    Notes: Abstract  Every analytical result should be expressed with some indication of its quality. The uncertainty as defined by Eurachem ("parameter associated with the result of a measurement that characterises the dispersion of the values that could reasonably be attributed to the, . . ., quantity subjected to measurement") is a good tool to accomplish this goal in quantitative analysis. Eurachem has produced a guide to the estimation of the uncertainty attached to an analytical result. Indeed, the estimation of the total uncertainty by using uncertainty propagation laws is components-dependent. The estimation of some of those components is based on subjective criteria. The identification of the uncertainty sources and of their importance, for the same method, can vary from analyst to analyst. It is important to develop tools which will support each choice and approximation. In this work, the comparison of an estimated uncertainty with an experimentally assessed one, through a variance test, is performed. This approach is applied to the determination by atomic absorption of manganese in digested samples of lettuce leaves. The total uncertainty estimation is calculated assuming 100% digestion efficiency with negligible uncertainty. This assumption was tested.

    Notes: A photoacoustic spectrometer was developed for remote optical absorption measurements in aqueous solutions using an 85-m optical fiber to deliver pulsed tunable dye laser radiation to a sample cuvette located in a glove box. The spectrometer was tested using aqueous solutions of praseodymium ions. Beer's law was verified down to a concentration of 8×10−6M for an equivalent absorptance of 3.2×10−5 cm−1.

    Notes: A finite difference model was constructed to describe the origin of the complex transients in pulsed photoacoustic spectroscopy signals. With inclusion of boundary conditions and material interfaces, the model is shown to give qualitative agreement with experimental transients. The model provides insight into the results of varying the photoacoustic-cell materials and/or geometric configuration for cell optimization. The transients are found to contain significant information regarding resonant modes in the photoacoustic cell assembly. The transient signal behavior is explained in terms of these resonant cavity modes, and it is determined which cell cavities are relevant to a given time segment of the signal. Analytical detection limits are correlated with each point on the transient signal.

    Notes: High-dependency units are of benefit to patients and to the associated intensive care unit. However, the effectiveness of high-dependency care has not been quantified. We studied 100 consecutive patients whose high-dependency unit admission was longer than 48 h. The Logistic Organ Dysfunction System was used to assess organ dysfunction on a daily basis in these patients. The median Logistic Organ Dysfunction System score on admission was 3. The mean duration of stay was 4.3 days, and the median Logistic Organ Dysfunction System score on day 4 was 1. Sixty-six per cent of patients had a lower Logistic Organ Dysfunction System score at discharge. In the remaining patients, the commonest reason for no change or a higher Logistic Organ Dysfunction System score was renal dysfunction. High-dependency care is effective in the majority of patients in terms of improved physiological status and most patients were discharged with minor physiological dysfunction. This level of physiological dysfunction could be applied as a discharge threshold. Poorer patient outcome is associated with increased age and a longer stay on the unit. This poor outcome was commonly due to renal system dysfunction, and invariably followed surgery.

    Notes: Abstract The isotope260Lr, produced in reactions of18O with249Bk, was used to perform chemical experiments on lawrencium to learn more about its chemical properties. These experiments involved extractions with thenoyl trifluoroacetate, elutions from cation exchange resin columns with ammonium alpha-hydroxyisobutyrate, and reverse-phase chromatography using hydrogen di(2-ethylhexyl) orthophosphoric acid to investigate the chemical properties of Lr. The results from the elutions gave information about the ionic radius of Lr(III) which was found to elute very close to Er. An attempt to reduce Lr(III) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride was unsuccessful.

    Notes: Abstract Instrumentation has been developed to perform liquid-phase optical absorption spectroscopy at elevated temperature within the restricted enclosure of a high-level radioactivity glovebox. Absorbance measurements of the praseodymium-diglycolate complex allowed the determination of thermodynamic stability constants for two or three metal-ligand complexes at temperatures of 23, 50, 65, 80, and 95°C and an ionic strength of IM (NaClO4). Agreement of these results with prior literature values at 25 and 50°C is very good and demonstrates the validity of the present technique. Over the temperature range of 5 to 95°C, the variation of the free energy of complexation is adequately described by functions linear with temperature for all three complexes. Reaction enthalpies and entropies were calculated from the data via the van't Hoff equation.

    Notes: Abstract Nuclear Track Detectors (NTD's) are a useful option forin situ measurements of the distribution of alpha contamination as a function of soil depth. The contamination profile of alpha emitting elements, e.g. Pu, Am and U, can be determined by detecting their alpha emission at varying depths. This paper discusses a “stake” type device, containing strips of CR-39 (allyl diglycol carbonate) that can be inserted into the soil up to ten centimeters or more, depending on the firmness of the soil. The CR-39 is exposed directly to the contaminated soil for a few hours. The “stake” is then withdrawn from the soil, the plastic detectors recovered and the alpha tracks developed by chemical etching with KOH. The distribution of tracks can be used to determine the alpha contamination depth profile as well as for detecting hot spots. It has a sensitivity of less than a pCi/g of soil.

    Notes: Abstract Instrumentation has been developed to perform uv-vis-nir absorbance measurements remotely and at elevated temperatures and pressures. Fiber-optic spectroscopy permits the interrogation of radioactive species within a glovebox enclosure at temperatures ranging from ambient to 〉100 °C. Spectral shifts as a function of metal-ligand coordination are used to compute thermodynamic free energies of reaction by matrix regression analysis. Pr3+ serves as a convenient analog for trivalent actinides without attendant radioactivity hazards, and recent results obtained from 20–95 °C with the Pr-acetate complexation system are presented. Preliminary experimentation on Am(III) hydrolysis is also described.

    Notes: Abstract Samples of the long-lived fission product99Tc were isolated from liter quantities of selected groundwaters from the Cheshire, Bilby, Nash, Bourbon, Cambric and Faultless event sites and the99Tc concentrations determined by liquid scintillation counting. Although99Tc was detected in several of the samples, the concentrations did not exceed the MPCw of 3·10−4 μCi/ml and the results indicated that the Tc was present primarily in solution rather than sorbed on colloidal-size material.
