Notes: To investigate the mechanisms of action underlying the therapeutic effect of CD4 monoclonal antibody therapy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), clinical responses were compared with several laboratory parameters. Twenty-nine RA patients received either 10 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg of cM-T412, a chimeric CD4 MoAb, for 7 days. The CD4 binding sites on circulating lymphocytes were saturated directly with cM-T412 and serum levels of unbound cM-T412 accumulated towards day 7 of treatment only in the patients treated with 50 and 100 mg. The treatment induced an instant and prolonged depression of the number of circulating CD4+ cells, similar for all dosages. Clinical improvement was observed predominantly in the patients treated with 50 or 100mgcM-T412daily and did not correlate with changes in counts of circulating leucocyte subsets nor with changes in serum cytokine levels. An antiglobulin response against cM-T412 developed in a majority of the patients. Side effects on the first day of treatment were correlated with an increase of serum IL-6 levels. This study indicates that a favourable clinical effect of cM-T412 administration was associated with the presence of unbound cM-T412 in the circulation of RA patients. Therefore penetration of unbound cM-T412 into the site of inflammation might determine the therapeutic effect in RA.

Notes: Summary A single-vial extraction radiometric assay was used to measure acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase in human post-mortem brain tissue. Data are presented regarding the differential inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase in several brain areas from a case of Alzheimer's disease and a case without neuropsychiatrie disease. The results indicate that neither enzyme is entirely specific for its substrate, and the necessity for using inhibitors depends upon the ratio of acetylcholinesterase to butyrylcholinesterase in a particular sample.

Notes: Summary For medico-legal purposes, usually as an aid in establishing the time of death, it is considered essential for forensic pathologists to have detailed entomological knowledge regarding the recognition and classification of several types of flies and their maggots, including the families of Calliphoridae, Muscidae and Sarcophagidae. We try to deal with the description of external and internal morphology of cyclorrhaphous maggots, the biology and lifecycles of blowflies, houseflies and fleshflies.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Morphologie des Kieferapparates und des 12.
Notes: Summary The morphology of the cephalopharyngealsklerite, the 12th segment of the maggot and the anterior respiratory openings together provide useful recognition features to distinguish the maggots of forensically important blow-fly species. The significant characters of the maggots are finally collected in a classification key.

Notes: Summary Histological and cytological examinations of 188 autopsies-113 smokers and 75 non-smokers-established that cigarette smoke causes increase and multiplication of alveolar macrophages which contain inclusions of ceroid-like pigment. Acute death by fire, delayed asphyxia and putrefaction have no influence on the formation of these sudanophilic inclusions. The pigment is resistant to decomposition and lipid-solvents. It is possible to identify cigarette-smokers-even months after burial—by means of paraffin sections of lung tissue and proceeding with fat—staining methods.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Morphologie des Kieferapparates sowie des 12.
Notes: Summary The cephalopharyngealsclerite and the morphology of the 12th puparian segment provide useful recognition features to distinguish the puparia of forensically important blow-fly species. In addition it was found that the size of the puparia can only make restricted reference to the identification of the species. The most useful characters of the puparia are finally collected in a classification key.
