Notes: As part of a fiber optic, interferometric pressure sensing array system for hypersonic wind tunnel studies, a 64 channel spectrometer has been developed to separate the return signals by both position and wavelength. The spectrometer is designed to optically separate the quadrature signals from the interferometer. A ribbon of single-mode fibers carrying the dual wavelengths (811.7 and 813.3 nm) from the sensing surface array forms the entrance slit to the spectrometer. This spectrometer uses a unique optical layout consisting of a 32 element microlens array, narrow passband interference filter and concave mirror to separate and focus the optical signals onto the photosensitive surface of a 1×64 photodiode array. The microlens array collimates the emerging beams from the single-mode fibers to minimize cross talk between channels. The detector array and its control electronics are an integral part of the spectrometer and are mounted on the same baseplate as the other optical components. Fast scanning and digitizing electronics produce an effective data rate of 160 kHz for 64 channels. Details of the construction and results of the calibration are presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Maternal pup searching behaviour of lactating house mice treated with apomorphine, haloperidol or saline was examined on a running board with a central depression as a nest. Pup searching was elicited by artificial ultrasonic stimuli: a female moved out from the nest either towards a 50 kHz tone (key stimulus) which is adequate to activate species specific pup searching behaviour or towards a 20 kHz tone (neutral stimulus), thus showing her preference for one of these stimuli. Under apomorphine (0.00625; 0.0125; 0.025 mg/kg) the females preferred the key stimulus. Nevertheless apomorphine (0.00625–0.025 mg/kg) prolonged response latencies and shortened the duration of pup searching. At the highest dose (0.05 mg/kg), apomorphine induced stereotyped sniffing. Haloperidol (0.025; 0.05; 0.1 mg/kg) had opposite effects to apomorphine: it lowered the threshold for elicitation, shortened response latencies and prolonged the duration of pup searching. Females treated with haloperidol (0.025–0.1 mg/kg) did not prefer the key stimulus. Changes in response elicitation and in the performance of pup searching induced by apomorphine and haloperidol, respectively, were assumed to be due to i) a reduced and an increased responsiveness to external stimuli respectively, ii) an enhanced and a reduced tendency for response switching respectively, and iii) a preference for spontaneous behaviour in apomorphine-treated females, with an increased dependence on exteroceptive stimuli following haloperidol.

Notes: Summary The occurrence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in several members of families has been observed in 4.8% of 105 MS patients from a limited epidemiological area of Rostock. Typing of the HLA antigens in 4 affected sib-pairs showed two identical HLA haplotypes in 3 of the pairs: 1 pair shared one haplotype. These findings point to a dominant mode of inheritance of the disease susceptibility gene together with the HLA haplotype. The assessment of family studies in MS is discussed.

Notes: Abstract  Introduction: As a result of the relatively high frequency of high-speed accidents, diaphragmatic rupture is a diagnosis that is increasingly being established. Not all of these, usually multi-traumatized, patients are diagnosed as having diaphragmatic rupture immediately following the traumatic event – rather, an appreciable number of these injuries are not detected until some time later – often after a considerable delay. Most of the cases involve rupture of the left diaphragm, with most defects occurring in the region of the central tendon. Methods: During the course of the second half of the year 1998, we operated on three patients with left diaphragmatic rupture. Two of these patients were treated immediately following traumatization, while the third case was a 10-year-old rupture originally misdiagnosed as a para-esophageal hernia. In all three cases, we were able to reduce the hernia and close the diaphragmatic defect laparoscopically. In the case of the two patients with a fresh rupture, the post-operative course was unremarkable, while in the patient with the missed rupture, a serous pleural effusion requiring drainage occurred on the left side. Conclusion: Overall, it would appear that in the case of an acute traumatic diaphragmatic rupture in particular, laparoscopic management, with its low level of traumatization and excellent access, offers a favorable alternative to conventional surgery. A point to be considered, however, is the fact that probably not every hospital will have the facilities for laparoscopic management available on a 24-h basis. In the case of long-standing ruptures, reduction of herniated bowel and treatment of the rupture will make considerable demands on the surgeon.
