    Notes: The purpose of the study was to examine how specific aspects of adaptive testing influence test-takers pre-test reactions. Specifically, three different psychological reactions were examined in the study: perceived fairness of the test, attitude toward the test, and expectations about the test. Fifty-three undergraduates were presented with descriptions of hypothetical selection tests that were manipulated to reflect characteristics of adaptive tests that differ from traditional paper-and-pencil tests. The results indicate that certain features of adaptive tests, such as the inability to skip questions, may adversely impact test-takers' reactions. Implications for test designers are discussed.

    Notes: A gap in the conceptual development of the work experience construct was addressed by creating a framework specifying two dimensions along which work experience measures can vary. The dimensions of measurement mode (amount, time, and type) and level of specificity (task, job, organizational) formed nine separate categories of measures of work experience. The usefulness of the conceptual framework was tested by conducting a meta-analytic review of the existing literature on work experience using the dimensions in the framework as potential moderators of the experience-performance relationship. Results of the meta-analysis (N= 25,911; K= 44) revealed an estimated population correlation of 27 between experience and performance after correcting for sampling error and criterion unreliability. In addition, the results showed that amount (Mp̂= .43) and task-level (Mp̂= .41) measures of work experience had the highest correlations with measures of job performance. In addition, work experience had the highest correlations with hard (e.g. work samples) as opposed to soft (e.g. ratings) measures of job performance (Mp̂= .39 vs. Mp̂= .24). Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

    Notes: One factor that can affect the transfer of technical skills to the job is the extent to which the trainee is given the opportunity to perform trained tasks on the job. The opportunity to perform trained tasks was conceptualized as consisting of three dimensions: breadth, activity level, and type of tasks performed. Graduates from an Air Force technical training program and their supervisors (N= 180) responded to questionnaires measuring these three dimensions and various organizational, work context, and individual factors 4 months after the airmen had completed the training program. The results indicated that airmen obtained differential opportunities to perform trained tasks and that these differences were related to supervisory attitudes and workgroup support as well as the trainee's self-efficacy and cognitive ability. Implications for training research and practice are discussed.

    Notes: Six studies using isometric strength tests as part of their selection procedures are reported. The studies represent seven jobs across various industries with a total sample size of 1,364 individuals. The relationships between performance on four isometric strength tests and both supervisory ratings of physical performance and performance on work simulations were examined. Results of meta-analyses indicated that isometric strength tests were valid predictors of both types of criteria across all jobs examined. In addition, the four tests were found to correlate more strongly with work simulations than with supervisory ratings of physical performance. Analyses by demographic subgroups are presented. Finally, descriptive physical strength data on over 12,000 applicants across various gender, ethnic/racial, and age groups are presented.

    Notes: Two hundred fifteen organizations in the United States provided information about multiple aspects of their assessment centers, including design, usage, and their adherence to professional guidelines and research-based suggestions for the use of this method. Results reveal that centers are usually conducted for selection, promotion, and development purposes. Supervisor recommendation plays a sizable role in choosing center participants. Most often, line managers act as assessors; they typically arrive at participant ratings through a consensus process. In general, respondents indicate close adherence to recommendations for center design and assessor training. Recommendations involving other practices (e.g., informing participants, evaluating assessors, validating center results) are frequently not followed. Furthermore, methods thought to improve predictive validity of center ratings are underutilized. Variability in center practices according to industry and center purpose was revealed. We encourage practitioners to follow recommendations for center usage, and researchers to work to better understand moderators of center validity.

    Notes: The blue-light requirement for the biosynthesis of nitrite reductase and an NO2– transport system was studied in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mutant S10. The only oxidized nitrogen species that could be taken up by this mutant was NO2–, due to the presence of NO2– transport systems and the absence of high-affinity NO3– transporters. NH4+-grown cells required illumination with blue light to recover the ability to take up NO2– when resuspended in an NO2–-containing NH4+-deprived medium. This blue-light- dependent recovery, which took 1 h, could be suppressed by cycloheximide, indicating that protein biosynthesis was involved. The biosynthesis of nitrite reductase took place in cell suspensions irradiated with red light, even in the absence of NO2–, thus suggesting that the process requiring blue light was the biosynthesis of an NO2– transport system. Nitrite reductase-containing cells (pre-irradiated with red light) took 1 h to start consuming NO2– when they were additionally irradiated with blue light in the presence of this anion, and this process was also cycloheximide-sensitive. The NO2– transport system operated either under red plus blue light or red light only. Thus, in C. reinhardtii mutant S10 cells, blue light was only required for the biosynthesis of an NO2– transport system and not for its activity.

    Notes: Blue light is one of the most important environmental signals regulating monovalent anion transport in plant cells. In the unicellular freshwater chlorophyte Monoraphidium braunii, blue light is essential for the activation of HCO3−, NO3−, NO22 and Cl− transport systems. These anions are taken up when blue light is present but the uptake ceases when this radiation is suppressed, indicating that blue light is a switch signal for the monovalent anion transport system(s) of this alga. Similar results have been obtained in other green algae and higher plants. The action spectra for the uptake of NO3− and Cl− in M. braunii are very similar and resemble the absorption spectra of flavins or a combination of flavins and pterins. It is proposed that both anions share the same transport system(s). The uptake of monovalent anions consists of a cotransport with H+, thus producing alkalinization of the external medium. The time between the onset of blue light and the beginning of alkalinization can be as short as 2 s. Taken together, the results suggest that the photoreceptor mediating the blue light activation of monovalent anion uptake in this green alga is a plasma membrane-bound flavoprotein.
