Notes: Summary In the adenohypophysis of brook lampreys (Lampetra planeri Bloch) necrobiotic cellular changes are described to develop as a result of infection of the animal bodies with parasitic fungi (Saprolegniaceae). These changes are restricted only on the mesoadenohypophysis. It is suggested that a cytotoxic substance released by the fungi has a selective destructive effect on a cell type which is localized in this lobe of the pituitary gland.

Notes: Summary The octapeptide vasotocin, which is formed in the classical neurosecretory nuclei of lampreys (Petromyzonidae), is transported, bound to the carrier protein neurophysin, not only to the neurohypophysis but also to various other regions of the brain via exohypothalamic fibres. A target area of this exohypothalamic vasotocinergic system is, in the brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri Bloch), a relatively well circumscribed area in the isthmus region of the rhombencephalic tegmentum motoricum, which is called area lateralis tegmenti. In this area, which belongs to the reticular formation, the vasotocinergic fibres form synaptic contacts with nerve cell perikarya and processes. The vesicles contained in the fibres were identified, ultrahistochemically, as neurophysin vesicles. They correspond to the neurophysin vesicles observed in the neurohypophysis of the same species. The functional significance of the vasotocinergic supply to portions of the reticular formation in lampreys is open to discussion.

Notes: Summary In the torus semicircularis of the midbrain of lampreys a neurosecretory area was found. The mesencephalic neurosecretory nucleus develops not earlier than after metamorphosis and is only present in females. The neurosecretory material could be determined as a cystine-rich protein demonstrable in slices, with all of the methods, that are employed for the demonstration of hypothalamic neurosecretion. The neurosecretion is produced and stored in dilatated cisterns of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. No specialized storing vesicles in the form of the well-known spherical, uniformly electron-dense elementary vesicles or dense-core vesicles are present. The storing cisterns could also be demonstrated in the processes of the neurosecretory cells.

Description / Table of Contents: The reactions of N-carbethoxy-azepine and 2,4,6-trimethyl-N-carbethoxy-azepine with various metallic carbonyls have been studied. On reaction of N-carbethoxy-azepine with chromium hexacarbonyl benzene chromium tricarbonyl is formed through elimination of the urethan group. The analogous reaction with trimethyl-N-carbethoxy-azepine results in the formation of mesitylurethan chromium tricarbonyl.Iron pentacarbonyl, however, yielded the first stable N-carbethoxy-azepine iron tricarbonyl complexes whose alkaline hydrolysis leads to the corresponding azepine iron tricarbonyl complexes with a free N-H group. The structure of the various complexes has been confirmed by means of IR- and PMR-spectra and by total analysis.
