    Notes: Abstract Mineralogical and geochemical factors influencing the quality of the recharge water in the London Basin aquifer system (Tertiary Sands and Cretaceous Chalk) are identified, and phase associations for Fe (pyrite, glauconite, and smectite), Mn (carbonates, gypsum, and clays) and S (gypsum, pyrite, and organic matter) established. Concentrations of these elements vary considerably on a local scale, making basinwide predictions difficult. The oxidation of pyrite is a process of major significance, controlled to a certain extent by stratigraphic factors, particularly the thickness of clay cover to the aquifer sediments that controls access of air and surface water.

    Notes: Abstract We performed experiments to elucidate the calcium influx pathways in freshly dispersed rabbit corneal epithelial cells. Three possible pathways were considered: voltage-gated Ca++ channels, Na+/Ca++ exchange, and nonvoltage-dependent Ca++-permeable channels. Whole cell inward currents carrying either Ca++ or Ba++ were not detected using voltage clamp techniques. We also used imaging technology and the Ca++-sensitive ratiometric dye fura 2 to measure changes in intracellular Ca++ concentration ([Ca]i). Bath perfusion with NaCl Ringer's solution containing the calcium channel agonist Bay-K-8644 (1 μm), or Ni++ (40 μm), a blocker of many voltage-dependent calcium channels, did not affect [Ca++]i. Membrane depolarization with a KCl Ringer's bath solution resulted in a decrease in [Ca++]i. These results are inconsistent with the presence of voltage gated Ca++ channels. Nonvoltage gated Ca++ entry, on the other hand, would be reduced by membrane depolarization and enhanced by membrane hyperpolarization. Agents which hyperpolarize via stimulation of K+ current, such as flufenamic acid, resulted in an increase in ratio intensity. The cells were found to be permeable to Mn++ and bath perfusion with 5 mm Ni++ decreased [Ca++]i suggesting that the Ca++ conductance was blocked. These results are most consistent with a nonvoltage gated Ca++ influx pathway. Finally, replacing extracellular Na+ with Li+ resulted in an increase in [Ca++]i if the cells were first Na+-loaded using the Na+ ionophore monensin and ouabain, a Na+-K+-ATPase inhibitor. These results suggest that Na+/Ca++ exchange may also regulate [Ca++] in this cell type.

    Notes: Summary Patch-clamp recording from the apical surface of the epithelium of frog lens reveals a cation-selective channel after pressure (about ±30 mm Hg) is applied to the pipette. The open state of this channel has a conductance of some 50 pS near the resting potential (−56.1±2.3 mV) when 107mm NaCl and 10 HEPES (pH 7.3) is outside the channel. The probability of the channel being open depends strongly on pressure but the current-voltage relation of the open state does not. With minimal Ca2+ (55±2 μm) outside the channel, the current-voltage relation is nonlinear even in symmetrical salt solutions, allowing more current to flow into the cell than out. The channel, in minimal Ca2+ solution, is selective among the monovalent cations in the following sequence K+〉Rb+〉Cs+〉Na+〉Li+. The conductance depends monotonically on the mole fraction of K+ when the other ion present is Li+ or Na+. The single-channel current is a saturating function of [K+] when K+ is the permeant ion, for [K+]≤214mm. When [Ca2+]=2mm, the currentvoltage relation is linearized and the channel cannot distinguish Na+ and K+.

    Notes: Abstract. Dye transfer between lens fiber cells and between lens epithelial cells and underlying fiber cells was studied using a wide dynamic range-cooled CCD camera, H2O immersion objectives and image analysis techniques. Each lens was decapsulated by a new technique which leaves the epithelial cells adherent to the lens fiber mass. Lucifer Yellow CH was injected into either single epithelial cells or single fiber cells using the standard whole cell configuration of the patch voltage clamp technique. The results demonstrate extensive dye communication between fiber cells at the lens posterior surface, anterior surface, and equatorial surface. Dye transfer between deep fiber cells was also observed. Dye transfer between ≈10% of epithelial cells and their underlying fiber cells was apparent when care was taken to yield wide dynamic range images. This was required because the relatively high concentration of dye in the epithelial cell masks the presence of much lower dye concentrations in the underlying fiber cell. A mathematical model which includes dye concentration, time, and spatial spread suggests that those epithelial cells that are coupled to an underlying fiber cell are about as well dye coupled as the epithelial cells themselves. The relatively low dye concentration in a fiber cell is due to its larger volume and diffusion of the dye along the axis of the fiber away from the fiber/epithelial junction.

    Notes: The rias of NW Spain are coastal ecosystems of high biological productivity and great economic importance. They are intensively exploited by man for fish and shellfish. There are a number of important centres of population and industrial activity along their margins, which serve as sources of contamination. In this context, it is desirable to achieve the best possible understanding of the physico-chemical processes that control spatial and temporal variations in the geochemical, mineralogical and sedimentological characteristics of near-surface sediments in the Ria de Pontevedra and, in particular, the distribution and mobility of heavy metal contaminants. Thus, adequate environmental planning can be achieved for this site and understanding gained for comparable contexts. Core samples were examined from the inner, middle and outer parts of the ria. Grain-size distributions reflect the presence of two main populations, one dominated by silt and clay, derived mainly from terrestrial sources, and the other by fine sand to coarse silt, which is derived mainly from continental shelf and ria mouth sources. Mineralogical analysis shows an abundance of terrestrial intensive-weathering products near the ria head, a dominance of shelf-derived sediment towards the mouth and the presence of several diagenetic minerals whose nature varies with location within the ria. In the inner ria, the near-surface sediments are slightly enriched in Pb, Cu and Zn from anthropogenic sources. These sediments are fine grained and have a high organic content; hence, they have a higher potential to sorb contaminants than the coarser grained, less organic-rich sediments of the mid and outer ria. The estimated sedimentation rates for the fine-grained organic-rich sediments from the inner part of the ria are about 1 mm year–1. The dominant authigenic minerals in the inner ria are iron sulphides, whereas in the mid and outer ria, iron silicates and oxyhydroxides are more important. These differences in authigenic iron mineralogy are clearly reflected by the magnetic properties of the sediments.

    Notes: The A˜ 1A‘–X˜ 1A' band systems of HCOCN and DCOCN have been studied in depth using the technique of pyrolysis jet spectroscopy. Ab initio predictions of molecular structures and vibrational frequencies for the ground and excited state were made, to assist in the assignment of the vibronic structure in the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra. A resolved emission spectrum obtained by laser population of the 81 level of the excited state was analyzed to establish the ground state vibrational frequencies. Both the LIF and resolved emission spectra are consistent with a substantial elongation of the C=O bond on excitation, and smaller changes in the other geometric parameters. The excited state inertial defect, the pattern of bands involving the antisymmetric vibrations, and the ab initio predictions all suggest that the excited state structure is only slightly nonplanar. A rotational analysis of the 910 band of the DCOCN LIF spectrum has provided the first experimental rotational constants for the ground state of formyl cyanide-d1, which should be useful in attempts to observe the microwave spectrum. The uv spectrum of formyl cyanide is found to be remarkably similar to that of propynal.
