Notes: Abstract A two-dimensional model is developed to describe the hydrodynamics, heat transfer and adsorption phenomena associated with the adsorptive storage of natural gas (NG) in cylindrical reservoirs. Intraparticle and film resistances to both heat and mass transfer are neglected. In the momentum equation, Ergun's law is considered locally valid and is extended to two dimensions. These assumptions are fully justified in the paper. Numerical results are presented concerning the pressurization and blowdown of an ultra-lightweight 50 litre cylinder, commercially available for the storage of compressed NG, if it were filled with an activated carbon having a good adsorptive storage capacity. A simple formula is also proposed to predict the filling times for fast charges. The predicted temperature changes in the packed-bed are in good agreement with those reported in the literature for an experimental charge/discharge.

Notes: Abstract The charge of natural gas adsorption storage systems is studied numerically, With emphasis given to the impact on its dynamics of intraparticle diffusional resistances to mass transport. Besides adsorption kinetics and thermal effects, the simulation model takes into account both mass transport inside the adsorbent and hydrodynamics of flow through the packed bed. Numerical results are presented for change with methane of a 50 liter cylindrical reservoir, filled with hypothetical adsorbents with diffusional time constants in the range 10−3 s1 D/R p 2 ≤ ∞. and with the adsorption equilibrium curve of a commercially available activated carbon with a good adsorptive storage capacity. An attempt is made to assemble the charge histories for different values ofD/R p 2 , in a single cure by using a modilied time scale.

Notes: A new process for purification of phenolic wastewaters by parametric pumping is presented. An equilibrium (linear) model for nonmixed dead volumes thermal direct mode parametric pumping is developed and the influence of bottom and top dead volume magnitudes on transient separation is analyzed.Analytical solutions for batch, continuous and semicontinuous operations are presented.Experimental data on the system phenol/water-Duolite ES861 include equilibrium isotherms at 20°C and 60°C and parapump runs for the cases mentioned above.

Notes: Dynamic analysis of single-pellet cell for the measurement of diffusion and convection in porous catalysts is revisited. A complete mathematical model for the “diffusion-convection” cell is solved, and the relation between zero-and first-order moments of the cell response and operating parameters is derived. The validity region of the “simplified” boundary condition at the bottom of the pellet is quantified. The effect of the operating parameters on the cell time response to a tracer impulse is analyzed to check the practical range of operation of the system. It also is compared with the chromatographic technique.

Notes: Pressurization and blowdown steps in pressure swing adsorption (PSA) with binary mixtures of inert and adsorbable species are studied. Modeling involves mass balances for the bulk fluid phase and inside particles, that is, intraparticle diffusion/convection models, momentum balance equations, and linear adsorption equilibrium isotherm. The importance of intraparticle convection in PSA is assessed. Mass transfer inside pores is enhanced by intraparticle convection, which leads to a better efficiency of adsorption (pressurization) and desorption (blowdown) processes. Performance is improved by intraparticle convection and lies between diffusion and equilibrium limits, as shown in propagation profiles of the adsorbable species mole fraction in the bed and inside particles.

Notes: Separation of a binary mixture by a three-step one-column pressure swing adsorption process in isothermal and adiabatic cases has been studied. The separation performance of the process is characterized by three parameters: enrichment, recovery and productivity. It has been compared at various operating conditions. The evolution of the bed performance from cycle to cycle and the bed dynamics at cyclic steady state have also been addressed.

Notes: Intraparticle forced convection was considered in order to explain experimentally observed changes in effective diffusivity (apparent) with flowrate, when measures are carried out in fixed beds.A complete model taking into account intraparticle diffusion and forced convection together with film diffusion is derived in order to analyze diffusivity measurements by physical methods, both in perfectly mixed reactors and fixed beds. The experiments were carried out with hydrogen tracer in a partial oxydation catalyst.Implications of the use of such “apparent” effective diffusivities in reactor design are discussed, showing that errors of 100% can be made.

Notes: A three-step (feed, delay, and purge), one-column pressure swing adsorption reactor has been analyzed. An equilibrium model taking into account species mass balances, overall mass balance, momentum balance, reaction rate, and nonlinear multicomponent adsorption equilibrium isotherms was derived to describe the PSA reactor process. Numerical solution of model equations was obtained by using the method of orthogonal collocation on finite elements, and simulation results showed that 10-20% higher conversion than reaction equilibrium conversion in a fixed-bed reactor could be obtained from the PSA reactor for a reversible reaction A ⇄ B + C, such as dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene and hydrogen on cadmium-exchanged zeolites, where only product B was assumed to be adsorbed. When both reactant A and product B are adsorbed, 10% higher conversion over the reaction equilibrium limit was observed for pure reactant feed. The effects of system and operating parameters on the process performance of the PSA reactor have been studies, as well as the bed dynamics of the PSA reactor at the cyclic steady state.
