Notizen: A resonance method for measuring the complex elastic and electromechanical properties of piezoelectric materials under high-power operational conditions has been developed. In this method, rectangular specimens are piezoelectrically driven into mechanical resonance. The displacement of the transverse resonance mode is measured as a function of frequency (f ) using an optical vibrometer method in conjunction with a frequency response analyzer. Due to the wide amplitude sensitivity range of the detection system, asymmetries in nonlinear resonance curves with mechanical damping can be accurately measured. The method has been applied to the study of Pb(Zr1−xTix)O3. Under resonant high-power drive, it has been found that electromechanical nonlinearities are due to elastic ones, as the elastic and electromechanical properties were both found to scale with the square of the strain amplitude. The temperature (T) and ac electric field (Eac) dependence of the mechanical quality factor Qm were also determined. Iso-Qm curves were constructed that can be used to predict performance criteria for high-power applications of piezoelectric materials. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In this article, we report the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of Mn modified 0.92Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.08PbTiO3 (PZNT) single crystals. The crystals were grown by the modified-flux method. Mn substitution resulted in enhanced mechanical quality factor, Qm, and a moderate increment in the rhombohedral to tetragonal phase transition temperature with increasing Mn composition. Investigation of the role of Mn in PZNT was performed on the basis of dielectric, piezoelectric and polarization versus electric hysteresis measurements. It was found that the improved Qm is obtained because of the induction of the "hard" characteristics into the PZNT single crystal. High Qm piezocrystals are being developed for high power applications. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Polarization switching and dielectric temperature behavior have been investigated in 0.55Pb(Yb1/2Nb1/2)O3–0.45PbTiO3 (PYN–PT) single crystals. These compositions are of interest owing to their unusually high Curie temperature and high coercive fields. The dielectric permittivity was determined as function of temperature and the polarization was measured as a function of applied field for different drive frequencies. Analysis of the experimental results with a random-field model was found to show similar trends to recent reports for the Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 relaxor materials. The frequency dispersion of the maximum in dielectric spectra, Tmax, was also analyzed with the Vogel–Fulcher relation yielding a high freezing temperature of 577 K. Polarization behavior was found to follow a stretched exponential time dependence and a fractal dimension of ∼2.2 was obtained. It is proposed that the polar cluster state in PYN-PT single crystals do not freeze in random orientations but rather arrange locally in preferred configurations. The fraction of the clusters decreases under increasing external field drive, resulting in the formation of the percolated network at higher fields. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Pb(Zr,Ti)O3–Pb(Mn1/3 Nb2/3)O3 (PZT–PMnN) system has been studied for high-power piezoelectric applications. This study investigates this system to find out the composition with high-power density piezoelectric characteristics and low tem-perature coefficient of resonance frequency (TCF). It was found that the composition 0.9PZT–0.1PMnN (Zr/Ti = 0.51/0.49) modified with 6 mol% Sr exhibits a TCF of −8 ppm/°C (−20 to +80°C). Further, the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of this composition are as follows: kp= 0.53; Qm= 800; d33= 274; ε33/ε0= 1290 and tan δ=1.1%, which shows the suitability of this composition for ultrasonic devices used under fluctuating thermal environment.

Notizen: The fatigue behavior of lead zirconate titanate ceramics (PZT) has been studied under electrical and mechanical drives. Piezoelectric fatigue was studied using a mechanical method. Under ac mechanical drive, hard and soft PZTs showed an increase in the longitudinal piezoelectric constant at short times, reaching a maximum at intermediate times. Systematic investigations were performed to characterize the electrical fatigue behavior. A decrease in the magnitude of the remanent polarization was observed, which was relatively high for soft PZT. The dynamics of fatigue have been shown to scale to a hierarchical relaxation process, and this is typical of random field systems. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The aging characteristics of 〈001〉-oriented Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PZN-PT) and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) single crystals have been studied under electrical and mechanical drive. A significant increase in hysteretic loss and decrease in piezoelectric constant were observed under continuous excitation. Systematic investigations of piezoelectric aging were then performed using a novel mechanical fatigue method. Piezocrystals were placed between two magnetostrictive plates and clamped. Periodic longitudinal compressive stresses were generated by applying magnetic fields. At both short and long times, the piezoelectric constant was found to decrease slowly. However, in an intermediate range, a pronounced decrease was observed over a narrow time range. The dynamics of aging have been shown to scale to a hierarchical relaxation process, typical of disordered systems such as random field and glassy states. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Magnetoelectric laminate composites of piezoelectric/magnetostrictive materials were prepared by stacking and bonding together a PZT disk and two layers of Terfenol-D disks with different directions of magnetostriction. These composites were studied to investigate (i) dependence on the magnetostriction direction of the Terfenol-D disk and (ii) dependence on the direction of the applied ac magnetic field. Three different types of assemblies were prepared by using two types of disks: one with magnetostriction along the radial direction, the other with magnetostriction along the thickness direction. The maximum magnetoelectric voltage coefficient (dE/dH) of 5.90 V/cm·Oe was obtained for a design where the composite was made by two Terfenol-D layers with a radial magnetostriction direction.
