    Notes: Abstract Genetic variation of 16 allozyme loci in 397 Halicryptus spinulosus (Priapulida) revealed overall polymorphism of P=0.438 and Hardy-Weinberg expectations for heterozygosity of H e=0.060 for Baltic Sea stocks, H e=0.143 for the White Sea and H e=0.121 for Iceland. Maximal unbiased standard distances of D=0.0693 separated Baltic and White Sea populations. Nordic and Baltic populations could be distinguished by allozymes, but Baltic subsamples proved cohesive. Gene flow amounted to effective exchange values per generation of N m=2.94 over 650 km of continuous habitat, N m=10.65 over 175 km, and N m=13.85 over 20 km. Gene flow started to decrease with geographic distance beyond a dispersal threshold of 20 km, but hierarchical G ST-statistics indicated light isolation by distance beyond a minimum of 8 km. Gene flow is high for a benthic worm assumed to lack dispersal by pelagic larva, a paradox which cannot be resolved now. Baltic populations are characterized by lower heterozygosity than Nordic stocks. In the Baltic Basin, temporally continuous brackish-water conditions have only existed for the past 7000 years. The two possible colonization routes of H. spinulosus to the geologically young Baltic Sea imply genetic drift, whether by founder effect (sweepstake colonization from Iceland) or by refugial bottlenecking during the Ancylus phase of the Baltic Basin after a direct connection to the White Sea had been sequestered. Continued genetic drift is emphasized by lower heterozygosity in the ecologically unstable Belt Sea compared to the central Baltic. Allozymes falsify the reduced-mutability hypothesis to explain bradytelic evolution of Priapulida. Regional genetic homogeneity, ample polymorphism, and preference for anoxic black mud qualify H. spinulosus populations as indicators of microevolutionary responses to water circulation regimes or pollution in the Baltic Sea.

    Notes: Abstract The use of Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) for the qualitative and quantitative determination of Linear Alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) in waste water samples was investigated. A Carbowax/Templated Resin (CW/¶TPR) coated fiber was directly immersed into influent and effluent samples of a sewage treatment plant (STP). Extraction conditions such as time, pH, ion strength were investigated. The extracted LAS were desorbed with a solvent in a specially designed SPME-LC interface for analysis with HPLC-FLD and Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS). The combination of SPME with ESI-MS proved to be an alternative technique for the LAS determination in waste water. Linear ranges of the external calibration were found from 0.5–100 ng/mL, with detection limits of 0.5 ng/mL for each individual LAS homologue. The reproducibility of the method is 15% (relative standard deviation).

    Notes: We report on a novel binary glass consisting of an electron donor and an electron acceptor molecule. It contains up to 25% of charge-transfer complexes and displays excellent hole as well as electron transport properties. Charge carrier mobilities have been measured by time-of-flight for various donor–acceptor ratios and are discussed within the framework of the disorder model of Bässler and co-workers. The results demonstrate that the presence of the donor molecules has no influence on the electron transport properties. In contrast to this, the hole transport is apparently affected by dipolar interactions between donor and acceptor molecules. Surprisingly the highest nondiagonal disorder for hole transport of about Σ=5 is found in samples with similar amounts of donor and acceptor indicating that the formation of charge-transfer complexes causes additional positional disorder. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract –  Allozyme genetics (34 loci) is studied in up to 1010 European trout (Salmo trutta) from the Rhine, Meuse, Weser, Elbe and Danube river systems in Central Europe. Population samples from single collection sites, chiefly small streams (GCG = 0.2126), rather than the divergence of the trout from Atlantic and Danubian drainages (GSG = 0.0711), contributed to the overall gene diversity of GST = 0.2824. Sea trout (n = 164) and brown trout (n = 767) in Atlantic rivers adhere to the same biogeographical stock, but anadromous trout from the Rhine and the Elbe display more genetic cohesion than resident brown trout from the Rhine system alone. Strayers from the Elbe could have founded the recently re-established sea trout population of the Rhine, after a few decades of absence or precarious rarity. Migrants may even connect the Rhine and Elbe stocks by ongoing gene flow. A release–recapture study confirms that all trout in the Rhine belong to one partly migratory population network: Six of 2400 juvenile sea trout released into a tributary of the Rhine were later recorded as emigrants to the Rhine delta, against three of 1600 released brown trout. One migrant had entered the open North Sea, but the other dispersers were recorded in fresh waters of the Rhine delta (Ijsselmeer, Amstelmeer). Stocking presumably elevated both heterozygosity and fixation indices of brown trout, but this effect is subtle within the range of the Atlantic population group. Improved sea trout management in the Rhine, and modifications to brown trout stocking in the upper Danubian area are recommended.

    Notes: The holographic properties of the photorefractive polymer composite PSX:DMNPAA:TNF are determined as a function of the grating spacing by use of two-beam coupling and degenerate four-wave mixing measurements. The phase shift was quantified with the grating translation technique. In particular, an almost constant mean drift length of the charge carriers of about 0.5 μm was obtained. The resulting discrepancies between the standard theory of crystals, which is generally used as an approximation for amorphous organic materials, and the experimental data are discussed and attributed to the different mechanisms of charge transport in amorphous organic materials. To verify our conclusions we performed time-of-flight and degenerate four-wave mixing measurements on the two photorefractive organic glasses DRDCTA:DOP:C60 and DRDCTA:EHMPA:C60, which differ in the degree of dispersivity of charge carrier transport and, hence, the involved trap energy distributions. Comparing the behavior of the two materials under investigation, we obtained a qualitative relationship between dispersivity and a theoretically unexpected drop in the diffraction efficiency: The larger the dispersivity the earlier the drop in the efficiency. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The photocarrier generation and recombination mechanism in double layer cells of dye sensitized liquid crystalline hexahexylthiotriphenylene (HHTT) have been studied by steady-state photoconduction measurements. From the dependence of the photocurrent on light intensity we could determine the charge carrier generation mechanism in an azo pigment 4,4'-[(2,5-diphenyl1,3,4-oxadiazol)-bis(azo)]-bis[3-hydroxy-(2H-benzimidazo[2,1-a]benz[d,e]isoquinolin-7-one)] as surface enhanced whereas in titanylphthalocyanine charge generation takes place in the bulk of the dye. We investigated the actionspectra of a single HHTT cell and an azo sensitized cell in the different phases of HHTT to show the influence of azo on the spectral response of the photocurrent. The quantum efficiency in a single HHTT cell as well as in a double layer cell with azo as charge generation layer was determined. By solving the diffusion equation for excitons we carried out an estimation of the exciton diffusion length in azo. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
