Notes: Abstract  In previous articles we have reported the ’’disappearance’’ of Harderian gland mast cells (HGMC) after treatment with testosterone. In the present work we study: (a) if the apparent decrease in the number of mast cells caused by this androgen is real or is due to the fact that testosterone induces mast cell degranulation that avoids its recognition by toluidine blue staining; (b) if testosterone acts through its receptor directly on the Harderian gland (HG). In order to give an answer to the first question, we observed HG of female Syrian hamsters treated with testosterone under the electron microscope to find the possible degranulated mast cells not recognizable with the aid of the toluidine blue staining. We also studied in vivo and in vitro the effects of the β-agonists isoproterenol and salbutamol, given that they increase cAMP and can therefore prevent degranulation of mast cells. Finally we have used cytocalasin B, which inhibits degranulation by blocking actin depolimerization. Both the β-agonists and cytochalasin B were able to prevent the decrease of mast cells, as recognized by staining with toluidine blue after treatment with testosterone. Indeed, when observed under the electron microscope, abundant degranulated mast cells were found after treatment with testosterone. For solving the second issue we analyzed the effect of the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate in vivo and in vitro. Our results demonstrate that testosterone is able to induce degranulation of HGMC in the Syrian hamster Mesocricetus auratus and that this effect is achieved directly through its receptor on the Harderian gland.

Notes: Abstract Emerald deposits of Colombia are confined to lower Cretaceous shales of the Eastern Cordillera. The tectonic pattern of the deposits is related to deep reverse and large regional fault systems. Hydrofracturing is the main factor controlling emerald mineralization. It permitted to the hydrothermal solutions to permeate through fractures but also along stratification planes forming in this case stratabound mineralizations. Emerald occurs in calcite veins, veinlets, pockets and brecciated zones associated mainly with pyrite, quartz, parisite, codazzite and fluorite. Emerald mineralization belongs to an epigenetic hydrothermal process. The alternance of arenite-shale formations in the Cretaceous probably played an important role in the accumulation of solutions and in the propagation of the hydrothermal channels. The origin of emerald involves chemical elements mobilized by the fluids in the Cr-V-Fe-Al-Si-bearing black shales. The source of beryllium remains a problem and is discussed in the paper.

Notes: Abstract Source rock gold deposits in Colombia include Proterozoic unconformity-related paleoplacers, Palaeozoic stratabound Au/Ag-Cu-Pb-V-U red bed-type ores, and Mesozoic/Tertiary hydrothermal vein systems of Cordilleran magmatic arcs. The younger metallogenic episode occurred some 8 Ma ago in the Western Cordillera. Epithermal deposits are generally small (〉 10,000–1 Mt grading 5–10 g/t Au) and the precious-base metal (Cu, Zn, Fe) association was probably deposited within the temperature range 180–300 °C. Widespread palaeoplacers in Quaternary terraces with enrichment in old channels, as well as extensively dredged alluvial deposits in presently active sediments, are connected with ongoing Andean uplift and erosion. Palaeochannel and alluvial gold concentrations represent the most promising targets for future exploration. An additional output could also derive from the clastic-hosted, stratiform deposits of the shield and E Cordillera.

Notes: Abstract  Sixteen microsatellite markers, including two described here, were used to construct a high-resolution map of the 1q32 region encompassing the regulator of the complement activation (RCA) gene cluster. The RCA genes are a group of related genes coding for plasma and membrane associated proteins that collectively control activation of the complement component C3. We provide here the location of two new genes within the RCA gene cluster. These genes are PFKFB2 that maps 15 kilobases (kb) upstream of the C4BPB gene, and a gene located 4 kb downstream of C4BP A, which seems to code for the 72 000 M r component of the signal recognition particle (SRP72). Neither of these two genes is related structurally or functionally to the RCA genes. In addition, our map shows the centromere-telomere orientation of the C4BPB/MCP linkage group, which is: centromere-PFKFB2-C4BPB-C4BPA-SRP72-C4BPAL1-C4BPAL2-telomere, and outlines an interval with a significant female-male recombination difference which suggests the presence of a female-specific hotspot(s) of recombination.

