grapefruit juice. We also asked about intake of apples and apple juice, regular and charcoal broiled meats, milk, coffee, and coke or cola drinks. Usual consumption frequencies were determined for both parents and the child. When the risks were adjusted for each other and other risk factors, the only persistent significant associations were for children's intake of hot dogs (odds ratio [OR]=9.5, 95 percent confidence interval [CI]=1.6–57.6 for 12 or more hot dogs per month, trendP=0.01), and fathers' intake of hot dogs (OR=11.0, CI=1.2–98.7 for highest intake category, trendP=0.01). There was no evidence that fruit intake provided protection. While these results are compatible with the experimental animal literature and the hypothesis that human NOC intake is associated with leukemia risk, given potential biases in the data, further study of this hypothesis with more focused and comprehensive epidemiologic studies is warranted.

    Notes: To investigate the association between occupational exposure to low-frequency electric and magnetic (EM) fields and risk of brain tumors, a study was performed in Los Angeles County on 272 male adults with primary intracranial gliomas or meningiomas and 272 neighborhood controls. Complete occupational histories were collected. Risk associated with employment for more than 10 years in jobs that are presumed to entail exposure to EM fields was computed for various histological groupings. A nonsignificantly elevated risk of 1.7 was found for gliomas (all types pooled: 95% confidence interval 0.7-4.4), and a nonsignificantly reduced risk of 0.3 (95% confidence interval 0.03-3.2) was found for meningiomas. For astrocytomas, which form a subtype of the gliomas, a significantly elevated risk of 10.3 (95% confidence interval 1.3-80.8) was found; a significant upward trend (P = .01) of tumor incidence with increasing length of employment was observed. Most astrocytoma patients who worked in occupations involving exposure to EM fields were electricians or electrical engineers.

    Notes: In a case-control study of adult acute and chronic myelogenous leukemia in Los Angeles County, we tested the hypothesis that excess exposure to electromagnetic fields from electric blankets was associated with risk of leukemia. We did this by studying 116 cases of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and 108 cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) along with matched neighborhood controls. The cases and controls were queried as to electric blanket use and the risks computed. For AML the risk was 0.9 (95% CI 0.5-1.6) and for CML the risk was 0.8 (95% CI 0.4-1.6). Cases did not differ from controls by duration of use, year of first regular use, year since last use, or socioeconomic status. Our best estimates of exposure indicate that electric blanket use increases overall exposure to electric fields by less than 50% and magnetic fields by less than 100%. We conclude that there is no major leukemogenic risk associated with electric blanket use in Los Angeles County.
