Notes: Abstract The gametogenesis and gonad microanatomy of the stalked barnacle Pollicipes cornucopia (Leach) is described. An histological classification of gametogenic development is proposed for the firt time for a species of the Cirripedia. This species has an annual gametogenic cycle on the north-west Spanish coast. Spawning takes place mainly from March to September. Ovaries release gametes at least twice during the gametogenic cycle.

Notes: Abstract In this work, the citric acid production in solid state culture was performed, evaluating the isolated effect and interactions of particle size and liquid phase employed, by means of the factorial design of first order. The results indicate that the particle size is the most determinant variable. An analysis comparing submerged and solid state in optimal conditions was performed. When solid state culture was used, the productivity of citric acid was doubled, reducing the fermentation time from 14 to 6 days, compared to the submerged culture, obtaining a maximum citric acid concentration of 21.24 g/l.

Notes: Abstract To better understand the intra-uterine bone modelling and remodelling process in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) newborn infants, long bone growth was studied using postmortem X-ray films in a group of such infants (n=34). Bone length, diaphyseal diameter, medullary diameter, cortical thickness, cortical area, the Barnett-Nordin index, and the percentage of cortical area were determined in femur, tibia, and humerus. A separate group of appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) newborn infants (n=146) was used as controls. Length and cortical bone mass in all three bones were significantly lower in SGA infants than in AGA infants. Decreased cortical bone mass in SGA infants was the result of decreased diaphyseal diameters and increased medullary diameters. Similar results were obtained when SGA infants were subclassified as preterm and term and compared with the control group of AGA infants. Bone lengths and diaphyseal diameters in SGA infants did not differ from those observed in a weight-matched control group of AGA infants although the latter were younger by 4 week's gestation. However, the cortical bone mass was lower than in the control group because of the relative greater medullary diameters in all three long bones in the SGA infants. Our present results indicate that reduced cortical bone mass in SGA infants is a mixed growth modelling and remodelling dependent process.

Notes: Summary This paper presents a study of the magnetospectroscopy of acceptors in elemental group-IV semiconductors in the presence of uniaxial stress. We use a formulation of the effect of stress on the transition probabilities for optical absorption which represents a considerable simplification over previous treatments. We give an analysis of both the longitudinal and the transverse magneto-spectroscopy of acceptors in semiconductors having the diamond structure under uniaxial stress. The results are used to determine the values of theg-factors for two levels of Ga acceptors in Ge by comparing the present results with the experimental data.

Notes: Summary This paper gives a discussion of a proposed mechanism for the conversion of an ionic transition, forbidden in free Mn2+, to allowed in a zinc-blende crystal by virtue of a modulation of the crystal potential by dynamic polarization of the anions of the crystal. We prove that this proposed mechanism is not effective in this context.

Notes: Biogenic amines and polyamines were measured in unripened cheese and 4 types of ripened cheese. The study included cheeses produced from both pasteurized and raw milks. All amines were lower in unripened than in ripened cheeses. The amine contents varied among different types of ripened cheese, within the same type of cheese, and also within the parts of cheeses. The main amines in ripened cheeses were tyramine, cadaverine, and putrescine. The highest concentration of tyramine was found in hard-ripened raw-milk cheeses, while blue cheese had the highest level of cadaverine. Unripened cheeses could be considered as well-tolerated products for histamine- and tyramine-sensitive individuals, whereas the wide variability in biogenic amines makes it difficult to generalize this consideration for all ripened cheeses.

Notes: A 12 kDa protease/α-amylase inhibitor was purified from maize seeds and studied. Its trypsin- and amylase-inhibitor activities against enzymes from different origins were determined, as well as its optimal pH for inhibition. Eight different proteases, extracted from insects and fungi which attack grains during storage, were tested with the inhibitor. Bovine trypsin and trypsin-like proteases from the insect P. truncatus, and the fungi A. niger and A. fumigatus, were recognized by this inhibitor. Out of 11 α-amylases tested, only those from T. castaneum and C. maculatus were recognized by this inhibitor. The optimal pH's for the inhibition of trypsin and the trypsin-like protease from P. truncatus were 8.0 and 7.5, respectively. The optimal pH activity was 5.0 for the inhibition of amylases from T. castaneum and C. maculatus.

Notes: : The formation of biogenic amines in goat cheese can be prevented through ensuring hygiene in raw materials and during manufacture, thereby avoiding potential decarboxylating microorganisms. High-pressure treatment may be used to inactivate microorganisms and is a potential alternative to pasteurization. This treatment could provoke higher proteolysis than pasteurization, leading to a higher availability of biogenic amine precursors. We compared the biogenic amine profile throughout the ripening of goat cheese made from pressurized milk with that obtained from pasteurized milk. Results indicate that the profile of biogenic amines is very similar for both cheeses. Tyramine was the prevailing amine in both cheeses, followed by cadaverine, putrescine, and histamine.