Percentile in durchschnittlich 2–4 Jahren.
Notes: Abstract Height and bone maturity have been followed for 9 years or more in 11 boys and 17 girls with primary hypo- or athyroidism. A marked catch-up in height carried the average patient from below the 3rd centile to above the 50th in 2 to 4 years of treatment in children treated before aged 2 — independently of the diagnosis hypo- or athyroidism. The catch-up only stabilized when the 75th centile was reached, at which point bone age had ceased to be retarded. The greater the height deficit at beginning of treatment, the greater the initial catch-up velocity. Final adult height averaged the 70th centile in girls and probably a little less in boys; every sufficiently treated child ended, or would certainly end, within normal limits. That catch-up may not always be complete, however, was shown by a pair of identical twins; the control twin reached the 90th centile as adult, while the treated twin reached the 70th. In children whose treatment started before age 1 the bone age became advanced over chronological age at about 3 years of age and remained advanced throughout childhood. This occurrence need cause no alarm provided the height centile is well above average. The bone age did not become advanced in children whose treatment started after aged 2. Hypothyroid infants show a marked reduction in rate of length growth from birth onwards and the diagnosis would be facilitated were accurate routine length measurements taken at birth and on subsequent clinic attendances.

Notes: The performance of an in-house designed mechanofusion process and the preparation ofcomposite powders for plasma spraying are investigated in a variety of powdered mixturesincluding metal/oxide, carbide/oxide, carbide/metal and metal/oxide/carbide. Scanning electronmicroscopy shows that dry particle coating depends on the thermo-mechanical and chemicalproperties of the powdered system. In the metal/oxide, carbide/oxide and metal/oxide/carbidepowder mixtures, fine ceramic particles coat the surface of the metallic or ceramic coarser particleswith no need of binders or solvents. However with the carbide/metal powdered system, an intimatemixture of components is achieved with an incipient dry particle coating. A nearly rounded shape ofthe final composite particles is induced by the mechanical energy input with no formation of newphases as confirmed by XRD analysis. It is suggested that the coating mechanism is governed byagglomeration and rolling phenomena. Finally these types of powders feature characteristics to beplasma sprayed in air

Notes: Summary Photoconductivity spectra for a CdIn2S4 halogen transport-grown crystal were recorded at RT with different levels of sulphur annealing, in order to understand the remarkable differences obtained by previous workers. Comparing our results with recent theoretical calculations of band structure and recent absorption studies, we conclude that excess sulphur plays a prominent role on the photosensitivity of this material and that it probably was the main cause of the different reported values of band gap transition.

Notes: The nonrelativistic anharmonic–asymmetrical–oscillator (AAO) is studied in full. The classical equation of motion is solved using Jacobi elliptic functions which have both real and imaginary periods. The imaginary period is connected with the imaginary part of the energy in quantum mechanics. The resonances (Siegert states) are calculated in the JWKB approximation.

Notes: Field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry was used to study the slow molecular dynamics in the nematics and isotropic phases and polyphasic region of the phase diagram in the thernary mixture: potassium laurate/1-decanol/water. The experiment has been performed over a broad range of Larmor frequencies (2×103−6.6×106 Hz). The first experimental evidence of director fluctuations in a micellar lyotropic nematic liquid crystal, studied by 1H spin-lattice relaxation rate, is reported. The results evidence that in the nematic mesophases, director fluctuations are responsible for the spin-lattice relaxation dispersion in the low Larmor frequency range ((approximately-less-than)105 Hz). By increasing the intermicellar water content, a crossover was found between a quasi-isotropic three-dimensional (3D) director fluctuation behavior and a two-dimensional (2D) pseudo-lamellar undulation fluctuation. In spite of the fact that no menatic phases of this micellar complex fluid are isotropic with respect to light scattering, they present spin-lattice relaxation profiles as driven by local director fluctuations. The polyphasic region, at lower temperatures, shows a quasinematic 3D director fluctuation behavior; meanwhile, the isotropic phase, at higher temperatures, presents 2D pseudo-lamellar undulation fluctuation modes. We conclude that the micelles, in the isotropic phase, preserve the pseudo-lamellar structure, already found in the nematic phases but forming nematic domains with the directors randomly oriented. In order to explain the higher frequency range ((approximately-greater-than)105 Hz), two relaxation mechanisms are assigned: (i) molecular reorientation by translational diffusion on the micellar surface and (ii) molecular exchange between the micelle and the bulk. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electronic books offer a number of possibilities for innovation over paper books in certain fields. It is the case of programming exercises, which have a complex but well-established structure. We describe a system for the development of electronic books on programming exercises. A mark-up language, called eXercita, was designed to represent and manage programming exercises in a comprehensive manner. Several tools allow customizing exercises to the user's purposes, as well as selecting parts of individual exercises and subsets of the repository. As a consequence, the user can generate a custom electronic book, presented as a hierarchical Web site and implemented structured according to a given specified criterion. Based on the eXercita language, we have developed a large repository of exercises, as well as two books: an electronic book on the Web and a paper book containing a set of selected exercises.
