The thermal decomposition of the styrene/methylacrolein, styrene/ethylacrolein, and styrene/acrolein copolymers in the inlet systems of a mass spectrometer was investigated. Two stages of thermal decomposition were observed for the copolymers, namely, partial decomposition at lower temperatures and total decomposition above 200°C. The main components of partial decomposition were benzaldehyde, phenylacetaldehyde, acetophenone, formic acid and acetic acid. Their formation is discussed in connection with the unstable structures containing ether oxygen in the polymer chain.

Es wurde die thermische Zersetzung der Stryrol/Methylacrolein-, Styrol/Äthylacrolein und Styrol/Acrolein-Copolymeren in den Einlaß-Systemen eines Massenspektrometers untersucht. Bei den Copolymeren wurden 2 Phasen der thermischen Zersetzung beobachtet: Ein teilweiser Zerfall bei niedrigeren Temperaturen und ein vollständiger Zerfall bei Temperaturen oberhalb 200°C. Als Hauptprodukte des teilweisen Zerfalls konnten Benzaldehyd, Phenylacetaldehyd, Acetophenon, Ameisensäure und Essigsäure festgestellt werden. Ihr Entstehen wird im Zusammenhang mit den labilen Strukturen erörtert. die Äthersauerstoff in der Polymerkette enthalten.
