Notes: We have fabricated thin films of YBa2Cu3Ox by dc triode sputtering from two metallic targets. Post-annealing in pure O2 after sputtering resulted in superconducting films with a Tc onset as high as 89 K and a midpoint Tc of 75 K. We report preliminary results of films deposited on sapphire, MgO and sol-gel coatings of ZrO2 on sapphire, with and without buffer layers of Ag. The chemical and physical structures of these films were analyzed by using several x-ray diffraction techniques and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy.

Notes: Purpose - The aim of the study is to develop a TQM model of academic excellence and empirically establish a relationship between TQM implementation and students' satisfaction of academic performance. Design/methodology/approach - A sample of students from ISO and non-ISO engineering institutions from South India has been taken for the study. Statistical measures like mean, t-test, correlation and regression analysis were used. Findings - The results reflect that ISO 9001:2000 engineering institutions are moving towards the path of TQM offering better quality of educational service than the non-ISO institutions. A relationship between the five TQM constructs and students' satisfaction of academic performance has also been established. Research limitations/implications - This study has been conducted in higher engineering education from the students' perspective only. The study is limited to the privately funded engineering institutions. Research relating to other types of institutions namely the government institutions and the deemed universities can be taken up in future. Practical implications - The academic excellence model developed in this paper can be effectively implemented in the higher educational institutions to enhance the quality of education and students' satisfaction. Originality/value - 5C TQM excellence model is unique. Suggestions to educational authorities interested in improving the quality of education are valuable.

Notes: Abstract A new class of benzoxazine polymers were synthesised from bis(4-amino-3-hydroxymethylphenyl)methane with substituted phthalic acids by solution poly-condensation in polyphosphoric acid. The model compound bis(4H-3,1-benzoxazine)2,2′-p-phenylene was also synthesised. The polymere were characterised by UV and IR spectra, viscosity measurements and thermal analysis.

Notes: Summary A human genomic DNA fragment, pAM37 (HGM8; D21S22), was mapped to chromosome 21q2.1-q2.21 by in situ hybridization. This segment is therefore situated on the boundary of the “pathological region” of Down syndrome. A genomic restriction map encompassing 35 kb of chromosome 21 was derived and two restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) were mapped and characterized. A homologous sequence was detected in the mouse genome but no homologous RNA was detected in a range of human tissues. This DNA segment will contribute to the linkage mapping of chromosome 21 and will facilitate delineation of the pathological region of Down syndrome.

Notes: Abstract The compounding of rubber involves mixing of activator, co-activator, accelerator, antioxidant, filler, processing aid, vulcanizing agent, etc., to produce the rubber. The replacement of three of the above ingredients by rice-bran oil in the compounding of styrene butadiene rubber has been investigated. The higher fatty acids and phenols present in rice-bran oil act as co-activator and antioxidant, respectively, in the vulcanization process. Addition of this oil together with fillers, also meets the requirement of processing aid. The results obtained were compared with those obtained with reference mixes containing stearic acid, styrenated phenol and aromatic/napthenic oil in carbon-black and silica-filled systems. Evaluation of the cure characteristics of the mixes indicates that substitution of the above ingredients with rice-bran oil did not affect the cure properties. Vulcanizates containing the rice-bran oil also showed physical properties comparable to the reference mixes. Processability studies using a plasticorder also showed similar trends. Considering the fact that rice-bran oil is cheaper than other conventional oils used as processing aids in rubber compounding, this non-toxic natural oil can be advantageously used in rubber product manufacture.

Notes: Poly(dimethylxylylenylamides) were synthesized from six different diphenylenediamenes and two dimethyl-substituted xylylenyldiacid chlorides by solution polycondensation at low temperature. The model compound 2,5-demethyl1,4-benzediacetanilide was synthesized and characterized by infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The polyamides were characterized by IR and viscosity measurements. Some of the polyamides showed crystalline behavior in the x-ray diffractograms. The polyamdes have decomposition temperatures in the range 370-310°C in air and are soluble in all amide solvents. The effects of subsituents on crystallinity, thermal stability, and solubility of the polymides are also discussed.

Notes: Analysis of the 1H NMR spectra of several monothiocarbonohydrazones, some of them synthesized for the first time, shows that they exist as two structural isomers. Whereas, in general, the derivatives of aromatic aldehydes conform to a linear structure, the aliphatic carbonyl derivatives conform to heterocyclic or linear structures, depending on the size of the substituent groups. This dual behaviour is explained in terms of extended conjugation and steric hindrance.

Notes: Monopropiophenone thiocarbonohydrazone has been isolated in both linear and cyclic isomeric forms. Each form has been shown to isomerize and exist in equilibrium with the other in DMSO-d6 solution by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The kinetics of this transformation show attainment of equilibrium in approximately 6 h, with a linear to cyclic configuration ratio of 40:60.
