Notes:
Summary The effect of pH on the fluorescence yield of hydrated T1+ and the variation of the fluorescence spectrum with [Cl−] have been investigated, i.e. an attempt has been made to complete the results already available in literature. The fluorescence spectrum of TIOH has been obtained and the absolute fluorescence yields have been determined. Further the quenching of the Tl+-fluorescence by Na2SO4, CdSO4, H2O2, fructose, methanol and iso-propanol has been measured. The dependence of the Tl+-fluorescence of [Cl−] leads to the conclusion, that C1− is bound more stable to T1+* (excited T1+) than to T1+ in its ground state and that — at least in rough approximation — thermodynamical equilibrium is reached for the reactions Tl+*+Cl−⇌Tl*Cl Tl*Cl−+Cl−⇌Tl*Cl2 − during the lifetime of T1+*. The difference between the free enthalpy for the reaction of T1+ in its ground state with Cl− and the free enthalpy for the reaction of excited T1+ with Cl− is about 0.15 eV. The quantum yield of the fluorescence of T1+ is ≈ 0.2 and decreases only slowly with increasing [Cl−]. The quantum yield of the fluorescence of TIOH is only ≈ 0.003. Corresponding to this quantum yield the fluorescence of T+ is quenched by OH− with a great probability (c1/2=3.10−4 M).
