    Notes: The initial results of a systematic study of the effects of Nd:Pr ratio and Fe:didymium (where didymium is a mixture of Nd and Pr) ratio on the magnetic properties of nanocrystalline melt spun didymium–Fe–B alloys are presented and discussed. The stoichiometric composition, corresponding to didymium2Fe14B, with Nd:Pr ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1 and the alloy series didymiumy Fe94−yB6, with y=8, 10, 12, and 14 at % were investigated. Enhancement of remanence and energy product was observed for all compositions studied, arising from intergrain exchange coupling between the RE2Fe14B crystallites (generally having a mean diameter ∼40 nm) and, for the off-stoichiometric alloys, also between the RE2Fe14B and α-Fe grains. An excellent combination of (BH)max(185 kJ m−3) and intrinsic coercivity (810 kA/m) was observed for the (Pr0.75Nd0.25)2Fe14B alloy. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A 4 cm long Er-doped Al2O3 spiral waveguide amplifier was fabricated on a Si substrate, and integrated with wavelength division multiplexers within a total area of 15 mm2. When pumped with 9 mW 1.48 μm light from a laser diode, the amplifier shows 2.3 dB net optical gain at 1.53 μm. The gain threshold was 3 mW. The amplifier was doped with Er by ion implantation to a concentration of 2.7×1020 cm−3. The data agree well with calculations based on a model which includes the effects of cooperative upconversion and excited state absorption. For an optimized amplifier, net optical gain of 20 dB is predicted. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Three cases are reported of hypogammaglobulinemic males with recurrentCampylobacter jejuni septicemia and erysipelas-like cellulitis without diarrhoea. In one patientCampylobacter jejuni grew from skin biopsy specimens. The findings in another patient were strongly suggestive of osteomyelitis caused byCampylobacter jejuni. Since the susceptibility of hypogammaglobulinemic patients to infection withCampylobacter jejuni is probably related to a lack of serum bactericidal activity againstCampylobacter jejuni due to lack of IgM, two patients in whom previous antimicrobial treatment failed were treated with plasma infusions. This regimen supplemented with imipenem resulted in cure of these relapsing infections.Campylobacter jejuni septicemia must be considered in hypogammaglobulinemic patients who present with periodic fever and cellulitis.

    Notes: Summary Nerve regeneration through grafts of basement membrane matrix, prepared by freezing of autogenous muscle followed by thawing in distilled water, was investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats. Electrophysiological evidence of recovery in distal nerve was observed at 51 days after implantation of treated grafts whose basement membrane tubes were coaxial with the proximal and distal ends of the transected sciatic nerve. This correlated with histological findings of well-developed myelinated nerve fibres within both grafts and distal nerve. However, whereas normal axon numbers were achieved in the grafts by 3 months, the regenerating nerve in these muscle grafts took 6 months to 1 year to recover normal axon diameter and myelination. Recovery was delayed through grafts whose basement membrane tubes were at right angles to the nerve fibres and through grafts of untreated muscle coaxially aligned. It is concluded that successful repopulation of the distal stump and functional recovery can follow nerve regeneration through treated muscle autografts. The rate of regeneration is dependent on the availability of empty basement membrane tubes. If these are unavailable or inappropriately orientated, regeneration can still occur but is significantly delayed.
