Description / Table of Contents: The concentration dependence of the selectivity in fractionation experiments with polyethylene terephthalate has been investigated. The values obtained with 0.25% solutions showed close approximation to the SCHULZ-FLORY distribution. Lowering the concentration resulted in an essential increase of efficiency. Almost quantitative fractionation was achieved with various model blends of polyethylene terephthalate samples having different molecular weight.

Description / Table of Contents: For a four-paramter reaction-mass transfer-model of the melt polycondensation the constants of polycondensation, thermolysis and diffusion were determined by means of experiments in thin layer polycondensation. Based on these constants the convectional mass transfer or efficient melt thickness in polycondensation systems under the conditions of compelled mixing can be estimated. This way of combining micro- with macrokinetics was tested experimentally in a 10 1 reactor with anchor agitator.

Description / Table of Contents: The diffusion coefficients of 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,4-dichlorobutane in poly(alkyleneterephthalate) melts were determined with a quartz spring sorption apparatus. Dichloroalkanes show in the polyester melts similar behaviour as alkane diols. In the range of small diffusant concentrations the diffusion coefficients are independent of melt viscosity.

Notes: The ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone was investigated by means of the Mettler RC1 reaction calorimeter. In the range of small and medium monomer conversions this method can successfully be used for the determination of the course of the bulk polymerizations. The experimental results obtained by calorimetric and gravimetric method, respectively, are compared and the course of the polymerization is discussed in dependence on the reaction parameters (initiator, temperature).

Notes: The sequence distribution of liquid-crystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-oxybenzoate)s was determined by 13C NMR spectroscopical investigations of samples with different compositions. All possible oxybenzoate- and terephthalate-centered triads could be identified and assigned. The analysis of NMR substituent effects confirms the assignment. The comparison of the calculated statistical with the experimentally determined triad distribution shows a tendency for the formation of oxybenzoate blocks in the polymer chain.
