    Notes: Abstract.  A nanosecond-time-resolution pyrometer has been developed for measuring the transient surface temperature of a solid material heated by pulsed excimer-laser irradiation. Fast germanium diodes are employed to capture the transient thermal emission signals in the wavelength range between 1.2 and 1.6 μm. The surface temperature is derived from the measured spectral thermal emission. The directional spectral emissivity is determined in situ by measuring the transient directional spectral reflectivity and applying Kirchhoff’s law. The experimental results are in good agreement with numerical thermal modeling predictions. The pyrometric thermal emission measurement also yields the solid/liquid interface temperature during the pulsed excimer-laser-induced melting. The relation between the measured interface superheating temperature and the interface velocity reveals the melting kinetic relation during the high-power, short-pulse laser-induced phase-change processes.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports the occurrence of monosynaptic connections between dorsal root afferents and a distinct cell type — the giant neuron — deep in the dorsal horn of the turtle spinal cord. Light microscope studies combining Nissl stain and transganglionic HRP-labeling of the primary afferents have revealed the occurrence of axosomatic and axodendritic contacts between labeled boutons and giant neurons. The synaptic nature of these contacts has been confirmed by use of electron microscope procedures involving the partial three-dimensional reconstruction of identified giant neurons. Intracellular recording in spinal cord slices provided functional evidence indicating the monosynaptic connections between dorsal root afferents and giant neurons. The recorded neurons were morphologically identified by means of biocytin injection and with avidin conjugates. Electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral dorsal roots evoked synaptic responses with short, fixed latencies (1.6–5.6 ms), which remained unchanged at high frequencies (10 Hz). Excitatory polysynaptic potentials were also observed. By means of pharmacological procedures the short-latency response was dissected in two components: one insensitive to tetrodotoxin, the other abolished by the drug. The toxin-resistant component was presumed to be sustained by small-diameter C fibers. The synaptic response was mainly mediated by the glutamate-AMPA receptor subtype; however, a small component mediated by NMDA receptor was also present.

    Notes: Deposition of superconducting thin films from YBa2Cu3O7 targets using a long-pulse (ms) Nd-glass laser with 50 J/pulse energy has been demonstrated. The deposition rate was approximately 100 nm/pulse and the film stoichiometry was close to that of the target. Scanning electron microscopy revealed spherical inclusions in the film. Scanning tunneling microscopy in air showed a terrace-ledge structure on the uniform portion of the film. A film produced by four pulses on a SrTiO3 substrate, held at 540 °C, and post-annealed in O2 at 850 °C for about 2h exhibited an onset transition at 78 K and zero resistance at 61 K. This new approach can provide fast deposition rates and broad-area film coverage per laser shot.

    Notes: The influence of plasma shielding on the coupling of laser energy to a target surface during picosecond pulsed laser–material interactions is demonstrated using a He and Ar gas atmosphere. An inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) is used to monitor the quantity of copper material removed during picosecond and nanosecond pulsed-laser sampling. The intensity of Cu i emission from the ICP-AES was found to be 16.4 times larger with He as the gas medium compared to Ar during picosecond laser sampling. It was also observed that depth of craters in the copper targets decreased as the gas pressure was increased beyond 10 Torr in Ar and 100 Torr in He. Possible mechanisms of shock waves, multiphoton ionization, and plasma shielding to explain these observations are discussed. For plasma shielding to occur in the picosecond time regime, the existence of high-energy photoelectrons emitted from a Cu sample during the leading edge of laser pulse is postulated. These electrons form a plasma in the gas above the target via an inverse bremsstrahlung process and the plasma absorbs part of laser energy. The electron density versus pressure was calculated from a simple model and found to have similar behavior as the crater-depth data.

    Notes: A versatile pulsed laser deposition chamber was employed for fabricating metal buffer layers and superconducting YBaCuO thin films on metallic substrates. Ag buffer layers were found to improve the resistive transition behavior for superconducting films on Pt and stainless steel. As-deposited YBaCuO films with Tc (R=0) at 84 K were produced on stainless steel using in situ laser-deposited Ag buffer layers. The critical current density was measured to be approximately 103 A/cm2 at 67 K.

    Notes: A photoacoustic spectrometer was developed for remote optical absorption measurements in aqueous solutions using an 85-m optical fiber to deliver pulsed tunable dye laser radiation to a sample cuvette located in a glove box. The spectrometer was tested using aqueous solutions of praseodymium ions. Beer's law was verified down to a concentration of 8×10−6M for an equivalent absorptance of 3.2×10−5 cm−1.

    Notes: Ion bombardment on the surface of a substrate during deposition of a thin film [ion-assisted (IA) deposition] is used to control thin-film crystalline orientation and phase. Ion-assisted deposition is demonstrated with the relatively new pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) technique, a method of thin-film growth that has shown promise for the synthesis of high-temperature superconductor and other complex oxide films. A versatile vacuum chamber with independent control of ion-gun parameters was developed for ion-assisted pulsed-laser deposition (IAPLD). Control of crystalline orientation and alignment of yttria-stabilized zirconia and CeO2 layers for use in YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconductor devices is demonstrated using this IAPLD technology. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A finite difference model was constructed to describe the origin of the complex transients in pulsed photoacoustic spectroscopy signals. With inclusion of boundary conditions and material interfaces, the model is shown to give qualitative agreement with experimental transients. The model provides insight into the results of varying the photoacoustic-cell materials and/or geometric configuration for cell optimization. The transients are found to contain significant information regarding resonant modes in the photoacoustic cell assembly. The transient signal behavior is explained in terms of these resonant cavity modes, and it is determined which cell cavities are relevant to a given time segment of the signal. Analytical detection limits are correlated with each point on the transient signal.

    Notes: A method of producing biaxially textured template layers for near-single-crystal-quality film growth on substrates that do not provide a template for oriented crystalline growth is described and compared to existing methods. This technique, ion-beam nanotexturing (ITEX), produces a biaxially textured layer by oblique ion irradiation of an amorphous film surface. Using in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction and ex situ x-ray diffraction, an yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) template layer fabricated by ITEX is shown to have the appropriate surface texture for YBa2Cu3O7-δ coated conductor fabrication. A YBa2Cu3O7-δ thin film deposited on an ITEX YSZ layer has a critical current of 2.5×105 A/cm2 (77 K, 1 μV/cm). ITEX produces texture rapidly and should be ideally suited for future low-cost manufacturing. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
