Notes: Abstract Epitaxial crystallization of poly(tetramethylene terephthalate) from dimethyl phthalate solution on alkali halide crystals has been studied using electron microscopy and electron diffraction techniques. Rod-like crystals oriented in the 〈110〉 directions of the substrate were found to form at short crystallization times. At longer times, however, lamella-like crystals, which were nucleated at the sides of the rod-like crystals, grew in directions dictated by the substrate. Besides the normal bidirectional orientations induced by the substrate, the polymer crystals showed twinning which was found to be due to the triclinic lattice structure of the polymer.

Notes: Abstract A new technique for esterification of an acid monolayer at the gas-water interface has been introduced. This novel process termed phase controlled surface reaction (PCSR), utilizes Gibbs' surface energies to ensure reaction in an environment that would normally inhibit it. Because surface energies are important in numerous environments, PCSR should work with many condensation reactions. The addition of a benzyl alcohol subphase to water leads to a concentration of excess benzyl alcohol at all water interfaces including the gas-water interface. This surface enriched benzyl alcohol zone reacts with a polymerized monolayer present at the gas-water interface. FT-IR characterization of the deposited reacted monolayer shows that up to 70% of the monolayer molecules have been reacted. Further experiments indicate that the degree of conversion is dependent on the pH of the water subphase. Preliminary studies of electron lithographic patterning of the deposited product indicates that it is more electron sensitive than the original monolayer. PCSR may thus be a method by which chemical changes can be made in an existing monolayer, without altering its structure.

Notes: Poly(bismethylene hydroquinone) (PBHQ) has been synthesized. Fourier transform infrared, 13C solid-state CP/MAS NMR and elemental analysis provide strong evidence of two methylene bridges per hydroquinone molecule. The polymer was (1) air oxidized using ammonia and (2) chemically oxidized using bromine/KOH. The initial structure and oxidation process was studied by comparison of the unoxidized and oxidized polymers using Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis, and 13C solid-state CP/MAS NMR.

Notes: We have been investigating the crystallization behavior of the phospholipid amphiphile, 1,2 bis (10, 12-tricosadiynol)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, DC8,9PC, which forms both vesicles and hollow tubules as well as Langmuir Blodgett monolayers and multilayers. This material has polymerizable diacetylene groups in equivalent positions on the two hydrocarbon tails. The direct crystallization from solution of this amphiphile has been studied using different solvent mixtures and temperatures. The Langmuir Blodgett technique was also used to compress and orient the tubules.

Notes: A series of low-molecular-weight linear polyesters were epitaxially crystallized from dilute solution and the melt on a variety of organic and inorganic substrates. The rod-like polyester crystals which were formed assumed general orientations in alignment with substrate geometry. This yielded monodirectional orientation of these crystals on one of the organic substrates, and bidirectional orientation on the other surfaces. Heterogeneous nucleation on the organic substrates, trioxane and naphthalene, induced the growth of much larger epitaxial crystals than have previously been observed on inorganic substrates. Those polyesters, with a high percentage of methylene units per chain repeat, crystallized in an unusual polymorphic form when in contact with the organic substrates. Polymorphic transformation to the normal form was not possible under thermal treatment or with increased crystal thickness. The expected relationship between dipolar alignment in the polymer crystal and this polymorphism was established.
