Notes: We report a study of preactivation in the heterogeneous nucleation of ice by Langmuir films adsorbed at the surface of water droplets. The Langmuir films consisted of aliphatic alcohols with 21, 23, or 25 carbon atoms per molecules. We find that the mean freezing temperature Tf* of the water droplets decreases abruptly as the preparation temperature Tprep is increased. Tprep is the highest temperature to which the droplets are heated since the immediately preceding freezing event. Analysis of the distributions of freezing temperatures yields the dependence of thermodynamic parameters on Tprep, allowing us to identify the role of thermal history separately in the energy barrier and the attempt frequency for nucleation. We find that the change in Tf* is exclusively due to a change in the energy barrier for nucleation and that all preactivation characteristics are a strong function of chain length. We find good agreement between our results and those expected from models for preactivation which rely on the expected properties of icelike ordered water near the nucleating agent. We also discuss the possibility that structural changes in the Langmuir film play a role in preactivation. We discuss future experimental directions for this system, now that preactivation behavior has been established. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report a new instrument for studies of heterogeneous nucleation rates for materials with nucleation temperatures in the range between −30 °C and room temperature. This device is particularly well suited for studies of heterogeneous nucleation of ice from liquid water for a diverse selection of nucleation agents. This instrument allows rapid, automated sampling of nucleation temperatures for a single sample following a specified temperature profile. A complete data set that characterizes the temperature dependence of heterogeneous nucleation rates by a specific substrate can be obtained in a few days. In this article we describe initial studies of ice nucleation on borosilicate glass with two different surface treatments. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: As part of a fiber optic, interferometric pressure sensing array system for hypersonic wind tunnel studies, a 64 channel spectrometer has been developed to separate the return signals by both position and wavelength. The spectrometer is designed to optically separate the quadrature signals from the interferometer. A ribbon of single-mode fibers carrying the dual wavelengths (811.7 and 813.3 nm) from the sensing surface array forms the entrance slit to the spectrometer. This spectrometer uses a unique optical layout consisting of a 32 element microlens array, narrow passband interference filter and concave mirror to separate and focus the optical signals onto the photosensitive surface of a 1×64 photodiode array. The microlens array collimates the emerging beams from the single-mode fibers to minimize cross talk between channels. The detector array and its control electronics are an integral part of the spectrometer and are mounted on the same baseplate as the other optical components. Fast scanning and digitizing electronics produce an effective data rate of 160 kHz for 64 channels. Details of the construction and results of the calibration are presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary On the basis of existing models for psychodynamic diagnostic evaluation and psychoanalytic interview technique and of the theoretical concepts of the 5 axes of the OPD diagnosis, a new type of the psychodynamic assessment interview is presented. The examination is structured in 5 phases: the opening scene, exploration of specific examples for relationships, exploration of experience of self and others, of therapy motivation, and finally clarifying the preconditions for treatment and the ability for insight. The syndrome diagnosis according to ICD 10 is completed in a final phase. This psychodynamic-diagnostic assessment interview is recommended, apart from the use for OPD diagnosis, for use a clinical instrument.
