    Notes: Abstract Regenerative potential of the calli of nineteen genotypes of Avena sativa, Avena nuda, Avena byzantina and one interspecific hybrid were compared over three successive cultures. Highly significant genotype and genotype × subculture interactions were observed. Among the highest plant regenerable genotypes were ‘Corbit’ (first subculture); ‘GAF/Park’ and ‘88Ab3073’ (second subculture); and ‘GAF/Park’ and ‘87Ab5932’ (third subculture). These genotypes regenerated on an average 10 to 17 plants each from a 200 mg callus mass after a 30 to 45 proliferation period. ‘GAF/Park’, a progeny of an interspecific cross, regenerated plants at a significantly higher level (11.85 plants/rep), followed by the similarly performing A. sativa (6.23 plants) and A. nuda (5.06 plants) genotypes, which were significantly higher than the A. byzantina genotypes (2.07 plants). Four genotypes were tested for their adaptability to suspension culture and plant regeneration potential by separating their cells and cell clusters into two sizes: larger and smaller than 3 mm. Larger clusters yielded plants for three genotypes ‘GAF/Park’, ‘88Ab3073’, and ‘Tibor’. The smaller clusters only regenerated plants for ‘GAF/Park’ and ‘88Ab3073’. From one gram of callus used to initiate suspensions of ‘GAF/Park’ and ‘88Ab3073’, 119.9 and 18.8 plants, respectively, were regenerated. The plants regenerated for various genotypes from agar-solidified or suspension culture experiments had normal growth and seed set. This study confirms high and sustained regenerative capabilities of ‘GAF/Park’, a restricted genotype due to the weedy Avena fatua genetic background and identifies alternative genotypes, especially 88Ab3073 for future tissue culture and transformation studies.

    Notes: Summary Chemical gametocides Ethrel, RH-531, and Uniroyal D513 were used in 1972–1973 field studies to induce male sterility in hexaploid triticale cultivars 6TA 131, 6TA 385, and 6TA 204. In cultivar 6TA 131, applications of RH-531 at 1500 ppm reduced seed set to 7.3, 2.8, and 14.1% at pre-, early and midboot growth stages, respectively. Ethrel at concentrations up to 10,000 ppm was less effective than RH-531. Little or no reduction in seed set was observed with Uniroyal D513. Applications of three chemical gametocides increased seed protein and decreased plant height and 1000-kernel weight in each cultivar.

    Notes: Summary Callus was obtained from immature excised embryos of triticale using MS medium supplemented with 3 mg/l 2,4-D and 1 mg/l kinetin. The presence of 2,4-D was essential for continued callus proliferation. Plantlets were induced from the calli by sub-culturing on medium either devoid of auxin or containing 0.1 mg/l 2,4-D. The capacity to produce callus and to form organs and plantlets differed markedly among the genotypes used. Lines also had distinct response to presence and absence of 2,4-D in the regeneration media. The callus of most triticale lines used differentiated into organs more readily on MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/l 2,4-D than on medium without growth regulators. Very high frequencies (up to 75%) of plantlet regeneration were observed in several of the triticale lines studied.

    Notes: A finite element solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for steady flow under the magnetic effect through a double-branched two-dimensional section of a three-dimensional model of the canine aorta is discussed. The numerical scheme involves transforming the physical co-ordinates to a curvilinear boundary-fitted co-ordinate system. The shear stress at the wall is calculated for a Reynolds number of 1000 with the branch-to-main aortic flow rate ratio as a parameter. The results are compared with earlier works involving experimental data and found to be in reasonable qualitative agreement. The steady flow, shear stress and branch flow under the effect of a magnetic field have been discussed in detail.
