Abstract Some questions of radiation safety associated with the c'orrosion and activation of construction materials are considered. It is shown that the effect of the surface material of the primary circuit on the formation of active surface deposits must be taken into account. The validity of the mathematical model used to describe the processes of washout, transfer, and deposition and that of some of the assumptions made are considered. On comparing the computed results with experimental data, reasonably good agreement is obtained. In order to improve the radiation situation when carrying out repair work, it is recommended that steels not containing elements giving longlived isotopes should be used. Such steels include, for example, the chromium-manganese type, the induced activity of which has a fairly short half life (manganese) and a low ψ-quantum yield per disintegration (chromium).
