    Notes: The carbonate aquifer of the Pinchinade graben, which has a well-delimited geometry, involves water with well-defined chemical types from calcium sulfate to magnesium bicarbonate. Each ground water type corresponds to a well-delimited area of the aquifer: the magnesium bicarbonate for the Liassic and Rhetian limestone water (with 10 to 30 mg L-1 of sulfate) and calcium sulfate for the water of the relatively impermeable layer of the underlying Keuper (with 300 to 1500 mg L−1 of sulfate). A four-year pumping test with a bimonthly to daily monitoring of water chemistry has allowed evaluation of the renewal of the exploitable water reserve. During the four-year period, the survey shows that the average discharge is balanced by natural recharge (2.8 to 105 m3 y−1). A change in the chemical character of the water was observed from Rhetian to Keuper type (from 35 to 167 mg L−1 of sulfate). Such a change indicates a progressive exhaustion of the Rhetian reserves, which are the greater part of the exploitable reserve in the area. The same phenomenon is observed daily depending on the pumped discharge and the season. For pumping rates below 26 m3 h−1, the borehole drains the Rehetian inflows to a degree depending on high or low water levels. For pumping rates above 26 m3 h−1, whatever the period, the permeable Keuper layers are pumped and sulfate peaks ensue.

    Notes: Objectives: The presence of yeasts in periodontal pockets has been described in a few studies. The association between yeasts and putative periodontal pathogens is not well described. This study aims at assessing the prevalence of yeasts in periodontal pockets and possible associations with the clinical conditions of the sampled sites and other micro-organisms present.Material and methods: 2 subject groups form the basis for this study. The 1st comprises results from microbiological samples from periodontal pockets of 128 subjects. The 2nd originates from 126 periodontal patients with untreated pockets. Microbiological identification was performed after cultivation on blood and Sabouraud agar plates, and “checkerboard” DNA-DNA hybridisation.Results: The prevalence of subjects with yeasts in the pockets was 15.6% and 17.5% in the 2 groups respectively and was inconsistent according to gender. No correlation was found between age and the presence of yeasts. Eubacterium saburreum was weakly correlated with presence of yeasts (r=0.194 p=0.03). Yeasts were rarely found in both samples from the same individual.Conclusions: Our results indicate that yeasts can be expected to be present in periodontal pockets in one out of 6 periodontal patients independent of gender and age. Eubacterium saburreum seems to occur frequently together with yeasts.

    Notes: Escherichia coli strains showing an increased resistance to oxyiminocephalosporins without an extended spectrum β-lactamase production have been screened for mutations in their ampCβ-lactamase gene promoter. Mutations were found by direct sequencing of seven promoters at positions −42, −32 (box −35), −18, −1, +5, +24 (attenuator), +31 (attenuator) and +58. By using rapid and simple methods, three of these mutations (−42, −32 and +24), which could enhance transcription, were searched in 37 resistant and 25 sensitive isolates. The −42 mutation was present in 33 of the 37 promoters from the resistant isolates. The −32 and +24 mutations were present only in three and two promoters, respectively, and they were combined in the most resistant strain of the study. The +24 mutation was detected in another strain associated with a 1-bp insertion between the −35 and −10 conserved sequences. None of these mutations was detected in the ampCβ-lactamase from the sensitive isolates.

    Notes: Background Propionibacterium acnes is the target of antimicrobial treatments for acne vulgaris. Acquired resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin and tetracyclines has been reported in strains from diverse geographical loci, but the molecular basis of resistance, via mutations in genes encoding 23S and 16S rRNA, respectively, has so far only been elucidated for isolates from the U.K. Objectives To determine whether similar or different resistance mechanisms occur in resistant P. acnes isolates from outside the U.K. Methods The phenotypes and genotypes of 73 antibiotic-resistant strains of P. acnes obtained from the skin of acne patients in the U.K., U.S.A., France, Germany, Australia and Japan were compared. Antibiotic susceptibilities were determined by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) measurements, and polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing were used to identify mutations in genes encoding rRNA. Results Most erythromycin-resistant isolates (MIC90≥ 512 μg mL−1) were cross-resistant to clindamycin but at a much lower level (MIC90≥ 64 μg mL−1). As in the U.K., resistance to erythromycin was associated with point mutations in 23S rRNA in 49 of 58 strains. An A→G transition at Escherichia coli equivalent base 2058 was present in 24 strains. This gave a unique cross-resistance phenotype against a panel of macrolide, lincosamide and type B streptogramin antibiotics. Two further point mutations (at E. coli equivalent bases 2057 and 2059) were identified (in three and 22 isolates, respectively) and these were also associated with specific cross-resistance patterns originally identified in isolates from the U.K. However, nine of 10 erythromycin resistant-strains from Germany did not exhibit any of the three base mutations identified and, in six cases, cross-resistance patterns were atypical. Consistent with previous U.K. data, 34 of 38 tetracycline-resistant strains carried a base mutation at E. coli 16S rRNA equivalent base 1058. Tetracycline-resistant isolates displayed varying degrees of cross-resistance to doxycycline and minocycline, but isolates from the U.S.A. had higher MICs for minocycline (4–16 μg mL−1) than isolates from other countries and, in particular, Australia. All the P. acnes isolates resistant to one or more of the commonly used antiacne antibiotics were sensitive to penicillin, fusidic acid, chloramphenicol and the fluoroquinolone, nadifloxacin. All but one isolate (from the U.K.) were sensitive to trimethoprim. Conclusions This study shows that 23S and 16S mutations identified in the U.K. conferring antibiotic resistance in P. acnes are distributed widely. However, resistant strains were isolated in which mutations could not be identified, suggesting that as yet uncharacterized resistance mechanisms have evolved. This is the first report of high-level resistance to minocycline and is of concern as these strains are predicted to be clinically resistant and are unlikely to remain confined to the U.S.A. Epidemiological studies are urgently required to monitor how resistant strains are selected, how they spread and to ascertain whether the prevalence of resistance correlates with antibiotic usage patterns in the different countries.

Alle Arten der GattungListeria zeigen das gleiche Empfindlichkeitsverhalten wieL. monocytogenes, mit der Ausnahme, daß Fosfomycin nur gegenListeria ivanovii wirkt, nicht aber gegen die anderen Arten. Antibiotikakombinationen zeigen oft eine bakterizide Wirkung, z. B. die meistens verwendete Kombination von Ampicillin und Aminoglykosiden. Eine Zunahme der Resistenz von Listerien konnte bislang noch nicht beobachtet werden.
    Notes: Summary AlthoughListeria is a rather susceptible bacterium, most antibiotics exert a bacteriostatic effect onListeria monocytogenes. Except for fosfomycin, antibiotic susceptibilities are similar among the species of the genusListeria. In vitro, bactericidal effect is often achieved by the use of antibiotic combinations. The most commonly used combinations are ampicillin with aminoglycosides. Up until now, there has been no trend towards reduced susceptibility ofListeria to antibiotics.

    Notes: Abstract  Rahnella aquatilis was isolated from the blood cultures of two patients who were in different units of the same hospital. Both isolates were susceptible to aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, cotrimoxazole, piperacillin, third generation cephalosporins and amoxicillin-clavulanate, but resistant to amoxicillin, ticarcillin, and first generation cephalosporins. The synergistic activity of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid suggested the presence of a β-lactamase, confirmed by a positive nitrocefin test and by analytical isoelectric focusing. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and ribotyping with the pKK3535 probe showed that the isolates shared the same banding pattern. The results of an epidemiological study suggested that an in-house total parenteral nutrition solution might be the source of this unusual gram-negative rod.
