Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. The development of the pericentral cells, lateral wings, and primary cortex is briefly described in the rhodophyceanOsmundaria prolifera Lamouroux. 2. During subsequent development of the blades, a large part of the outer margins of the lateral wings is lost, presumably by sand abrasion. 3. The loss of the lateral wings appears to stimulate the primary cortex into meristematic activity, thereby producing a secondary cortex, attaining a thickness of up to 0.5 cm. 4. Secondary cortex formation in this species produces leathery, terete stipes which may be an adaptation towards perennation.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. The marine red algaLenormandia prolifera containsα-cryptoxanthin, a monohydroxy derivative ofα-carotene, as well asα- and β-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. 2. Chlorophylla and a trace of chlorophyllidea is present but no chlorophylld. 3. The chlorophyll/carotenoid ratio is 2.5 ± 0.7 (w/w), falling within the range reported for other species of the Rhodophyta. 4. α-Carotene is more abundant thanβ-carotene while lutein is the most abundant xanthophyll;α-cryptoxanthin accounts for only 2.4% of the total carotenoid content. 5. The possibility that theAmansia group is distinguished by containingα-cryptoxanthin and moreα- thanβ-carotene is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. A simple spectrophotometric method is described for the determination of bromine in organic material in the presence of other halogens. 2. The absorbance at 400 nm in chloroform is proportional to the bromine concentration between 0 and 0.6 g/l, although standards should be run with each set of determinations. 3. The results of a number of bromine determinations on seawater and the ash of several marine Rhodophyta are presented and discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary. Jaundice in critically ill patients may be difficult to explain. This study analyzes pathophysiologically relevant data, and discusses the prognostic value of hyperbilirubinemia. A total of 1275 patients were prospectively enrolled; 7.6 % developed hyperbilirubinemia of at least 2 mg/dl. Mortality in icteric patients was significantly higher (29 %) than in the non-icteric group. Sepsis, shock and the number of blood transfusions are very important in hyperbilirubinemia. Nevertheless, in critically ill patients, jaundice per se is not a sign of poor outcome; indeed it only reflects the underlying disease.

Notes: Abstract  An enriched microsatellite library of the mangrove species Avicennia marina was constructed, in which 85.8% of the clones contained microsatellite sequences. Of the microsatellite repeat sequences isolated, 55.0% were di-nucleotides, 34.2% were tri-nucleotides, 50.0% were perfect, 24.2% were imperfect, and 15.0% were compound. Four different di-nucleotide repeats were isolated with repeat lengths ranging from 5 to 33; ten different tri-nucleotide repeats were isolated with repeat lengths ranging from 3 to 25. The most common di-nucleotide was the AC/TG repeat; the most common tri-nucleotide was the CCG/GGC repeat. Sixteen microsatellite sequences were selected for primer design, and 6 primers were selected to investigate the polymorphism detected among 15 individuals of A. marina from three natural populations in Australia. A total of 40 alleles were detected at 6 microsatellite loci. The number of alleles per microsatellite locus ranged from 5 to 13. On average, 7 alleles were detected per locus. All microsatellite loci showed high levels of gene diversity (heterozygosity), with values ranging from 0.53 to 0.88; the mean value of gene diversity was 0.70. Microsatellite loci were also tested for conservation across Avicennia species. There was a decline in amplification success with increasing divergence between Avicennia species. The results indicate that microsatellites are abundant in the Avicennia genome and can be valuable genetic markers for assessing the effects of deforestation and forest fragmentation in mangrove communities, which is an important issue for mangrove conservation and afforestation schemes.
