    Notes: Abstract We describe clinical, morphological and biochemical findings of a patient with reducing body myopathy (RBM). This 15-year-old patient was affected by severe limb-girdle progressive myopathy with asymmetric distribution. Muscle biopsy showed many fibers with cytoplasmic polymorphic masses, which stained dark purple with modified Gomori's trichrome, associated with proliferation of cytoplasmic bodies. Cytoplasmic polymorphic masses showed marked reducing activity with menadione-nitro blue tetrazolium reaction. Ultrastructurally, there was great amount of highly electron-dense tubular-filamentous structures of 16–17 nm in diameter. Immunohistochemistry showed that many fibers were positive for desmin. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-electrophoresis disclosed an increase in two bands of approximately 53 and 70 kDa, and Western blot demonstrated that the 53-kDa band was desmin. It was not possible to characterize the 70-kDa protein further.

    Notes: Summary The clinical, morphological and biochemical findings of a sporadic case, showing accumulation of desmin-type intermediate filaments in skeletal muscle and myocardium are described. Desmin storage was demonstrated by immunofluorescence, sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. These findings are in agreement with those of Rappaport et al. (FEBS Lett. 231:421–425, 1989). A sensory-motor polyneuropathy was established by electrophysiological studies and, ultrastructurally, intramuscular nerves showed accumulation of neurofilaments and neurotubules with formation of axonal spheroids. These findings are discussed considering all previous reports with related conditions.

    Notes: Abstract We studied prospectively 105 unselected patients complaining of ptosis and/or diplopia due to extrinsic ophthalmic muscle palsies without other neurological signs. All patients underwent the same diagnostic protocol. The presenting symptoms were: ptosis, 35 patients (33%); diplopia, 27 patients (26%); ptosis and diplopia, 43 patients (41%). The oculomotor nerve was most frequently involved, followed by the abducens nerve. The final diagnoses were: ocular myasthenia, intracranial and/or orbital pathology, thyroid ophthalmopathy, diabetic ophthalmoplegia, mitochondrial myopathy, oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy. In 26 patients (25%) the cause remained undetermined. Our study confirms the difficulty of establishing an aetiological diagnosis in patients with isolated ocular palsies.

    Notes: Abstract A girl affected by a restrictive cardiomyopathy with neuromuscular involvement is described. Morphological examination showed a pattern of multicore myopathy and with electron microscopy a sarcoplasmic accumulation of electron dense granular and filamentous material was demonstrated both in skeletal muscle and heart. This peculiar electron dense material corresponded to increased desmin in muscle and cardiac fibres and was demonstrated immunohistochemically.

    Notes: The wetting phenomena and adhesion between Ag-Cu-Zr molten alloys (where Zr is an active brazing element) and ZrB2-ceramic substrate have been investigated from theoretical and experimental point of view. The wetting phenomena of molten alloy/ceramic substrate depend on the bonding characteristics of liquid alloys and ceramics as well as the magnitude of interactive forces at the interface. Accordingly, the first step of this investigation is to determine the surface properties of Ag-Cu, Ag-Zr and Cu-Zr liquid alloys. The energetics of the bulk and the surface ofliquid alloys have been analysed in the framework of statistical mechanical theory in conjunction with Quasi-Lattice Theory (QLT), through the study of the concentration dependence of various properties such as surface tension, surface composition, concentration fluctuations in the long wavelength limit and Warren-Cowley chemical short-range order parameter. Combining the Young and the Dupré equations, the obtained values of surface tension together with contact angle datahave been used to calculate the work of adhesion

    Notes: Summary Auger measurements of the surface composition have been performed on solid and molten Pb-5at%Sn alloys. They confirm the theoretical predictions that, in the absence of oxygen, liquid or solid alloys exhibit no significant surface segregation. On the contrary, surface composition measurements and simultaneous surface tension measurements clearly show that oxygen adsorption strongly affects the segregation of tin at the liquid-vapour interface. This surface enrichment is driven by the contribution of the reaction free energy and of the products surface tension.

    Notes: Summary Using the monolayer model, a thermodynamic approach is suggested in order to compare the surface reactivity to the volume reactivity under both equilibrium and nonequilibrium conditions (sorption and chemical processes). Capillary parameters, such as surface tension and surface dilation, have a direct influence on the efficiency of chemical reactions and on their stability.
